The Bosch Group operates on all three levels of connectivity – intelligent and connected devices, software platforms, and applications and services – in order to provide additional benefits to customers. More than 40 percent of Bosch product categories are already webenabled, and this number is rising rapidly. MEMS sensors are a key technology for connectivity, and Bosch has extensive expertise in this area. The company also has its own cloud for web-based services, as well as a compatible software core, the Bosch IoT Suite, that can be used to develop, provide, and operate applications on the internet of things. Bosch is also developing its expertise in data mining, the systematic application of statistical methods to the processing of huge amounts of complex, rapidly changing data. A team of experts in Palo Alto, California (USA), and Bengaluru, India, is working on such tasks, supporting associates from the divisions. To improve their competitiveness, large companies have to create space for more entrepreneurship. This is why Bosch has its own platform. Robert Bosch Start-up GmbH helps Bosch development teams become successful entrepreneurs. It takes care of things such as premises, financing, and other administrative tasks. One example is the start-up that created the Bonirob agricultural robot. The team from Deepfield Robotics is developing this robot, which is the size of a compact car, as an aid for plant breeding and crop farming. 8 9 Bosch today 2016 To remain an innovation leader, Bosch places great importance on research and development. In the fall of 2015, it opened a new research campus in Renningen near Stuttgart, Germany. This is a flagship project for Bosch, in which the company has invested around 310 million euros. It wants Renningen to become a hub of its global research and development network, which employs around 55,800 associates. Their research is focused on areas such as sensor technology, automation, driver assistance systems, battery technology, and improved automotive powertrain systems. Bosch is also working to expand its basic software expertise – particularly for IoT connectivity. Three out of four smartphones worldwide contain Bosch sensors Even today, more than 40% of Bosch product classes are web-enabled 55,800 associates work in research and development at Bosch 10 11 Bosch today 2016 Mobility Solutions Bosch Group sales revenue Sectoral comparison Structure of sales revenue, 2014–2015 Percentage figures 68 59 14 9 9 25 9 7 14 15 14 15 14 15 14 15 Mobility Solutions The Mobility Solutions business sector, one of the world’s largest automotive suppliers, accounts for 59 percent of total sales. Earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) rose to 4.6 billion euros, compared with 3.0 billion euros in the previous year. One major strategic decision was the acquisition of all shares in former joint ventures concerned with household appliances and automotive steering systems. In its operations as well, Bosch made further progress, despite a weak economic environment. Innovative and energy-efficient products were an important source of growth. Performance varied considerably by business sector and region. The Mobility Solutions and Consumer Goods business sectors were particularly successful. The Energy and Building Technology business sector was also able to significantly improve its figures year on year. On the other hand, parts of the Industrial Technology business sector are suffering from a very weak market environment. From a regional perspective, sales in North America recorded particularly strong growth; sales also grew positively in Europe. By contrast, sales growth in Asia Pacific did not match that of previous years. The situation was once again very difficult in South America. 20 21 Bosch today 2016 The total number of Bosch Group associates rose to some 374,800 at the end of 2015, compared with 290,200 at the end of 2014. Most of the increase was due to the acquisitions of Automotive Steering and BSH Hausgeräte. Furthermore, additional recruitments increased the number of associates by some 12,700 after allowing for personnel turnover; including associates recruited by Automotive Steering and BSH Hausgeräte in 2015, the figure was 16,400. Occupational training and continuing professional development have traditionally been regarded as very important at Bosch. Worldwide, over 7,300 young people completed apprenticeship schemes at Bosch in 2015. Due to the strong tradition of dual education in companies and schools, many of these young people – around 4,900 apprentices – are in Germany. At its locations worldwide, moreover, Bosch has many training centers of its own that provide training specifically for technical trades. These include centers in France, Turkey, India, China, and Vietnam, but also in Brazil and North America. Topics such as software, IT, and Industry 4.0 also play an increasingly important role in occupational training and continuing professional development. It came to approximately 6.4 billion euros in 2015, compared with 5 billion euros in the previous year. Due to the first-time consolidation of Automotive Steering and BSH Hausgeräte, the R&D cost ratio fell from 10.1 percent to 9 percent, despite an absolute increase in research and development cost. If Automotive Steering and BSH Hausgeräte had been included in the research and development cost for 2014, it would have come to around 5.6 billion euros, and the R&D cost ratio would also have been roughly 9 percent. Business targets The Bosch Group’s business targets are derived from the “We are Bosch” mission statement, the strategic focal points, and the competitive environment. Over the longer term, the company continues to aim for average annual sales growth of 8 percent, with up to 3 percentage points of this coming from acquisitions. By 2020, Bosch wants to double its sales in Asia Pacific and the Americas compared with 2013, to grow faster than the market in Europe, and to increase its sales in Africa from their present level of some 500 million euros to 2 billion euros. In terms of business sectors, Bosch continues to aim for a better balance between Mobility Solutions and the other business sectors. This balance has improved thanks to the acquisition of BSH Hausgeräte. Bosch has also set itself the goal of an EBIT margin from operations of around 7 percent of sales, derived from benchmark comparisons of operating units, taking into account the significant up-front investments needed for growth projects and for the change processes this will involve. Total research and development cost Bosch Group, 2011–2015 Figures in millions of euros 4,190 4,442 4,543 4,959 6,378 11 12 13 14 15 Total research and development cost Bosch Group, 2011–2015 As a percentage of sales revenue 8.1 9.9 9.9 10.1 9.0 11 12 13 14 15 24 25 Bosch today 2016 so far, Bosch is considering a significantly higher long-term target for 2020 including Automotive Steering and BSH Hausgeräte. If these two operating units are included, a roughly 30 percent reduction from the 2007 level had already been achieved by 2015. With more than 100 Industry 4.0 projects, Bosch is improving resource efficiency in its plants. Sustainability For the Bosch Group, sustainability means securing the company’s long-term success while at the same time protecting the natural resources on which present and future generations depend. The strategic imperative “Invented for life” thus expresses the aim to make mobility even safer, cleaner, and more economical, and to develop eco-friendly products in general. Ecology is thus a driver of innovation: in 2015, more than half of research and development expenditure at Bosch went into products that help improve energy efficiency, environmental protection, and resource conservation. This does not yet include Automotive Steering and BSH Hausgeräte. But business opportunities are not the only ones opened up by systematic sustainability management. It also helps the company counter environmental risks such as global warming and resource scarcity. By 2020, Bosch has pledged to reduce its relative (in terms of value added) CO2 emissions (not including Automotive Steering and BSH Hausgeräte) by 20 percent from their 2007 level. By 2015, the company had already significantly exceeded this target, having achieved a reduction of some 26 percent. As a positive “side effect,” the Bosch Group was able to save 530 million euros in energy costs between 2007 and 2014 alone. In view of the improvements achieved Supporting occupational training and professional development is a further focus of the company’s global efforts to promote sustainability. Bosch’s aim is to continue each associate’s professional development, regardless of age or experience. In 2015, therefore, some 247 million euros were spent on professional development. Statistically, each associate attended 1.4 classroom training courses. For the company founder Robert Bosch himself, education was the key to participation in society. The Bosch Group’s social commitment is part of this tradition, and is based on the continuing work of the company’s own foundations in Brazil, China, India, and the U.S., as well as on the voluntary work done by thousands of associates. Last year, donations by Bosch supported things such as educational projects for socially disadvantaged children and adolescents. The principal, teachers, and students came to Berlin to receive the award. In early 2015, the Stiftung set up the Deutsche Schulakademie (German school academy). Its job is to ensure that the good practice of all school award winners is made available to other schools in Germany. Robert Bosch Stiftung The Robert Bosch Stiftung promotes projects relating to healthcare, science, education, and international relations. Its aim is to find possible solutions for social issues, and to test them in the field as models. Insights from its projects are made available to decision-makers and the general public. The Stiftung finances itself from the dividend it receives as a shareholder in Robert Bosch GmbH. Some of the most effective tools of its work include international scholarship programs, exchange programs for young executives, and research grants for journalists. Since September 2015, for example, as part of the stART program, Greek university graduates have been able carry out youth culture projects in order to gain qualifications in international cultural management. Their innovative ideas give young people in Greece the chance to participate in culture and society, and thus reinforce cohesion in Europe. The issue of migration and participation has also been a focus of the Stiftung‘s work for more than ten years: at the start of 2015, for example, it convened an expert commission to look into the realignment of refugee policy. Since then, ten high-caliber representatives from politics, business, and civil society have been preparing concrete policy recommendations. The commission has systematically sifted expert contributions from as many involved parties as possible, on topics as diverse as language acquisition, living space, and the labor market. www.bosch-stiftung.de 28 29 Bosch today 2016 Bosch as an employer Are you looking for balance?
