Esperando tengan un buen verano. With warm weather and sunny skies, this time of year is a great time to explore New Haven. Our city provides a wide assortment of events and activities – this month, I am happy to announce a new tool to help New Haven-area residents browse all these events quickly and conveniently: an online events calendar. Developed by the city's Department of Arts, Culture, and Tourism in conjunction with Town Green Special Services District and INFO New Haven, this calendar provides a day-to-day schedule of events, with extensive information on each. I invite you to browse this calendar— available on the INFO New Haven website— to learn more. Since many seasonal activities take place outside, prudent precaution should be taken. After recent rain, mosquitoes are an increased threat, so starting this month free mosquito repellant is available to senior citizens. For more information, please contact the Bureau of Environmental Health: (203) 946-8174. It is also important to stay cool and hydrated at this time of year. All New Haven FreePublic Library locations are air conditioned and should be used when it’s dangerously hot at home. This month I give special thanks to Economic Development Deputy Administrator Mike Piscitelli and Transportation, Traffic, and Parking Director Doug Hausladen for their management of the Route 34 / Exit 2 closure, which went very, very smoothly. We are making great progress toward a downtown that is more connected and mobile, transforming New Haven to a place where complete streets assure that the city remains accessible to all residents through every stage of life. Best wishes for a safe and happy summer. Did you know that New Haven is made up of 24 different communities? Steele-Berger Apartments on Derby Avenue, with its senior/disabled population of around 160 people, is right in the heart of one of these neighborhoods, West River. The West River neighborhood believes in having a productive community that is safe, secure, vital, and full of activity; creating a beautiful place that encourages a positive and active attitude among residents and visitors alike. Part of that beauty is the community garden that is open to everyone who lives in the neighborhood. Developed a few years ago by community advocate Stacy Spell, the garden is a living tribute to those residents that care and nurture not only their own plots of fruits, vegetables and herbs, but several that have been planted as a joint effort for all that toil to enjoy. Thanks to Mr. Spell’s hard work and volunteerism the garden is thriving; there are now close to 20 outdoor beds plus a hoop house. In June, two new raised planting beds accessible to gardeners with limited mobility were added, and running water has just been installed. All that is required to become a member of this growing society is a small donation to the neighborhood foundation and the desire to work and harvest the fruits of one’s labor. Four members of the Steele-Berger Apartment family have enthusiastically created their own plots at the garden. Varon James, Fern Potvin, Dorothy Robinson and Hilde Singuren are showing their green-thumb expertise, nurturing tomatoes, corn, lettuce, strawberries, herbs, squash, melons, beans, leeks and a variety of other tasty treats. Come harvest time these four women will reap the fruits--and vegetables--of their labor. Yes, West River is a unique community and is only getting better. Be a part of it! Want to know more? There is a community meeting the 4th Tuesday of every month at Barnard School on Derby Avenue at Grasso Boulevard (F5 or F6 bus). Check it out and see how to become involved in the many activities that occur throughout the year in West River. 18 NEW HAVEN JULY (JULIO) 2014 o New Haven, Connecticut Department of Elderly Services (Departamento de Servicios para Ancianos en New Haven, Connecticut) Migdalia Castro, Director; 203-946-7854 [email protected] (Directora del Departamento de Envejecientos) Georgiann Dogolo, Elderly Services Specialist (Especialista Servicios Envejecientes); 203-946-2272 Douglas Toth, Elderly Services Specialist (Especialista Servicios Envejecientes); 203-946-8585 Maya Welfare, Newspaper Editor and Spanish Translator (Editora del Periodico y Traductora); [email protected] Mercedes Felix, Spanish Translator (Traductora); 203-946-8200 Gus Cuomo, Circulation Manager (Gerente Circulación); Atwater Senior Center; 26 Atwater Street; Tel. 203-946-8558 Irrita Osborn; Elderly Services Specialist; Dixwell/Newhallville Senior Center; 255 Goffe Street; Tel: 203-946-8541 Michelle Clary-Butler, Elderly Services Specialist; East Shore Senior Center; 411 Townsend Avenue; 203-946-8544 Filomena Fiodella; Elderly Services Specialist; Atwater Senior Center; 26 Atwater Street; Tel. 203-946-8558 IMPORTANT PHONE NUMBERS/NÚMEROS IMPORTANTES MAYOR'S OFFICE — 203-946-8200 (OFIDINA ELDERLY SERVICES—203-946-7854 DEL ALCALDESA) (SERVICIOS DE ANCIANOS) MY RIDE — 203-288-6643 (MI TRANSPORTACIÓN) MARY WADE MEDICAL TRANSPORTATION — 203-562-7222 (TRANPORTACIÓN MARY WADE) POLICE—NON-EMERGENCY—203-946-6316 (POLICÍA NO EMERGENCIA) EMERGENCY—911 (EMERGENCIA) PUBLIC WORKS—203-946-7700 (HOURS 7:00 A.M -3:00 P.M.
