Adora on) 10:00 a.m. Mass English - Serra Center 12:00 noon Mass Spanish - Centro Serra The Jubilee Year of Mercy Dec. 8, 2015 through Nov. 20, 2016 Mo o: “Merciful like the Father” Mission San Luis Rey is one of seven Churches throughout the Diocese of San Diego designated as Door of Mercy for pilgrims to visit during the Jubilee. This Holy Door offers an opportunity for anyone to travel through the Holy Door, in case they cannot visit the one in Rome. The Holy Door represents Christ, who is the door through which we encounter God, the Father of Mercy. Jubilee Year of Mercy Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph Imagine: three New Year's celebra ons in li le over a month! In late November, Advent began the new liturgical year; December 8, the Jubilee Year of Mercy; this coming Friday, the New Year 2016. In today's Gospel, a er three days of anguish, Mary tells Jesus how desperately she and Joseph have been searching for him. Mary could be speaking for the whole human race. With religious persecu ons raging, interna onal and domes c conflicts seething, our family and friends suffering various difficul es, not to men on our own personal problems, how much our world needs Jesus as another New Year veiled in mystery begins! As we pray for God's mercy to enfold our world and embrace each of us in 2016, let our New Year's resolu on be to live the Jubilee Year of Mercy by being for others, as Mary was, a channel of God's mercy and an instrument of Christ's peace. --Peter Scagnelli, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. FAMILY LIFE Family life is sacred, but it is not without trial. Perhaps this is the most important message we can glean from today’s readings. If Jesus, Mary, and Joseph can trip up some mes—can disconnect—then we shouldn’t find it surprising when such things happen to us as well. And parents everywhere (children, too) can probably relate to—and take some solace in— the Gospel’s account of Mary and Joseph a er Jesus explained why he stayed behind in the temple. They heard his words, Luke tells us, “But they did not understand what he said to them” (Luke 2:50). Amen! Nevertheless, Jesus does go back home with them, and con nues to thrive under their care. December 27, 2015 - They Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph | 3 STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT The ul mate aim of Saint Paul’s Le er to the Colossians is to teach the community how to deepen its rela onship with Christ Jesus. His list of virtues summarizes the ideals of communal stewardship: compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and pa ence. For Paul, prac cing these virtues opens our hearts to Christ as individuals and as a worshipping community. This is how the Chris an community ought to live. This is how its members should behave in their dealings with others, par cularly with fellow believers. As we approach the New Year, how might we embrace one of these virtues more fully in order to deepen our rela onship with Jesus? CHILI COOK-OFF Join us at the Knight’s Chili Cook-off on Saturday, January 9, 2015 from 6:00-9:00 p.m. in the St. Francis Hall. A QUOTE FROM POPE FRANCIS We need saints without cassocks, without veils - we need saints with jeans and tennis shoes. We need saints that go to the movies that listen to music, that hang out with their friends (...) We need saints that drink Coca-Cola, that eat hot dogs, that surf the internet and that listen to their iPods. We need saints that love the Eucharist, that are not afraid or embarrassed to eat a pizza or drink a beer with their friends. We need saints who love the movies, dance, sports, theatre. We need saints that are open, sociable, normal, happy companions. We need saints who are in this world and who know how to enjoy the best in this world without being callous or mundane. We need saints. PARISH LIBRARY NOTES The library will be closed through January 2. Please take some me to check through your books and media to see if you have forgo en to return some of the library materials. Thanks to several generous dona ons over the past year we have increased our collec on of DVD’s, our Franciscan heritage materials, addi onal bible study items, Catholic authors, items on/about the new Pope as well as materials about other religious tradi ons. Come visit us on January 3rd to see your parish library. Have a blessed Christmas season and enjoy a Holy & Happy 2016. LITURGICAL COLORS Why do the Priests wear different colors at Mass throughout the year? The different colors signify what liturgical season the church is in. There are five main colors that are symbolic of the season. VIOLET/PURPLE symbolizes penance, prepara on and sacrifice. It is used during Advent and Lent. ROSE symbolizes an cipa on and joy. It is worn on the third Sunday of Advent (Gaudete Sunday) and fourth Sunday of Lent (Laetare Sunday) as we rejoice at the halfway point of the prepara on, and an cipate the coming joy, of Christmas or Easter. WHITE symbolizes purity, joy, light and glory. It is used during the seasons of Christmas and Easter as well as for feasts of our Lord (except those pertaining to His passion), the Blessed Mother, the angels, the saints who were not martyrs and a few other feasts and solemni es. White is also used for weddings and funerals and for days special to a given parish. GOLD OR SILVER may be used in place of white. GREEN symbolizes hope and life. It is used for Ordinary Time which is the liturgical season that focuses on the 3year period of our Lord’s public ministry, His teachings and miracles. It is a reminder that the mission of the church is to share the hope and life of Christ with the world. Green symbolizes this hope and life just as the hint of green on trees in early spring brings the hope of new life. RED is symbolic of blood, fire and passion. It is used on Palm Sunday, Good Friday and any other commemoraon of the Precious blood. It is also worn on the feasts of martyrs and apostles (except St. John), Pentecost, and Confirma on Masses. 4 | MISSION SAN LUIS REY PARISH, Oceanside, California — December 27, 2015 SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION The Sacrament of Reconcilia on which takes place on Saturdays from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. will RESUME on Saturday, January 9, 2016. 10:00 a.m. 8 2015 a nov.
