TEXTILE ILLUMINANTS Due to the different light sources, CIE has done a classification, based on its spectral distribution. In particular, it defines the spectral energy distribution of a number of illuminants, (some of which do not exist as light sources), in order to use the description of the colour. Here are the graphs of the spectral distributions of some CIE standard illuminants. Decomposition of white light into its spectrum, as it passes through a prism: Visible spectrum to the human visual sense: ILLUMINANTS The illuminant A is based on incandescent tungsten filament. Spectral distribution corresponds to that of a black body at about 2856 K. The names of the series daylight (daylight) start with a D letter and two digits indicating the approximate colour temperature. D50 has a temperature of about 5,000 K. When the sun is noon, the colour temperature is around 5,000 K. When the sun is on the horizon, the colour temperature is lower. When there are clouds in the sky, it’s about 6,500 K, while at the shade It’s 7,500 K. The standard illuminant E is an equal energy illuminant, (it has the same power at all wavelengths of the light spectrum). It’s a theoretical illuminant used for colorimetric calculations. The standard illuminant F series (F1 to F12) are used to standardize fluorescent lamps. It’s very important to understand the concept of illuminant, to understand and to prevent metamerism in colour reproduction, in the textile industry.
