From 1999 to 2006, O’Donohue was an annual presenter at the Los Angeles Religious Education Congress. He was scheduled to present two workshops at Congress this year. The author of “Anam Cara,” a best-seller published in England in 1997 and later in the United States, O’Donohue also authored “Eternal Echoes,” “Beauty, The Invisible Embrace” and most recently “Benedictus: A Book of Blessings” in addition to two books of poetry. Reprinted below is a blessing he wrote especially for our 2006 Congress Opening Event. A BLESSING FOR FREEDOM As a bird soars high In the free holding of the wind, Clear of certainty of ground, Opening the imagination of wings To trust the grace of emptiness And fulfill new voyagings, May your life awaken To the call of its freedom As the ocean absolves itself Of the expectation of land Through approaching only In the form of waves That fill and pleat and fall With such gradual elegance As to make of the limit An utterly creative threshold Whose music echoes out along Its give and strain of sea memory, May your heart know the freedom That can draw beauty from limitation. As the embrace of the earth Will welcome all we call death, Taking deep into itself The tight solitude of a seed, Allowing it all the time it needs To shed the grip of its former form And give way to a deeper generosity That will one day send it forth As a tree into Springtime, May all that holds you Of smallness and loss Fall from its hungry ledge Into the creative clay of your heart. ROBERT BARRON The church’s primary mission is to proclaim Jesus as Lord. This call is rooted in a tradition going back to St. Paul for whom proclaiming Jesus as “Lord” was an absolute stand against the powers and authorities of the world – political, cultural, economic and military. When we look at Jesus we see him as gatherer of the lost, embodiment of the Kingdom, friend of sinners, victor over death. Those involved in the ministry of catechesis are challenged to see -– and help others see – the world through the lens of Jesus, and to model their lives on the pattern of Christ’s own life. F R I D A Y We rejoice because God has claimed us and named us and loved us and continues to celebrate us all as a people who stumble in the darkness but continue to keep our gaze fresh and bright. We rejoice because we are not bound by our blindness; we are not limited by our finite horizons; we are not defined by those principalities and powers that cloud our vision, that diminish our spirit. We are claimed by God because our God – believe it or not – believes in us! Our God truly is an awesome God who shares the divine spark in each of us; Our God is worthy of our praise because we are graced with possibility, with hope, with the potential to be more than we are, to be the eyes, hands, ears, and heart of God! Our God has given us the Christ, the anointed one, the one who places mud and clay on our eyes and our hearts, so that the blockage may be set free; so that we may lift our gaze and see anew! We celebrate the gift of Jesus Christ, the gift of new life, of new sight, and new hope. With this flame, our hearts burn with the joy that comes in surrendering our lives to the one who calls each of us by name; the one who moves and stirs within us, and helps us to really see again. This Christ, this light, will be for us this weekend a sign and call for us to lift our gaze beyond the petty, beyond our differences, beyond our selfishness and egos, to see anew, to live anew, to sing anew! 36 OPENING RITE & WELCOME 2008 Religious Education Congress ARENA OPENING RITE & WELCOME Friday, February 29, 2008, 8:30 am PRELUDE Sizohamba / We Will Walk With God Swaziland trad., arr. by John Bell Arena Text: Swaziland traditional, trans. by John L. Oh, I could stop and count successes like diamonds in my hand, but those trophies could not equal to the grace by which I stand. F R I D A Y REFRAIN: In Christ alone I place my trust and find my glory in the power of the cross. In ev’ry victory let it be said of me: My strength, my source of hope is Christ alone. In Christ alone will I glory, for only by His grace I am redeemed. Only His tender mercy could reach beyond my weakness to my need. Now, I seek no greater honor then just to know Him more, and to count my gains as losses to the glory of my Lord. Marchionda, O.P. Refrain 1. We’ve all suffered pain and sorrow, over folks that we have lost. But by trusting what our Lord won for us, we find strength to bear that cross. 2. There is sadness, oh, such grieving, when the ones we love depart. But we’ll cherish all they mean to us, for they’ll always live in our hearts. 3. There are some folks who die worried, feeling burdened by their sins. But, we’ll know that Jesus saves them all, and that they will rise again. 4. Those who earthly lives have ended join the saints in heav’n above. And, we living, who are joined with them, create one communion of love. 5. Now our loved ones live with angels in that holy heav’nly throng. And, since we are still so bound to them, we can joyfully sing along. Text: Adlz Habershon. Music by Chas. My problems had me bound, depression weighed me down, but God held me close so I wouldn’t let go. God’s mercy kept me so I wouldn’t let go. I almost gave up, I was right at the edge of a breakthrough but couldn’t see it. The devil really had me, but Jesus came and grabbed me, And He held me close so I wouldn’t let go. God’s mercy kept me so I wouldn’t let go. So I’m here today because God kept me. I’m alive today only because of His grace. Oh, He kept me. God kept me, He kept me so I wouldn’t let go. Stretch the edges of your view. Let the peace of God abound. Open wide your heart to see the wonders of God’s love; unveil the gifts God placed inside of you – lift your gaze and see anew! When the eye catches fire, God will then be seen. A beam of light in the dark of night sparks a ray of hope supreme. The sightless eyes are transformed to see all things anew. The wisdom of God’s sight becomes our view – lift your gaze and see anew! 3. Just a glimpse through God’s eyes, what wonders can there be? The lame can walk, the dumb can talk, the blind man now can see. Just a glance, a second chance to stand in liberty; Ignite the spark for all humanity – lift your gaze and see anew! Arena 2. BRIDGE/PUENTE A vision of peace in time of war. Hope in despair; Refuge in the midst of a storm: Let us see through the eyes of God. CODA Voice 1: Lift your gaze and see anew. Alza tu mirada y vuelve a mirar. Voice 2: Just open your eyes and see, see anew. Abre tus ojos y ve; vuelve a mirar. Voice 3: God of seeing, God of sight, help us see anew. It is our hope that every Director of Religious Education and Director of Youth Ministry will be given the opportunity to receive a master’s degree in Religious Education/Religious Studies. Any additional contribution through mail-in registrations and those who registered online could contribute to this Fund. As of January 25, 603 people responded with contributions totaling $8,850. We sincerely appreciate and acknowledge their contributions. The fund is currently enabling 10 students to pursue a master’s degree in Religious Education, and you will be happy to know that several have already graduated! $190 Contribution Alan Aversa $120 Contribution Paul Auer $100 Contribution Sr. John Fisher Parish Denise Clark Joseph Cruz Monica Dang Nick Jordan Steven Killgore Susan Murphy Charles Niblick Andrew Stuffler Steven Von Dohlen $65 Contribution Patrick Callahan $60 Contribution Kathleen Ory $55 Contribution Susan Collins $50 Contribution Louanne Fay Brian Bernardis Lapurisima Chang Margaret Cox Ann Dufour Steven Dzida Fr John Ebbesmier Ramon Escuadro Cory Escuadro Thomas Grasmehr Nancy Grasmehr Alene Griffin Adela Guillen Coke Frank Hathaway Mary A Hopp James W Hopp Sally Killgore Grace Krajacic Denis Lynch Kathleen Mercer Marilyn Monagle Helen Ohallaron Vic Reichert Rev.
