Today we celebrate, thank and commission our teachers – our Catechists – as they embark on yet another year of educating and forming our children, in their minds, their bodies and their hearts. As Catholic School and Religious Education teachers, their role in our children’s lives is so important to the health and vitality of our families, of our parish community and of our Church as whole. It is a particularly exciting year to be teaching and learning in Catholic Schools and Religious Ed Programs in the U.S. In our classrooms across the country, teachers and students are talking about and preparing for the arrival of Pope Francis, who is himself a great supporter and advocate for Catholic Schools! In an address to some students in Albania a few years ago, he provided a wonderful reminder for us about how our schools should serve our students. “School is one of the educational environments where one grows by learning how to live, how to become grown-up, mature men and women. … Following what St. Ignatius teaches us, the main element in school is learning to be magnanimous … This means having a big heart, having a greatness of soul. It means having grand ideals, the desire to achieve great things in response to what God asks of us and, precisely because of this, doing everyday things, all our daily actions, commitments, and meetings with people well. [It means] doing the little everyday things with a big heart that is open to God and to others.” At St. John Berchmans, it is easy to see our students learning to be magnanimous! A walk through our halls where students are actively participating in science centers, or improvising in music class or delving deep into a novel study would offer you just a glimpse into their big hearts as they achieve great everyday things. The Pope goes on to remind us of the importance of service in our schools. “In your schools you participate in various activities that prepare you not to be wrapped up in yourselves or in your own little world, but to open yourselves to others, especially to the poorest and most in need, to work to improve the world we live in.” Once again, St. John Berchmans students and teachers embody this ideal of service as we continue to collaborate with Catholic Charities, in our work with the Faces of Poverty curriculum, and as we embark on a new project with their help called Works of Mercy. Finally, Pope Francis offers a word of encouragement to our teachers. “Don’t be discouraged by the difficulties that the educational challenge presents! Educating isn’t a profession but an attitude, a way of being. In order to educate you must go out of yourselves and be amidst the young, accompanying them in the stages of their growth, standing beside them.” So, today, I ask you to offer your encouragement to our teachers, too. Take a moment to pray for, thank and think about the good work they do. I know I will do all three. With warmth and gratitude, Peggy Roket Principal @MrsRoket, @sjberchmans Our Mission: Rooted in Christ, touched by His love and mercy, the Saint John Berchmans community finds unity in its diversity, proclaims by Word, Sacrament, and service, that the Kingdom of God is at hand, and declares that all are welcome in this place. 2 September 20, 2015 Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Parish Announcements Support Catholic Charities Work with Local Refugee Resettlement FATHER PAUL HEALTH - UPDATE As you know, in addition to the cancer Father Paul is experiencing a great deal of pain in his right hip. Last spring the decision was made to postpone hip replacement surgery to begin chemotherapy. Due to excellent results from the latest CT Scan, the doctors now believe that this surgery is a necessity to improve Father Paul’s quality of life and help in the fight against his cancer. Catholic Charities has been assisting refugees for more than 40 years, including refugees from Syria. Families are provided housing, household items, clothing, food, job search assistance and other services. Parishes have “sponsored” refugee families and provided both concrete assistance (payment for rent, etc.) and companionship (visiting with parish scout groups, or one on one with adult refugees). To donate money to the Catholic Charities Refugee Resettlement Program, please send checks to: Things are moving quickly, and the surgery is scheduled for Monday, September 21st. Please continue to keep Father Paul, and his doctors, in your prayers as he undergoes surgery and rehabilitation during the coming weeks. It is unknown how long this process will take, or when he will be able to return to the rectory and to active ministry – we will keep you posted. Cards and letters will be gratefully accepted at the rectory office, and we will make sure that he receives them. Catholic Charities Refugee Program Attention: Development Department 721 N. LaSalle Street Chicago, IL 60654 or at www.catholiccharities.net. WOMEN OF FAITH CIRCLE Join us in SJB School Chapel on Tuesday, September 22nd from 7-9pm. During this time we will continue to share our stories and share our faith. Questions? Contact Kathy at 720-291-8904. Refreshments will be served! Please come and bring a friend. To learn more about sponsoring a refugee family or donating goods or services, please contact our Refugee Resettlement Program at 312-655-7856. “Have you ever tried to find your way to a place you have never been before with no directions, no map, and no clear description of the destination? Come, rediscover the great Spiritual North Star: Holiness.” -Matthew Kelly If you missed today’s collection opportunity, please feel free to bring your donation next weekend. Please mark the envelope: Refugee Resettlement Program. If you’d like to help welcome the refugees we house at Saint John Berchmans, please contact Jennifer in the rectory office. SUPPORT THEIR CALL TO THE PRIESTHOOD How many times in our lives has a priest brought healing to you and to your families? How many times has a priest celebrated the liturgy on Sunday, throughout the week and at special parish and family celebrations, bringing Christ to you through the Eucharist? How many times has a priest stood with you in joy at the birth of a child; at your bedside in the hospital, or in sorrow at the death of a loved one? Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) Let us pray for vocations to the priesthood; that we may have priests whose lives are directed by the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the service of God’s people. RCIA, the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults, is a life changing journey of faith for adults who would like to be baptized, those who have already been baptized Catholic and would like to complete the sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation, and those baptized in other Christian faiths who seek full communion with the Catholic Church. The RCIA program at St. John Berchmans will begin in mid October and meet into April. The sacraments are received at the Easter Vigil on March 26, 2016. Thank you for your ongoing prayers and financial support. The Annual Collection for the Seminary System for the Archdiocese of Chicago is September 26-27, 2015. RCIA provides a blessed space and time during which you are invited to explore the Catholic Faith. Meet new friends and learn through prayer and scripture, ask questions, tell stories and grow with a new faith community, led by the Holy Spirit. If you are interested in finding out more, if you know of anyone who might be a candidate for RCIA, or if you are willing to help as a RCIA team member or sponsor, please contact Shelagh Donoghue in the rectory office or at [email protected]. “Be doers of the Word, not hearers only...” Santiago 1:22 5 Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 20, 2015 School News WHAT IS THE SAINT JOHN BERCHMANS SCHOOL BOARD OF SPECIFIED JURISDICTION AND WHAT DOES IT DO? Among all other instruments which are suitable for divine worship, the organ is accorded pride of place because of its capacity to sustain the singing of a large gathered assembly, due to both its size and its ability to give “resonance to the fullness of human sentiments, from joy to sadness, from praise to lamentation. Likewise, the manifold possibilities of the organ in some way remind us of the immensity and the magnificence of God.” (Sing to the Lord: Music in Divine Worship ©2007 United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.) La Campaña Católica Anual para 2015 Programa de Reducción de Deuda “Su Regalo Da Dos Veces” The above quote is evidence of the importance the bishops place on the use of the organ in Roman Catholic liturgy. We are blessed here at St. John Berchmans to have a beautiful pipe organ. Built in 1925, by the Kilgen Pipe Organ Co. of St. Louis, MO, the organ has helped several generations of the faithful worship God in song. The organ has been part of celebrations of major feasts of the church year, regular weekly liturgies, the joys of couples beginning their lives together, and has helped the bereaved as they mourn the loss of loved ones. Sadly, the organ was neglected for several decades, and allowed to fall into a state of disrepair. Thanks to the efforts of former Music Director Jonathan Mercado, the organ has been partially restored and is now playable. However, it still needs a lot of work. Some of the mechanical parts are in need of repair or replacement, and the pipes need voicing, so they there is a consistent sound throughout each rank of pipes.
