Crocodile Planet
This vast zoological and botanic park
is home to more than 200 crocodilians
in carefully recreated habitats. Travel
from China to Louisiana via Africa
and Australia to see spectacled cayman
basking by the avocado trees and the
1-tonne saltwater crocodile. Plus the
albino alligator, one of the world's
rarest animals!
Monkey Valley
No cages or fences here: the primates
interact freely with visitors. From
March-November, the 40 daily
feeding times are a fascinating
opportunity to get close to the 400
residents, including the male gorilla
and chimpanzees. It's also home to
France's only bonobos! New: the
howler monkeys, audible from 3 km
away.

Un parque botánico de 5000m2 con 200
saurios viviendo en una reproducción de
su hábitat natural. El nuevo sentido de la
visita desde la nursery, les lleva de China
a Louisiana, atravesando continentes.
No se pierdan el aligátor albino, uno de
los animales más raros del mundo, aquí
mimado en un entorno especialmente
diseñado para él.
La Vallée des Singes
Ni jaulas ni barreras. Los primates viven
en libertad. De marzo a noviembre
aprovechen de los momentos de alimentación
para verlos de cerca. De los 400 habitantes,
los preferidos del público son el gorila,
los chimpancés y los 19 bonobos, únicos
ejemplares de toda Francia. Novedad: el
canto de los monos aulladores, audible a
3km a la redonda.

Les Géants du Ciel, espectáculo de rapaces
Seguro que han visto alguna vez en el cine
a Doudou el Gran Duque, Dolly la lechuza
y a Djalo y Toumaco los loros… No se los
pierdan en su hogar, el castillo de los Obispos
de Chauvigny. Entre Pascua y septiembre
estas aves ofrecen un magnífico espectáculo
de altos vuelos entre las torres del castillo y
el panorama de la ciudad.

Haut-Poitou Golf Club is one of the
best in France!
Le Connétable Golf Course at La
Roche-Posay spa is for players of all
levels. The narrow, gently undulating
fairways surround a 3ha lake.
And just outside Poitiers, the wooded
Mignaloux-Beauvoir Blue Green course
has some challenging water hazards!
Snake Island
After a full refurbishment last year, 2015
sees the addition of new species, a kids'
play area and a mini-farm with pygmy
goats and the diminutive Bennett's
wallaby.
In recreated environments, see the
Mexican green iguana and rainbow
boa in a festival of colour! You can
even handle some of the residents! Plus
Europe's largest collection of green
anacondas and scaleless snakes, a
vulnerable, smooth-skinned species
that cannot live in the wild – a first in
Europe!
And did you know that the Aldabra
giant tortoise from the Seychelles,
weighing up to 350 kilos, drinks through
its nostrils?

Descubierta en 1914 es una obra excepcional de la época magdaleniense, conservando
tallas de temas diversos (mujeres, osos, rostros…) en placas móviles conservadas hoy
en el Museo de la Prehistoria de la ciudad. Este nuevo museo es perfecto para conocer la vida en esta época a través de una

visible, Sanxay Sanctuary is one of
France's best-preserved Gallo-Roman

Our ancestors the Gauls
Nearly 2,000 years ago under emperor
Augustus, "Vetus Pictavis" (now Vieux
Poitiers) grew up around its vast
monumental theatre treating 10,000
spectators to a spectacular view of the
city. Destroyed by fire in the late 2nd
century, the ruins of the Gallo-Roman
theatre are open to the public in the
summer.
Europe's oldest Christian building
The Baptistry of Saint John, built in
Poitiers under Emperor Constantine,
contains a remarkable collection of
Merovingian sarcophagi and stunning
11th-13th century murals.

Château d'Harcourt (13C) has a

Montmorillon, like an open book
This quiet, medieval town on the
Gartempe 50 km southeast of Poitiers
earns its title of 'Pays d’Art et d’Histoire'
for its varied architecture, including a
14C Gothic bridge, restored medieval
district (home to the bookish Cité de
l’Écrit) and Romanesque Church of
Notre Dame. Another key monument
is the 11C Maison-Dieu hospital,
later a minor seminary. The unusual
paintings in the Chapelle SaintLaurent were aimed at the priests-to-be.
The unmissable Octogone is Europe's
only 12C funerary chapel.

Charroux, place of pilgrimage
It began when Charlemagne founded the
Benedictine Abbey of Saint Sauveur,
whose 11C tower and cloister survive
today. The nearby 8C town of Charroux
soon became rich and famous, with
pilgrims on St James's Way stopping to
venerate the holy relics and popes and
emperors showering gifts on the town.
The white walls of Loudun
With its old ramparts, medieval streets
and white tuffeau limestone buildings,
Loudun is a real favourite. Get up
close to the 12C Porte du Martray
and climb the Tour Carrée for a view
of Anjou, Touraine and Poitou. The
Maison de l’Art Roman here features
the Romanesque art typical of a medieval
chapel, with sculptures, paintings and
stained-glass windows.
Civray: a feel of the South
Imagine a gorgeous village with a
little square, café terraces and sky-blue
shutters… Not in the Med but on the
banks of the Charente. Welcome to
Civray! The Church of Saint Nicolas
is a treasure of Romanesque art with a
stunning carved arcaded façade.

Montmorillon, como un libro abierto
A 50 km al sureste de Poitiers, con

Su centro histórico rodeado de murallas
y sus callejuelas conquistan los corazones
del viajero. Tras la puerta de Matray
de tiempos de Felipe Augusto se llega
a la Torre Cuadrada desde donde se
obtiene una magnífica panorámica de la
región. En la Casa del Arte Románico,
la puesta en escena recompone una
capilla medieval. En el seno de la
antigua colegiata de la Santa Cruz
se observan hoy restos artísticos de la
Edad Media.
Civray, casi el Sur
Imaginen un pueblo de ensueño con
su placita, sus terrazas de cafés, sus
lindas casas de postigos azules, el campo
alrededor, los pies en el río Charente…
Esto es Civray. En su centro, la iglesia

Touffou or the art of reverie
The Château de Touffou sits in
woodland overlooking the Vienne
Valley. The original 12C Romanesque
fortress was completely redesigned
in the Renaissance and again in the
15C. It has an unusual double keep
and impressive defences including
crenelated and machicolated parapets.
The guided tour includes the chapel,
dungeons, courtrooms, kitchen, bakery
and frescoes. The stunning gardens are
officially listed as a 'Jardin Remarquable'.

Rebuilt in the 17C, the Château des
Ormes was owned by Louis XIV's minister
of war, who withdrew there in 1757, turning
it into an intellectual centre of the Age of

los frescos de la torre de Francisco I. En

caza. El jardín y su rosaleda merecen la

Reconstruido en el siglo XVII por la
familia Colbert, el castillo de Ormes
fue la residencia del ministro de guerra
de Luis XV quien lo transformo en
centro intelectual del Siglo de las Luces.
La minuciosa restauración nos permite
seguir los pasos de Voltaire y Diderot
a través de las avenidas de plátanos
hasta el patio de honor y entren en los
vestíbulos de mármol, cocinas, una
central eléctrica de 1906… No se
pierdan las exposiciones permanentes (el
herbario del Marqués de Argenson de

A gem of French theatre
The 170-year-old neoclassical Théâtre
Blossac, which reopened in 2014 after
a stunning 2-year restoration, was the
focal point of Châtellerault's artistic,
cultural and social life in the mid-19th
century and attracted the country's
top theatre troupes during the Belle
Époque. Today, the little Italianate
theatre is one of only two in France to
still have its original stage machinery.

flat cake of butter, flour, eggs
and sugar that's not shortbread,
shortcrust or flaky pastry and is
traditionally served by punching it
in the middle. Delicious dipped in

Also, try tourteau fromagé, which
is not a savoury dish even though
it's made with goat's cheese and
is not burnt even though it looks
it. It's just a delicious round cake
with a moist, sweet inside!

and different towns have their
own jealously kept recipe. In
Montmorillon, this almond biscuit
is baked in the shape of a crown.

En 1856, a Poitou gardener had
the revolutionary idea of growing
the exotic melon locally, and La
Vienne is now France's biggest
melon producer. Grown in the
clay-limestone soils and handpicked in the dew, the sweet and
fragrant Haut-Poitou melon has a
firm and juicy orange flesh.
Delicious both hot and cold, farci
poitevin is mainly kale and green
vegetables such as sorrel, chard,
spinach and parsley. Vegetarians
love it, and meat-eaters usually add
bacon.
In around 1790, a miller from near
Loudun was the first to grow oaks
to produce the precious truffle.
This is the origin of the Poitou
black truffle, the first Tuber
melanosporum cultivated in the
late 18C. Today, truffles are grown
in Loudun, Chauvigny, Civray
and Poitiers, and truffle markets
are held in December and January.
Guided tours for foodies
Walnuts are a traditional
crop of the region. Founded
in 1850, the Huilerie de
Neuville walnut mill produces
fine walnut oil and has a new
gift shop selling oils, vinegars
and regional produce.
Prized in cooking and medicines
all over the world, saffron is the
dried stigmas of the Crocus Sativus
Linnaeus flower. In the 18C five
tonnes of saffron were produced in
La Vienne, and today you can visit
the few saffron farms continuing
the tradition.

El melón aparece en Egipto en el siglo V
a.C. En 1856 un productor local decide
plantarlo sus tierras. Hoy La Vienne es el
primer productor nacional. El melón del
Alto-Poitou es de una calidad excepcional
con su pulpa naranja y jugosa.
La paternidad del cultivo de la trufa se
atribuye a Pierre Mauléon quien hacia
1790 tuvo la idea de sembrarla al pie de
las encinas. Así nace la trufa negra del
Poitou. Hoy, una centena de truficultores
cubren 300ha entre Loudun, Chauvigny,
Civray y Poitiers. Su aroma llena los
mercados de diciembre a enero.
Apreciado tanto en cocina como en
medicina, el azafrán proviene del secado
de los estigmas de una flor malva, el
Crocus Sativus Linnaeus. En el siglo
XVIII este cultivo era masivo y hoy solo
quedan un puñado de azafraneros locales.

Una torta hecha con mantequilla,
harina, huevos y azúcar que no se parece
a ninguna otra es el “Broyé de Poitou”,
dulce tradicional de la región que se
come dándole un golpe en el centro para
romperla. Pruébenla acompañado un café.
Tourteau fromagé
El “Tourteau Fromagé” (torta de queso)
es una contradicción en sí mismo. Se hace
con queso de cabra fresco pero no es un
dulce. Su costra parece quemada y no es un
error de cocción. Sorprendente, esta media
esfera se toma a todas horas.
Traída de Italia por Catalina de Médicis,
la receta del “macaron” se extiende en
Francia. En Montmorillon, este dulce a
base de almendras tiene la forma de una
corona y es conocido en el mundo entero.
Frío o caliente, el “farci poitievin”
(relleno poitevino) se elabora con hojas
verdes de verduras varias (col, acelga,
espinaca…) y cada casa tiene su receta,
incluso algunos añaden tocino.

institutions.
Besides Poitiers' iconic Couronneries
market, the département's biggest and best
is the 700-year-old Neuville-de-Poitou
market, where the grilled eels are to die for!
Have you heard of the Foire des Hérolles?
You must experience it at least once in your
life: the 300-strong village of Coulonges is
invaded by 10-20,000 visitors to this vast
monthly market. Traditionally a cattle
market, it now features all livestock and much
more, including mole traps and saucepans!

Compras y encuentros
En nuestro territorio rural, los mercados
y mercadillos son instituciones. Los
mercados más importantes son el de
“Couronneries” de Poitiers y el gran
mercado de Neuville-de-Poitou, con su
puesto dominical de anguilas ahumadas.
La feria de Hérolles: hay que verla
una vez en la vida. Por una mañana,
Coulonges (300hab) se convierte en el
lugar de moda y acoge entre 10 y 20 mil
visitantes el 29 de cada mes (excepto si
es domingo). Originalmente dedicada al
ganado, ahora se encuentra de todo. Al
terminar las compras, nada mejor que
un aperitivo con charcutería local.

AOC, bordering on Touraine, and HautPoitou, an AOC since 2011.
Some 20 producers work 450 ha of vines
northwest of Loudun to make white, red,
and sparkling Saumur, which makes a
great aperitif!
The Haut-Poitou vineyards cover 800 ha
near Futuroscope. Neuville-de-Poitou is
the centre, producing Sauvignon blanc,
Chardonnay, Cabernet, Gamay and
Pinot noir wines.

At La Tour Beaumont you can taste
award-winning wines on a 19C farm with
natural cellars dug into the rock.
At Mirebeau, the independent Domaine
de Villemont has opened a wine museum
which all the family will enjoy.
'Ecology and technology' are the
watchwords at Ampelidae, where you
can be a 21C winemaker for the day.
At the Domaine du Bois Mignon, taste

Las fechas claves son las Jornadas Europeas de
Patrimonio (19 y 20 de septiembre 2015).
Una feria medieval invade el pueblo. Al
abrigo de las murallas del castillo, no se pierdan las justas, las acrobacias, el mercado de
artesanos, los oficios, la muestra gastronómica… Aprovechen para visitar la linterna
funeraria, el dolmen, el castillo y la iglesia
con su portal románico.

Nouaillé-Maupertuis
Aviso a trovadores y saltimbanquis… cada
año, 250 voluntarios rememoran la batalla
de 1356 entre franceses e ingleses. Entre
marzo y junio se celebran las “Medievales”
en honor a este combate. A elegir entre la
cena-espectáculo o la visita de la abadía para
aprender divirtiéndose.
