David`s Sign Language Book
David’s Sign Language Book Weekly Vocabulary Prepared by Mrs. Marcella Harper, Ed.S./CSC, Teacher for Deaf/HH students Foreword Thanks to David’s mom, Maria, who gave me permission to share this information. David is an Hispanic student with Downs Syndrome; he wears glasses and hearing aids. I first met him when he was a four year old preschool student served three days a week at Head Start. He also had some problems with ambulation and fine motor skills. Although he had sufficient hearing to respond to verbal commands, his Individual Education Program (IEP) Committee decided to begin introducing sign language vocabulary along with speech to give him some means of expressing himself until he could master spoken words. Initially, we taught him only 4-5 signs per month. Once he began kindergarten, in a self-contained classroom, we began introducing 5 signs a week. The decision about what signs to introduce each week were driven largely by school routines and basic curriculum. In October, he began transitioning into the regular kindergarten classroom for gradually increasing periods of time. His Weekly Sign Language lessons became a resource for all of the teachers working with him; these signs were used consistently by his speech language pathologist, his vision impaired teacher, his special education teacher, and the paraprofessionals working with him. After one year of instruction, David has an expressive vocabulary of over 100 signs. He consistently identifies himself and classmates by their name signs; he identifies 24/26 upper and lower case letters of the alphabet; he identifies 11/11 colors; and he consistently names numbers 0-10. He also expresses many other words in sign language. He is beginning to vocalize two words at a time. So, now we are ready to help him transition to spoken language, but at least he has some way to communicate while he is learning. This document represents a highly individualized booklet, designed just for David. My hope is that you can take the ideas represented here and adapt them or create your own for student/s who might need a jump start with tactile communication. “Sign” – cerely, Marcella Masters Harper, Ed.S./CSC Teacher for the Deaf & Hard-of-Hearing Sign Language Lesson – Month 1 EAT or FOOD (Comer o Comida) DRINK (Beber) MORE (Mas) TOILET (Bano) [Images from http://lifeprint.com/dictionary.htm] Sign Language – Month 2 HOUSE MAMA SCHOOL DADDY [Images from http://lifeprint.com/dictionary.htm] CAR Sign Language – Month 3 Apple (Manzana)* House (Casa)* Umbrella (Paraguas)* Bed (Cama) [Images from http://lifeprint.com/dictionary.htm] * These three pic symbols are used for the vision screening test. * Estas tres imágenes se utilizan para el examen de la vista.
