God’s Goodness
Dear Friends,
respond to requests for help with unequaled generosity and selflessness.
With my whole heart, I believe that God has planted that goodness in
your hearts. He so wants us to be close to him and to one another that
he places that desire within us. When we discover the inner desire that
God has given us, and when we allow ourselves to act on that desire and
respond to God’s gracious will, amazing things can happen. And at Saint
John Berchmans, they are! Sing God’s goodness with me!
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas.
Perhaps if we look around the neighborhood we
can certainly say that – especially as we pass the
house a few blocks west of the church. But I say,
in the world of Mother Nature, and in the political
social order, it’s beginning to look a lot like we need
Christmas. This twenty-first day of December boasts
the longest night and the shortest day of the whole year. Darkness seems
to be prevailing. As we have been hearing throughout the month of racial
unrest, and cries against the justice system and those entrusted to serve
and protect, the social order appears to be dark too. But the light shines
in the darkness.
As we take this last week in preparation for the coming of Jesus,
I invite you to take some time away from the busyness of the season to
reflect on God’s goodness to you, and just what Christ’s coming means
to you. Just think about it. God has blessed us in so many ways, as a
parish and as individuals. Our response to the goodness of God demands
an attitude of gratitude. We need to thank God by the way we live our
lives. Mary’s vigilance, her fiat, and her willingness to do God’s bidding
give us a great example. Brought about by obedience and gratitude, her
openness to bring the light of Christ to a darkened world, models true
Christian joy and discipleship. Our joy, our smiles, our generosity can bring
Christ to the world. Try it. Be grateful. Smile more. Share what you
have. You will experience more peace, and more fulfillment, more love
this Christmas. Focus on God’s love. Continue to sing the goodness of
the lord, forever. When we do, great things will continue to happen at
Saint John Berchmans!
As I write this, the rectory dining room overflows with gifts donated
by many of you who chose to take an ornament from our giving tree
and provide a present that are being distributed to nearly one hundred
needy children from our school and religious education communities.
This year, Saint John Berchmans sponsored four families from Catholic
Charities too. If you could see the number of packages you would be, as I
am, almost moved to tears by the generosity of the Saint John Berchmans
family.You allow the grace, love and generosity of God to work through
you. His goodness is made manifest by your acts of kindness, hard work
and love. For that I am truly grateful.
This week, invite friends and family members to join you for our
celebration of the Nativity of Our Lord. Help them to know the real joy
of Christmas. May Our Lady be an example to you; may the psalmist’s
word be yours this Christmas, and the light of Jesus dispel whatever
darkness you have in your life, and strengthen you to bring that light to
the world.
Some may say we are in the darkest days of the year, but at Saint John
Berchmans the light of Christ shines brightly. So often I tell others (I told
Archbishop Cupich when I saw him last week!) that Saint John Berchmans
has the very best staff in the whole Archdiocese. The dedication of each
member of the staff knows no bounds. The members of our pastoral
team give without counting the cost. They do not track the number of
hours they work. They never say, “That’s not my job.” They simply do
what needs to be done. Period. We pray together, and meet regularly to
discern the best way to accomplish God’s will for our parish and school.
God’s goodness has brought this team together and guides and protects
our actions.

a generous donation. The gifts received at Christmas will help us to
balance our budget. Please be generous!
As we prepare for the coming at Christ at Christmas, I also sing of
God’s goodness when I reflect on the number of people who, as Mary
did, say yes to the will of God for them in their lives. The number of
people who volunteer to help this parish grows each month. People

ONE WORD AT A TIME...
NOD
If we speak and our listener nods her head, we know that she
has accepted what we say. We know that there is agreement. At
the heart of the story of Advent and Christmas, we know that
we are called to nod to God’s Word. God would not enter this
world unwelcomed. God looks for our nod. And so, the Blessed
Virgin Mary stands for all humanity and nods to the Lord, “Let it
be done to me according to your word.” Then the Word becomes
flesh and dwells among us. We believe that the sacraments bring
us the presence of the living Christ. And we also believe that his
presence is never imposed. As we receive the sacraments, the
Lord looks for us to nod to him and to welcome his sacramental
presence with hearts full of faith.

Christmas and New Year’s Masses
We will begin our celebration of the Nativity
of Our Lord at 4:00pm on Christmas Eve with a
Children’s Mass. At 11:30pm we will begin with
Choral Carols, which will lead into our bilingual
Midnight Mass. Masses on Christmas morning,
will be celebrated at 8:15am and 9:45am in English
and at 11:30am in Spanish.

be celebrated beginning with the 5:00pm on
Wednesday, December 31st. Masses on Thursday,

La Bondad de Dios
Queridos Amigos,
La gente responde a las gestiones de ayuda con incomparable generosidad y
desinterés. Con todo mi corazón, creo que Dios ha plantado esa bondad en
sus corazones. Él quiere que estemos cerca de él y de los demás, por eso ha
puesto ese deseo dentro de nosotros. Cuando descubrimos el deseo interno
que Dios nos ha dado, y cuando permitimos actuar en ese deseo y responder
a la voluntad de la gracia de Dios, increíbles cosas pueden suceder. ¡Y en San
Juan Berchmans, suceden! ¡Canten conmigo sobre la bondad de Dios!
Ya está empezando a verse mas como la Navidad.
Quizás si miramos alrededor del barrio sin duda podemos
decir que – especialmente cuando pasamos enfrente de la
casa a pocas cuadras al oeste de la iglesia se puede ver.
Pero digo que, en el mundo de la madre naturaleza, y en
el orden social y político, está empezando a parecer como
que necesitamos mucho mas la Navidad. Este día vigésimo
primero de diciembre contamos con la noche más larga y el día más corto
del año entero. La oscuridad parece ser predominante. Como hemos estado
oyendo durante todo el mes sobre los disturbios raciales, y gritos alarmantes
contra el sistema de justicia y los que están encargados a servir y proteger, el
orden social parece ser oscuro también. Pero la luz brilla en las tinieblas.
Al tomar esta última semana de preparación para la venida de Jesús,
le invito a hacer a un lado el ajetreo de la temporada y que refleje sobre la
bondad de Dios y lo que verdaderamente significa la venida de Cristo para
usted. Solamente piense en eso. Dios nos ha bendecido de muchas maneras,
como parroquia y como individuos. Nuestra respuesta a la bondad de Dios
exige una actitud de gratitud. Necesitamos dar gracias a Dios por la forma en
que vivimos nuestras vidas. La vigilancia de María, su edicto, y su disposición a
hacer la voluntad de Dios nos dan un gran ejemplo. Debido a su obediencia y
gratitud, su decisión de traer la luz de Cristo a un mundo oscurecido, modela
la verdadera alegría cristiana y el discipulado. Nuestra alegría, nuestra sonrisa,
nuestra generosidad pueden traer a Cristo al mundo. Inténtelo. Sea agradecido.
Sonría más. Comparta lo que tiene. Experimentara más paz, satisfacción, y más
amor en esta Navidad. Concéntrese en el amor de Dios. Continúe cantando
sobre la bondad del Señor, por siempre. Cuando lo hacemos, grandes cosas
continuarán sucediendo en San Juan Berchmans!
Al escribir esto, el comedor de la rectoría se desborda con regalos
donados por muchos de ustedes que optaron por tomar un adorno de nuestro
Árbol de Dar y ofrecer un regalo, los cuales se están distribuyendo a casi un
ciento de niños necesitados de nuestra escuela y la comunidad de Educación
Religiosa. Este año, San Juan Berchmans también patrocinó a cuatro familias
de Caridades Católicas. Si ustedes pudieran ver el número de paquetes
que colectamos, estarían, como yo, conmovidos casi con lágrimas por la
generosidad de la familia de San Juan Berchmans. Ustedes permiten que la
gracia, el amor y la generosidad de Dios obren a través de cada uno de ustedes.
Su compasión se manifiesta por sus actos de bondad, el arduo trabajo y el amor.
Por eso estoy muy agradecido.
Esta semana, invite a sus amigos y miembros de la familia que le
acompañen a nuestra celebración de la Natividad de Nuestro Señor. Ayúdeles a
conocer la verdadera alegría de la Navidad. Que la Virgen sea un ejemplo para
usted; que la palabra del salmista pueda ser suya esta Navidad, y que la luz de
Jesús disipe cualquier oscuridad que usted tenga en su vida, y le fortalezca para
traer la luz al mundo.
Algunos pueden decir que estamos en los días más oscuros del año, pero
en San Juan Berchmans la luz de Cristo brilla intensamente. Muy a menudo
le digo a los demás (¡le dije al Arzobispo Cupich cuando lo vi la semana
pasada!) Que San Juan Berchmans tiene el mejor equipo de personal en toda la
Arquidiócesis. La dedicación de cada miembro del personal no conoce límites.
Los miembros de nuestro equipo pastoral dan incondicionalmente. Ellos no
cuentan el número de horas que trabajan. Nunca dicen: “Ese no es mi trabajo.”
Ellos simplemente hacen lo que se necesita hacer. Y punto. Oramos juntos,
y nos reunimos regularmente para discernir la mejor manera de cumplir la
voluntad de Dios para nuestra parroquia y escuela. La bondad de Dios ha
puesto a este equipo junto, guía y protege nuestras acciones.

PS En Navidad, le animo a que considere el “regalar” a la iglesia con una
generosa donación. Los regalos recibidos en Navidad nos ayudarán a balancear
nuestro presupuesto. ¡Por favor sea generoso!
Mientras que nos preparamos para la venida de Cristo en Navidad, también
canto sobre la bondad de Dios cuando reflejo en el número de personas que,
como María, dicen sí a la voluntad de Dios en sus vidas. El número de personas
que trabajan como voluntarios para ayudar a esta parroquia crece cada mes.

Si, mientras hablamos, nuestro interlocutor asiente con la cabeza,

Restore, Renew, Rejoice!
Christmas is a season that begins the afternoon of December 24 and
concludes on Sunday, January 11, 2015 with the Feast of the Baptism of
Jesus. The entire season is a celebration of the birth of Jesus, the Savior,
who is both Messiah and Lord. It celebrates the manifestation of God’s
Word of life in human flesh.The season wants to tell what this incarnation
means for us, what it realizes through us and what it will represent when
the Lord comes again. The Christmas Season is a celebration of Jesus’ life
in history, sacrament and glory.
Rejoice! “Today in the city of David,a savior has been born for you who is Christ and
Lord.” This is truly our greatest Christmas gift. Each day we are blessed with
the love of Christ, and we are asked to share this love with all around us. We
are continuing to work at leaving a legacy, and we are grateful to all who
are helping us to accomplish our goals with their generosity, their prayers,
their ideas and their support. We are truly a community of love. Each of
us, coming together, contributing in whatever way we can, is the reason that
great things are happening at Saint John Berchmans.
The Vigil, or afternoon Mass of December 24, marks the formal opening
of the Christmas Season. The gospel includes the genealogy of Jesus and
the account of how his birth came about. This situates Jesus’ birth in
the history of Israel. But we also acknowledge that Jesus’ origins also
transcend every biblical generation. Jesus is not just a human son, he is
the very Son of God.
We have said it before, but we cannot say it enough –THANK YOU!
Merry Christmas!
Christmas Day begins with the traditional Mass at Midnight. Luke tells
his wondrous story of the birth of Jesus. We join the shepherds in their
night watch. We hear the angelic proclamation that a Savior is born to us.
He is mortal like ourselves but he is the life and nourishment of us all,
the people of his flock.
¡Alégrense! “Hoy en la ciudad de David, ha nacido
un salvador para ustedes quien es Cristo y Señor.” Éste es
realmente nuestro mejor regalo de Navidad. Cada día somos bendecidos
con el amor de Cristo, y se nos pide compartir este amor con todos
aquellos a nuestro alrededor. Continuamos trabajando en dejar un legado,
y estamos muy agradecidos a todos los que nos están ayudando a lograr
nuestras metas con su generosidad, sus oraciones, ideas y apoyo. Somos
verdaderamente una comunidad de amor. Cada uno de nosotros, unidos,
contribuyendo en todo lo que podamos, esa es la razón que grandes cosas
están sucediendo en San Juan Berchmans.
The Mass at dawn continues the gospel of Luke. The shepherds go to
Bethlehem and see firsthand what the angels have announced. They
glorify God and become the first to spread the gospel which they had
been the first to receive.
The Day Mass of December 25 provides an entirely new synthesis of the
gospel event. The gospel prologue of John celebrates the divine word
made flesh, a word that gives God’s very own life to others and a word
which is light which no darkness will ever overcome. This Word is Jesus,
God’s Son, the Father’s personal revelation.
¡Lo hemos dicho anteriormente, pero no podemos decir lo suficiente GRACIAS!
All the first readings are from Isaiah and are filled with gorgeous images
of light piercing darkness, of release from servitude, of a child who will
reign with justice, of a savior-king who fills the deserted streets with
new life.
¡Feliz Navidad!
The second readings focus on the salvation offered us in the birth of Jesus.
We must live a holy life as grateful people. We also live in hope awaiting
the full manifestation of Jesus’ glory.
