CA Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) letters are being mailed home to parents of current students in Grades 4, 5, & 6 this week.
The CA Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) System is intended to provide parents and students more accurate and actionable information about what students have learned in Grades 3, 4, 5, & 6 last school year. The assessments that comprise the CAASPP administration are a mix of online and paper-‐pencil assessments. The online component contains the Smarter Balanced English language arts/literacy (ELA) and mathematics tests. The paper-‐

Our kids were hardly in school a week when 28, yes 28, loaded dump trucks drove through Byerrum Park and onto the Raymond `ield to dump load after load of “super dirt”. It was a crazy sight! After talking with Gumer and Joe, FSD Landscape staff who were directing these turquoise monster trucks, I learned this dirt had made it’s way to our school straight from the Rose Bowl. 1!

WELCOME, NEW FACES!
Mrs. Kimberly Reed - Kindergarten
Please welcome Mrs. Reed to her K-‐2 classroom! To get to know her a little bit, she answered some questions for us last week...”I am a Colorado native and this is my eighth year of teaching. I have a Master of Education degree in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment. I used to `igure skate competitively and I was a `igure skating instructor through college. Since I am new to California, I love going sight-‐
seeing. My favorite thing to do on the weekends is go for a walk on the beach with my husband. We just moved to a place in Huntington Beach that is only six blocks from the water! I had a motorcycle for three years and I'm hoping to ride motorcycles again soon. I have two small parrots named Bumby and Cali. “
“There have been several fun moments at Raymond so far, but I remember on the tenth day of school, I was in the middle of teaching a math lesson and one of my students stood up and gave me a hug. Surprised by the sweet gesture, I said, "Aw thank you." All of a sudden the rest of my students rushed me and gave me a big hug and said "I love you Mrs. Reed." That is when I fell in love with Kindergarten. My class is so sweet to me and to one another. I love watching them grow socially and academically every day. I am so glad to be a part of the Raymond family and I am looking forward to a great year!”
Mrs. Melissa Pepin - Transitional Kindergarten (TK)
Welcome back Mrs. Pepin! You can `ind her with her students in room 14! A few years ago she worked with students in Raymond’s After School Program and now she’s rolled right into her new job with the TK. Here are some tidbits about Mrs. Pepin....
My favorite movie is “The Princess Bride”. My husband laughs at me because I quote some part of that movie almost every single day. (“As you wish!”)
What do you most enjoy gobbling down? I love dessert, especially chocolate. I am a HUGE fan of Yogurtland frozen yogurt and love Starbucks Frappaccinos as well. “ Thanks & welcome, Mrs. Pepin!
“This is my `irst year teaching, although I have worked in the education `ield for nearly 10 years. My most interesting teaching job was working for the Andre Agassi Foundation in Las Vegas, NV as their Education Director of Elite Sports Programs. I worked speci`ically with young tennis players (3rd -‐ 12th grade) who had goals of becoming a professional tennis player, or obtaining a sports scholarship through an NCAA division 1 college. When I am not teaching or lesson planning, I love to cook for my family and browse various food/cooking websites to try new recipes. In TK, there is something fun happening every day. I love seeing my young students experience something new and exciting. So far, one of my favorite moments was when we were learning about our sense of taste. I l laughed so hard seeing their surprise when the class realized the “lemonade” they just tasted was really just lemon juice.
I am Mom to my 5 year old daughter, Aubrey, who just started kindergarten. I also have 2 dogs (Jake and Bella) and 2 beta `ish (Goldie & Fishy). Have f

it’s a “monster Book Fair”
Raymond Elementary received an incredible profit from this
fall’s Book Fair sales. The funds are to be used to keep new
books coming into the library and to support literacy in the
classrooms.
How many eyeballs?
TOTAL: 163
The closest guesses came from:
third grader, Yoltzin,
and sixth grader, Cameron !
Each received a book and
a bunch of eyeball candies!
Best selling books included Descendants Jr. Novel, Peppa
Pig, Pokemon Deluxe Handbook, Lego Ninjago, and I
Survived the Joplin Tornado. Lots and lots of books
were sold along with a whopping 59 Top Secret UV
Thank you to the 115 parents and special guests who
visited Raymond during the Family Lunch event. We
hope you enjoyed having lunch with your student; they
are always so excited about that day!
The “Teeth for Max the Monster” contest to support
Scholastic’s All for Books Program was quite a hit also!
Over $200 was raised and students enjoyed finding their
name on a paper tooth in the book fair. The funds were
used to select books from the fair to put in the Raymond
library. For each dollar we raise, Scholastic also donates
one book to organizations for children in need.

rewarded for their substantial participation! These three
classes received a popcorn and
lemonade treat at recess. Thank you
families for your support!
A huge THANK YOU to Jenny Fuentes-‐Sanders for all her Monster and Eyeball creations for this fair and for substantially donating her time for the prep work!

STARBASE program
5th Grade (some 4th and some 6th)
Ms. Watts' class, Mrs. Beleber's class, and Mrs. Collins’ class took a `ield trip to the Los Alamitos Military Base and attended the STARBASE program which was all about engineering and hands-‐on experiences for the kids. This program is chosen by the Department of Defense and the lessons are adapted to `it a “hands-‐on, minds-‐on” approach. The three classes enjoyed this adventure `ive different times last month!
From the students.....
“We built rockets, we painted them and we partnered with another student and launched them. It was so much fun! We couldn’t `ind where some landed. One day we made slime!”
“We learned to program a Lego robot to make it pick something up and deposit it in the trash. If we were successful at making this work, the teachers gave us Darth Vader rings!”
“The rings had been made by a 3D printer. We got to watch how a 3D printer works also!”
The students were exposed to tech environments and were able to apply their science and engineering studies in a real-‐
world setting.

I would like to welcome you all, once again, to Raymond! Our 2015/16 school year is off to a great start, with lots of wonderful events coming up!
We’ve enjoyed so many activities already, including the amazing Monster Book Fair! A great big thank you to the parents who worked so hard to put this together and get all our kids excited about books and reading!
We are also in full swing with our PTA membership drive and fall fundraiser. These are both important for raising funds to provide wonderful `ield trips for our students. Forms and packets are available in the of`ice.
Coming up in just a couple of weeks, is our annual fall carnival! This is a great event for the entire family! We have a few new surprises in store, so plan on coming out for some spook-‐tacular fun on Friday, October 23rd!
Thank you for your continued support.
