On this Sunday we acknowledge Him to be truly our King and Our Lord. I hope that this day will be a day of great joy for each of you and for Our Lord Himself as we give Him our love and obedience. This week we celebrate Thanksgiving. I am thankful to Almighty God for each of you my dear people. On Thanksgiving Day, God willing, I will be in Ohio with my family but I will remember you in my prayers. I hope that your own Thanksgiving will be a day to remember the blessings you have received in life. Our Masses that day will be at 7:00 a.m. and at 8:30 a.m. as well as 7:00 p.m. Perhaps you will be able to assist at one of those Masses and render thanks to Almighty God for all that you have received in your life. We should also remember to bless the Lord for all that we have received as a country and for the opportunities that we have been given to live in a land where we have had sufficient food and other necessities. Let us not forget those who go hungry and homeless and who suffer the lack of even the basic necessities of life. Hopefully I will be back for the first Sunday of Advent which is next week!! Advent affords us the opportunity to prepare for the great Feast of Christmas through prayer and penance. It is a penitential season and the priest is dressed in purple to signify the nature of this important time. We have four weeks to reflect on our present way of living and to try to make amends for our sins and failures as well as seek to be renewed as we approach the Feast of the Birth of Christ. I will write more about this in next week’s bulletin. In the meantime, I hope you will each have a Happy Thanksgiving and enjoy some time to be with friends and family. November 22, 2015 Take care and God bless you. Sincerely yours, Father Timothy Davison Let us remember that, as much as has been given us, much will be expected from us, and that true homage comes from the heart as well as from the lips, and shows itself in deeds. Theodore Roosevelt Catholic Campaign for Human Development During his visit to Brazil, Pope Francis said, “The measure of greatness in a society is found in the way it treats those most in need” (World Youth Day Address, July 25, 2013). With these words, Pope Francis continues to bring us closer to Jesus present among the poor and to the call to stand with them. The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) effectively articulates the Evangelii Gaudium by addressing the root causes of poverty in the United States. 25% of the proceeds of the collection are retained to fight poverty in our own Diocese. The CCHD provides funding for groups that make lasting change and uplift the poor in the United States. CCHD’s grants improve education, support economic development, and create affordable housing in low-income neighborhoods. Please give to the CCHD collection. Wednesdays at the Cathedral Holy Family Cathedral unveils “Wednesdays at the Cathedral” faith formation night with Speaker Dr. Edward Siri. Popular Catholic speaker, writer and EWTN contributor, Dr. Edward Siri will open the new faith formation night on December 2nd at 6:00 PM at Holy Family Cathedral. Dr. Siri is the well-known author of A Biblical Walk through the Mass, a founding leader of FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Students) and the host of the Symbolon evangelization series. Dr. Siri, along with his wife and seven children, live in Denver, Colorado, where he is a professor at the Augustine Institute. With FOCUS missionaries at the University of Tulsa and Christ the King and many parishes using his various faith programs, Dr. Siri has certainly laid roots in our city. An engaging speaker, Dr. Siri will present a talk and entertain questions afterwards. All are welcome to attend and dinner will be provided beginning at 6:00 PM with Dr. Siri starting at 6:30 PM TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION For good reason, Americans have been ambivalent about “kings” for many years, even long before George III’s troops were sent packing in 1776. To say Christ is our King is to make a statement not about our politics, but about the dignity of our own identity. At our baptism, the crown of our head was once slathered (or at least dabbed) with oil while the church prayed “as Christ was anointed priest, prophet and king, so may you live always in his body.” To celebrate Christ’s kingship, then, is to claim our own identity. Your head was anointed just as Samuel poured oil over David’s head. David had his gifts, but he was no prize, and perhaps that might comfort you to think about your call, out of the messiness of your own life, to stretch into a lifestyle that is marked by worship, by prophetic speech and deeds and the kingly ability to fashion a world (or at least a patch of it) where relationships are marked by justice, mercy and the cultivation of good. Rev. James Field Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. From the Bishop Bishop Slattery wants to pray for your beloved deceased during the month of November, the month of the poor souls. If you send a list of your deceased relatives and friends, the Bishop will place that list on the altar of his private chapel during the month of November. Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, Copyright J. S.
