Fourth Sunday of Advent
December 20, 2015
Once again, O Lord of hosts, look down from heaven, and see;
take care of this vine, and protect what your right has planted,
the son of man whom you yourself made strong.
-Psalm 80:15-16
A New Order
“O, Little Town of Bethlehem.” A Philadelphia clergyman named Phillips Brooks penned these popular words back in the mid1800s, but the prophet Micah could have used them first. Micah knew that from small packages great treasures come. In today’s
first reading, he knew that from tiny Bethlehem would come the Lord.
The writer in Hebrews explains that Christ came to us to do the will of God by establishing a new order and by becoming our
perfect sacrifice. And Luke tells us that Elizabeth and John, the infant in her womb, understand that great and wondrous things are
at hand with the coming of the Lord.
This is the Fourth Sunday of Advent. Soon we celebrate anew the fruit of Mary’s womb. As we are told in Hebrews, Jesus’
new order is being established even today. And as Micah proclaims, his greatness is reaching even now to the ends of the earth.

Celebrating the Mystery of Love. On December
8, 2015, Pope Francis opened the Holy Door at
St. Peter Basilica in Rome, marking the beginning of the Jubilee Year of Mercy. On that day,
the pontiff said in his homily, “We have to put mercy before
judgment, and in any event God’s judgment will always be in
the light of his mercy. In passing through the Holy Door, then,
may we feel that we ourselves are part of this mystery of
love.” Then on Sunday, December 13, 2015, our Bishop
Patrick J. McGrath opened the Holy Door at Saint Joseph
Cathedral in downtown San Jose. In the diocesan video invitation to the Jubilee Year of Mercy, the Bishop of San Jose
called all the faithful in the diocese, “So I invite you to walk
through the Holy Doors, walk through the doors of your own
heart, to experience the tender love of God, no matter your
weaknesses, no matter your sinfulness, no matter your limitations. God wants to share His mercy, and He wants to start
with you.” The Pope and our Bishop both invited us to take
part of the mystery of love during this Jubilee Year.

and live secure.
Find your delight
in the LORD
who will give you your heart’s desire.
(Luke 12:25-26)
Continue on this path with Me, enjoying My Presence even
in adversity. I am always before you, as well as alongside you.
See Me beckoning to you: “Come! Follow Me.” The One who
goes ahead of you, opening up the way, is the same One who
stays close and never lets go of your hand. I am not subject to
limitations of time or space. I am everywhere at every time,
ceaselessly working on your behalf. That is why your best
efforts are trusting Me and living close to Me.
Celebrating Christmas. As we are about celebrating Christmas, we take part of the mystery of love. We have good news
of great joy: “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling
among us” (Jn 1:14). We just need to come to a Nativity scene
and we will see. Then we will recall what is said in the Gospel
on Christmas night, that “this will be a sign for you: you will
find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a
manger.” (Lk 2:12) We have the light. “The light shines in the
darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (Jn 1:5) We
have peace: “on earth peace to those on whom his favor
rests.” (Lk 2:14) We have the Lord’s mercy. “When the kindness and generous love of God our savior appeared, not because of any righteous deeds we had done but because of his
mercy.” (Ti 3:4-5).

Celebrating God’s mercy. As we celebrate the Nativity of the
Lord, we celebrate God’s mercy. This Christmas, I invite you
to take part of this mystery of love and we begin it with prayers. We pray that we will have trust that the baby Jesus in the
manger is Immanuel: God with us. We pray that we will prudently follow the star of Bethlehem and be firm against the
sweet but false words of modern “Herod” that lead us to the
secular world. We pray that we will be peacemakers, who take
down divisive walls, indifference, and hatred. We pray that we
will be teller of a love story. Once we meet Jesus, who is the
light of the world and is the face of the Father’s mercy, then
we must tell the world about that good news. That is the good
“gossip” that we need to tell other people. Just as when the
shepherds saw the baby Jesus lying in the manger, “they made
known the message that had been told them about this
child.” (cf. Lk 2:17)

Kính thưa Quý Cụ, Quý Ông Bà và Anh Chị Em thân mến,
Mừng Mầu Nhiệm Tình Yêu. Hôm Lễ Đức Mẹ Vô Nhiễm 8 tháng 12, 2015, Đức Thánh Cha Phanxicô đã cử hành lễ mở
Cửa Thánh tại Đền Thờ Thánh Phêrô bên Rôma, đánh dấu ngày khai mạc Năm Thánh Lòng Thương Xót. Trong bài
giảng thánh lễ khai mạc, Đức Thánh Cha chia sẻ, “Chúng ta phải đặt lòng thương xót trước sự phán xét, và phán xét
nào của Chúa cũng luôn ở trong ánh sáng của lòng thương xót của Ngài. Vậy, khi bước qua Cửa Thánh, ước gì chúng
ta cũng cảm nhận được rằng chúng ta đang tham dự vào mầu nhiệm của tình yêu này.” Còn ở trong giáo phận thì vào
ngày 13 tháng 12, 2015, Đức Cha Patrick J. McGrath cũng đã mở Cửa Thánh tại nhà thờ chính toà Saint Joseph ở trung
tâm thành phố. Trong đoạn phim giới thiệu Năm Thánh Lòng Thương Xót của toà giám mục, Đức Giám mục San Jose
đã kêu gọi các tín hữu trong giáo phận, “Tôi mời gọi anh chị em hãy bước qua ngưỡng Cửa Thánh, hãy bước qua
ngưỡng cửa của tâm hồn mình, để trải nghiệm tình thương nhân từ của Thiên Chúa, cho dù anh chị em có những yếu
đuối, tội lỗi, hay những bất toàn thế nào, Thiên Chúa muốn chia sẻ lòng thương xót, và Người muốn bắt đầu với anh
chị em.” Cả Đức Thánh Cha và Đức Giám mục giáo phận đều mời gọi chúng ta tham dự vào mầu nhiệm của tình yêu
trong Năm Thánh này.
Mừng Lễ Giáng Sinh. Khi chúng ta mừng Lễ Giáng Sinh là chúng ta tham dự vào mầu nhiệm của tình yêu. Chúng ta có
một tin mừng trọng đại: “Ngôi Lời đã trở nên người phàm và cư ngụ giữa chúng ta.” (Jn 1:14) Chỉ cần đến nhìn Máng
Cỏ Giáng Sinh là chúng ta sẽ thấy. Nơi đó chúng ta sẽ nhớ lại lời trong Phúc Âm lễ đêm Giáng Sinh: “Anh em cứ dấu
này mà nhận ra Người: anh em sẽ gặp thấy một trẻ sơ sinh bọc tã, nằm trong máng cỏ.” (Lk 2:12) Chúng ta có ánh

Đấng cứu độ chúng ta, đã biểu lộ lòng nhân hậu và lòng yêu thương của Người đối với nhân loại. Không phải vì tự sức
mình chúng ta đã làm nên những việc công chính, nhưng vì Người thương xót.” (Ti 3:4-5)
Mừng lòng thương xót Chúa. Khi chúng ta mừng Lễ Chúa Giáng Sinh là chúng ta mừng lòng thương xót Chúa. Trong
Lễ Giáng Sinh năm nay, tôi mời anh chị em cùng tham dự vào mầu nhiệm tình yêu và bắt đầu việc tham dự bằng lời
cầu nguyện. Hãy nguyện rằng chúng ta sẽ có lòng tin tưởng là Chúa Hài Đồng Giêsu trong máng cỏ chính là Emmanuel: Thiên Chúa ở cùng chúng ta. Hãy nguyện rằng chúng ta sẽ luôn sáng suốt đi theo ngôi sao Bê Lem và cương quyết
chống lại những lời nói dối gian của những Hêrôđê thời đại, xúi dục chúng ta nghiêng về thế giới tục hoá. Hãy nguyện
rằng chúng ta luôn là những nhà kiến tạo hòa bình, là những người hạ xuống những bức tường chia rẻ, vô cảm và oán
ghét. Hãy nguyện rằng chúng ta sẽ là những người đi kể một câu chuyện tình. Một khi đã gặp được Chúa Giêsu, Đấng
chính là ánh sáng của thế gian và là khuôn mặt của lòng thương xót của Chúa Cha, thì chúng ta phải đi kể cho thế giới
biết về tin mừng này. Đó là những mẫu chuyện đáng nghe mà chúng ta kể cho người khác. Cũng như khi xưa, khi các
mục đồng nhìn thấy Hài Nhi Giêsu nằm trong máng cỏ thì “họ liền kể lại điều đã được nói với họ về Hài Nhi này.”

Queridos feligreses y amigos:
Dios de los ejércitos, vuélvete, mira desde el cielo, fíjate ven
a visitar tu viña, la cepa que tu diestra plantó y que tú hiciste
vigorosa.
Celebrando el Misterio del Amor. El 8 de diciembre,
2015 el Papa Francisco abrió la Puerta Santa en la Basílica de San Pedro
en Roma, empezando así el Año Jubilar de la Misericordia. Este día
el pontífice dijo en su homilía, “Tenemos que poner misericordia
antes del juicio, y en cualquier evento el juicio de Dios siempre
tiene la luz de la misericordia. Al pasar por la Puerta Santa, entonces, nos sentimos nosotros parte de este misterio de amor”.
El domingo 13 de diciembre, 2015, nuestro Obispo Patricio J.
McGrath abrió la Puerta Santa en la Basílica de la Catedral de San José
en el centro de la ciudad. En la invitación del video diocesano
del Año Jubilar de la Misericordia, el Obispo de San José llamó a los
creyentes de la diócesis diciendo: “Los invité a pasar por la Puerta Santa, caminen por la puerta de su propio corazón, y experimenten el cariñoso amor de Dios, sin importar sus debilidades,
sin importar su pecaminosidad, o sus limitaciones. Dios deséa
compartir su misericordia, y deséa empezar contigo”. El Papa y
nuestro Obispo nos invitan a participar en el misterio del amor
durante este Año Jubilar.

Un Orden Nuevo
“Oh, pequeña aldea de Belén”; un clérigo de Filadelfia
llamado Phillips Brooks escribió este popular villancico a mediados de los 1800, pero el profeta Miqueas hubiera podido
hacerlo primero. Miqueas sabía que el tesoro grande viene en
estuche pequeño. En la primera lectura de hoy, él sabía que del
pueblito de Belén vendría el Señor.
El escritor de la carta a los hebreos explica que Cristo vino
a nosotros para hacer la voluntad de Dios de establecer un nuevo orden y ser un sacrificio perfecto. Y Lucas nos dice que
Isabel y Juan, el pequeño en sus entrañas, comprenden que
grandes maravillas han llegado con la venida del Señor.
Este es el Cuarto Domingo de Adviento. Mañana celebramos de nuevo el fruto de tu vientre, María. Como se nos dice

mo hasta los confines de la tierra.
Celebrando la Navidad. Casi estamos a punto de celebrar la Navidad, tomamos parte en el misterio del amor. Tenemos buenas nuevas de gran alegría: “El mundo se hizo carne y habitó entre nosotros” (Juan 1:14). Sólo debemos acercarnos a un pesebre y
podremos ver. De esta manera nos recordaremos lo que nos dice
el Evangelio en la Noche Buena, que “este será el signo para tí:
hallarán a un niño recién nacido, envuelto en pañales y acostado
en un pesebre”. (Lucas 2:12) Tenemos la luz. La luz brilla en las
tinieblas, y las tinieblas no pudieron vencer la luz”. (Juan 1:5)
Tenemos paz: “Gloria a Dios en lo más alto del cielo, y en la
tierra, gracia y paz a los hombres”. (Lucas 2:14) Tenemos la misericordia de Dios: Pero se manifestó la bondad de Dios, Salvador
nuestro, y su amor por los hombres. No se fijó en lo bueno que
hubiéramos hecho, sinó que nos tuvo misericordia y nos salvó.
(Timoteo 3:4-5).
Tradiciones de Nuestra Fe
Esta semana recordamos a los niños judíos que fueron
asesinados por orden del Rey Herodes en Belén. Esa tragedia
que ocurrió cuando el viejo y celoso rey se enteró del nacimiento de un nuevo rey de los judíos. Él mandó a matar a todo
niño que tuviera menos de dos años. El llanto de las familias
que perdieron sus pobres inocentes se ha convertido en risas en
varios países latinoamericanos. El 28 de diciembre en muchas
partes es conmemorado como el día de los inocentes que viene
siendo el April Fools Day de Latinoamérica. En ese día se hacen bromas para burlarse de los amigos. Si la broma funciona
al pobre que fue engañado se le llama “inocente”.
La inocencia normalmente se atribuye a los niños o a los
ingenuos, pero en si la inocencia es una virtud cristiana, de los
que hemos sido perdonados por Cristo. Esta inocencia no es
ingenuidad mas bien es la candidez, simplicidad y generosidad
de una persona que conoce bien lo duro que es la vida y aún
así mantiene la esperanza.

Celebrando la misericordia de Dios. Al celebrar el nacimiento de
Dios, celebramos la misericordia de Dios. Esta Navidad los
invito a participar en el misterio del amor y empezar con oraciones. Oramos para tener confianza en el Niño Jesús en el pesebre que es el Emmanuel: Dios está con nosotros. Oramos para
que sigamos prudentemente la Estrella de Belén y estemos
firmes en contra de las palabras dulces pero falsas del “Herodes”
moderno que nos guía a un mundo secular. Oramos para que
seamos mediadores, para que quitemos las pareredes de divisiones, de la indiferencia, y del odio. Oramos para que seamos
los narradores de la historia de amor. Una vez que encontremos
a Jesús, quién es la luz del mundo y es la cara de la misericordia
de su Padre, entonces podremos decir al mundo de la buena nueva. Este es el buen “chismoteo” que necesitamos decir a las personas. Así como cuando los pastores vieron al recien nacido
acostado en el pesebre, “entonces contaron lo que los ángeles les
habían dicho de este niño”. (cf. Lucas 2:17)
Vivamos la Palabra de Dios
En este último domingo de Adviento, la historia de María e
Isabel nos recuerda que la Navidad no se trata simplemente
del nacimiento de un niño en un rincón oscuro del mundo.
Se trata más bien de reconocer la luz—la luz de Cristo, el
Ungido, que irrumpe en la oscuridad del mundo y viene a
nuestro corazón. Ora con gratitud por el don más grande la Navidad—Jesús, el Salvador del mundo.
