To be an artist is to follow one's vocation.
This is true for all artists - painters, writers,
musicians, sculptors, poets, architects,
actors, dancers.
A vocation is not the same as a profession,
although one may lead to the other. It is
perhaps true that "Art chooses the artist"!
Sensitivity and passion are essentials of the
nature of the artist. Passion gives impulse to
artistic creation. Sensitivity allows the artist
to capture elements surrounding his
existence, and sometimes, things which have
yet to happen, a kind of premonitory
creativity. In this way, some artists are like
"sensorial receptors"of the future. This is
true of artists with the talent to really create
and invent.
The artist needs a certain force, personality,
energy, commitment (sincerity) and vision
in what he is doing. I speak for professional
artists, artists who live by their art, not
artists who make "artistic" things.
I am personally very active, a bit famous,
and I have plenty of exhibitions in France,
Europe and elsewhere in the world. One
may think it is not so difficult for artists like
me, who live by their arts, to succeed, but in
reality it is very difficult. For me and for all
artists.
The images that the public has are often far
from reality. Wall Street artists like Jeff
Koons hurt the image (and spirit) of artists
who struggle to earn a living by their works.
Their passion, devotion and belief in what
they are doing impells them as artists to
continue against many obstacles. When
