It is a multifaceted lace, mixing Gothic architecture with the rough old fishermen’s quarter of El Cabanyal. There are also fusion restaurants, futuristic museums and two long beaches – Las Arenas and La Malvarrosa. the city | do & see | event highlights destination: valencia The city The Romans founded Valencia in 138 B.C. as Valentia Edetano. After the fall of the Empire, several rulers followed, but few left as strong an impression as the Moors who in the 11th century made Valencia the capital of an independent northern Muslim kingdom. A Moorish mosque once stood where the city’s cathedral is today, and there is still a Muslim bathhouse on Calle Almirantes in the old part of town. Valencia’s golden years are clearly reflected in its architecture. There are Gothic buildings all over the city including the silk exchange La Lonja, and extravagant Baroque churches. Much of this wealth came from trading farm produce and silk. The Valencia of today continues to thrive, most clearly shown by the impressive La Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias. The world famous architects Santiago Calatrava and Felix Candela have created a futuristic cityscape with a number of museums and attractions that is truly astonishing. Valencia’s other great attraction is the Mediterranean Sea, bordered by the still rough old fishermen’s quarter of El Cabanyal and the long beaches of Las Arenas and La Malvarrosa. do & see Many of Valencia’s sights are located in the area commonly known as La Seu. This is located between the city’s two large squares, Plaza de la Reina and Plaza Virgen. This is where you will find the octagon clock tower Miguelete and Capilla del Santo Cáliz, home of what many consider to be the real Holy Grail. You will find everything from haute cuisine restaurants to fusion eateries, but the best bets are the traditional Spanish ones. Paella (the rice dish where basically any available ingredient gets used) was invented in Valencia and is served in almost every restaurant. The locals eat late and most restaurants don’t fill up until after 10 p.m. Seu-Xerea English chef Stephen Anderson runs the city’s most ambitious restaurant. It has dark red walls, strict lines, white linen tablecloths and large wine glasses. The menu is full of surprises, with dishes such as Oriental fishcakes with tzatziki, strawberry gazpacho, artichokes with foie gras, and the lamb dish paletilla de cordero con tabouleh y jugo de romero. Address: Calle Conde de Almodóvar 4 Tel: +34-96-392 4000 Palace Fesol It has come a long way from its supposedly humble origins serving fesoles (lima beans) to the city’s poor. The best dish at this luxurious restaurant is the gambas (shrimp) carpaccio with raspberry vinaigrette. The green tiles of the open kitchen are a beautiful feature of the interior. Address: Calle Hernan Cortes 7 Tel: +34-96-352 9323 La Pepica This Paella restaurant on the sea front is over one hundred years old. Among those who have sat here and enjoyed the rice covered seafood is the American author Ernest Hemingway. Spanish Touristboard© Ca´n Bermell Located in a 17th century palace in the heart of the Barrio del Carmen district, and managed by the effusive Senor Emili Bermell. The cuisine is Valencian and this is one of the best places in the city to enjoy the caldosa dishes boiled in bouillon and served with rice. Address: Calle Santo Tomás 18 Tel: +34-96-391 0228 Hotel Lido If you want to leave the city, go for a walk in fashionable neighbourhoods and enjoy lunch and a stunning view from the shade of a pine tree, this is the place to visit. The Hotel Lido’s speciality is rossetjat torrentí, a hearty rice dish with chickpeas, potatoes and meat. Address: Calle Juan Ramón Jiménez 5 i El Vedat de Torrent Tel: +34-96-155 1500 Tascas (tapas bars) The best place for tapas is the somewhat rough fishermen’s quarter, El Cabanyal. The anchovy tapas of Bodega Montaña are legendary, Ocho y Medio (on Plaza Lope de Vega) serves gourmet tapas and Bar El Pilar (on Calle Moro Zeit) is the oldest tapas bar in Valencia. Address: Paseo Neptuno 6 Tel: +34-96-371 0366 Make your trip start at home | www.arrivalguide s.com Cafés The locals are particular about their coffee. For example, they only have café con leche for breakfast, often with a croissant. At midday they tend to go for an espresso, a café solo, or a cortado – espresso with a drop or two of milk. Café Sant Jaume One of the city’s large cafés, complete with bar, attracting an artistic and cultural clientele. This is where the Bohemians, the gays, the lesbians, artists, students, and some of the Valencia football club players come. Look at the ceiling: the wooden beams are beautifully carved. Address: Calle Caballeros 51 Café Valiente After a visit to Valencia’s Gothic cathedral, come here for a coffee or a caña, a small glass of beer. Café Valiente is also good for late breakfast eaters. Address: Plaza de la Virgen, on the corner of Calle Navellós Horchateria de Santa Catalina Horchata is a Spanish speciality which some people like and others cannot stand. It’s a drink made from the chufas root and sipped through straws from tall glasses. Horchata tastes a little of almonds. Address: Plaza Santa Catalina 6 Bars & nightlife | shopping destination: valencia a wider audience thanks to the appearance of his work in Pedro Almodóvar’s movies. Address: Calle Trinitarios 12 Purificacion Garcia Spanish fashion design can quite easily become a bit loud and flamboyant. Purificacion Garcia represents more elegant sophistication, often in sensual materials. Address: Calle Colón 17 Spanish Touristboard© BARS & NIGHTLIFE Spanish cities are often described as party destinations in foreign travel guides. But Valencia is considered to have the best nightlife of all, even among the Spaniards themselves. This is partly because of the large – 100,000 strong – student population. The locals go out late, usually not until 11 p.m., and most bars stay open until 2 a.m. or even later. The city’s main party street is Calle Caballeros in the Barrio Carmen neighbourhood. Come here for a mix of tascas (see ”Restaurants”), bars, and clubs. Simply ask around to find out which night-clubs are in vogue at the moment. These are some of the area’s best bars: Carmen Sui Generis Luxurious bar with a hard to define mix of poetry evenings, theatre performances, and DJs spinning funk and 1980’s disco. Fortunately not all of it simultaneously. The 12th century city wall can be seen in some places. Address: Calle Caballeros 38 Johnny Maracas Latino culture reigns supreme at Johnny’s. Order a mojito or an agua de Valencia (cava, orange juice and vodka) and try to move your body smoothly to the rhythm of the beat. Address: Calle Caballeros 39 Fox Congo The bar is made out of onyx, and is supposedly the most expensive in the world. Address: Calle Caballeros 35 Café del Negrito A laid-back bar that attracts intellectuals, the cultured and the fashion-conscious. Good for peoplewatching. Address: Plaza del Negrito 1 SHOPPING Plaza del Ayuntamiento, as well as Calle Don Juan de Austria and Calle Colón streets form the hub of Valencia’s shopping district. Address: Calle Pintor Sorolla 26 El Mercado Central Valencia’s large covered food market is a must (it’s located opposite the silk exchange and La Lonja – see ”Sights”). There are 1200 stalls to visit. The La Lonja restaurant and tapas bar has been owned by the same family since the 1930’s and is a convenient spot for lunch.
