This is the theme for the Third Annual
Ozark Catholic Conference to be held on
the St. Vincent De Paul campus Saturday,
August 6th, hosted by the Northwest
Arkansas Deanery! Tying into the theme
of the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of
Mercy, the keynote talks and workshop
presentations will center on GodÊs Mercy
toward us and the mercy we are called to extend to others through the corporal and spiritual works.
We welcome Dr. Edward Sri from Littleton, Colorado with the Augustine Institute as our English keynote
speaker, and Fr. Jose De Jesus Sanchez from California with the Archdiocese of Los Angeles as our Spanish
keynote speaker. Check out the next page of the bulletin for more details on these two outstanding speakers.
You will have an opportunity to listen to both of these engaging, Catholic speakers and be encouraged and
inspired by their message!
Along with the keynote speakers, we will also have workshop presentations on the Corporal and Spiritual
Works of Mercy. Watch the bulletin each week for small tidbits of information on these speakers and their topics.
In addition, St. Vincent De Paul Uniquely Catholic Bookstore, St. RaphaelÊs Gift Shop, Little Rock Scripture
Study, Oregon Catholic Press will be available in our gathering space all day to offer to us great Catholic resources.
To kick off the conference, we will host a free concert open to the public on Friday evening, August 5, from 7
to 8:30pm in the worship space. Curtis Stephan and Jaime Cortez, two of the most currently popular, nationally
known, Catholic musicians will be singing and playing their published works of music used throughout liturgies
and worship events. On Saturday, they will also join us as workshop presenters and will lead our music at the 5pm
closing Mass.
Tickets are now on sale at www.ozarkcatholicconference.org. The cost is $30/person through July 10th. After
July 10th , the cost goes up to $45. Price of admission includes lunch and entrance to the conference for the full

Dr. Edward Sri is a theologian, author and well-known Catholic speaker who
appears regularly on EWTN. He has written several Catholic best-selling books,
including A Biblical Walk through the Mass which was used in about 1 out of 4
parishes in the USA in preparation for the new translation of the Mass. His most
recent book is Walking with Mary: A Biblical Journey from Nazareth to the
Cross. He currently serves as a professor of theology and Vice President of
Mission and Outreach at the Augustine Institute in Denver, Colorado.
Dr. Sri is a founding leader with Curtis Martin of FOCUS (Fellowship of
Catholic University Students). He also is the content director and host of the
acclaimed video series on the Catholic faith called Symbolon (Augustine
Institute), and he serves the general editor of Opening the Word: Journey
through the Sunday Readings (Augustine Institute). Dr. Sri holds a doctorate
from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome. He resides with his wife Elizabeth and their seven
children in Littleton, Colorado.

El Padre José de Jesús Sánchez Salcedo, MSpS has 25 years as a Missionary of
the Holy Spirit. He received master's degree in philosophy and in spiritual
direction. He received a Bachelor of spiritual theology and a degree in Spiritual
Counseling at the Teresian University of Rome. He currently serves as vocation
director for the Missionary of the Holy Spirit and for the Diocese of Los
Angeles. He is the Spiritual Director for Priests in Los Angeles California. He is
the author of the book, The Holy Spirit is the GPS of our Soul. He speaks
regularly on the radio station, El Sembrador.

Salcedo, MSpS, tiene 25 años como Misionero del Espíritu Santo. Recibió el
grado de bachiller en filosofía y maestría en la dirección espiritual. Curso una
licenciatura en teología espiritual y Diplomado en asesoramiento espiritual en la
Universidad Teresiana de Roma. Actualmente se desempeña como director de vocaciones de los Misioneros del

Whether laying down a track or drawing others into prayer through a soulful
ballad, God has inspired Curtis Stephen to use music as another form of
evangelization. Curtis admits, „ItÊs easier to give someone a CD and have them
listen to the words than it is to preach or teach directly. ItÊs undercover
catechesis.‰ After his first piano lesson at age 5, he discovered trumpet in the 5th
grade, later followed by picking up the guitar. Sought after as a Cantor at
Masses from his youth, playing within the context of worship and liturgy flows
effortlessly from a heart that desires to share God and how He has touched his
life. Thus later when the Youth Music Minister position opened at St. AnnÊs
Catholic Church in Coppell, TX, his heart was prepared to „duc in altum‰ or
„put out into the deep‰ as Pope JPII instructed. Under the direction of the
Holy Spirit, he now continues to minister as the Music Director of this active
Parish exceeding an impressive 28,000 members. „The Catechism talks about
how art is an overflowing, an out-flowing of the Spirit in our lives. ItÊs important for artists to be able to use their
talents, and itÊs important for the Church, the people of God, to support artists of all different types. ... Let the
Spirit guide the Church, let him breathe life every day into the Church and all the arts.‰

Born in New York and raised in El Salvador, Jaime Cortez is fluent in both
English and Spanish. His involvement in the pastoral music ministry at St.
Bridget Church in Mesa, Arizona reflects his long-term dedication to promoting
better Hispanic liturgies and bringing cultures together for worship.
Jaime has made presentations at the Los Angeles Hispanic Liturgy
Conference, the Southwest Catechetical Leadership Conference and NPM
Conferences, as well as local events for the Diocese of Phoenix. In addition to
workshops, Jaime gives concerts with both English and Spanish repertoire, alone
or with volunteer groups. His main instrument is guitar, although he is proficient
in piano and other stringed instruments such as charango, vihuela and bass
guitar. Jaime is currently music director at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Mesa,
Arizona. He lives in Mesa with his wife, Kari, and three children.

Jay Carney, Ph.D., is Assistant Professor of Theology and Director of African
Studies at Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska. His research focuses on
modern Catholic history and theology in Africa, particularly the Great Lakes
region (e.g., Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, Tanzania and the Democratic Republic
of the Congo). He is also interested in the spirituality of Christian social
reconciliation, political theology, and the history of Christian missions. His first
book, Rwanda Before the Genocide: Catholic Politics and Ethnic Discourse in
the Late Colonial Era (Oxford University Press, 2014) received the African
Studies AssociationÊs 2015 Ogot Prize for best book in East African studies. He is
now working on a long-term project exploring post-colonial Catholic leadership
in Uganda. Carney holds a B.A. in history and political science from the
University of Arkansas, a Masters of Divinity from Duke University Divinity
School, and a Ph.D. in Church History from The Catholic University of America. Prior to coming to Creighton, he
served as a campus minister at St. Thomas Aquinas University Parish in Fayetteville, and he continues to bleed
Razorback red in the midst of Cornhusker Nation

Patrick Gallaher is a cradle Catholic, an attorney and retired lieutenant
colonel from the United States Marine Corp. Patrick has served the Diocese of
Little Rock as the Executive Director of Catholic Charities of Arkansas since
October 31, 2011.
Patrick has been married for 30 years to his wonderful wife, Miriam (a former
Marine Captain), with whom he has home-schooled five children and is the
proud grandfather of two.

Rosary Club The St. Vincent de Paul Rosary Club is looking for people
with the time and talent to spread the wishes of Mary to „Continue always
to pray the Rosary every day‰. Our parishioners, missions and Catholics

Frank Head was born in Houston, Texas in 1947. Frank received his
Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations from the University of Texas
at Austin in 1969. In July 2000 he became the Director of Catholic Charities
Immigration Services of Springdale. Catholic Charities Immigration Services
(CCIS) is an independent 501-3c non-profit ministry of the Diocese of Little
Rock. CCIS serves more than 17,000 low-income immigrants annually with the
goal of re-unifying families torn apart by the consequences of immigration laws.
CCIS also resettles UN-approved refugee families. CCIS is an immigration-law
provider authorized the Immigration Appeals Court. Frank has served
immigrants in many ways and his heart is a heart of service. He has regular
speaking forums of immigration laws and changes in immigration. He is fluent
in English and Spanish. Together with his wife, Phyllis, has raised six children,
aged 41 to 27 years.

Cackie Upchurch, nominated this year by Bishop Anthony Taylor; Bishop of the
Little Rock Diocese for the Lumen Christi Award. The Lumen Christi Award is
presented to an individual or group of people who have demonstrated how the
power of faith can transform lives and society. If youÊve read Scripture study
guides in the past two decades, youÊve probably read Cackie UpchurchÊs work.
After earning a masterÊs degree in theology and teaching high school religion
early in her career, Upchurch joined Little Rock Scripture Study, first as
associate director and since 1998 as director. The associate editor of The Bible
Today since 2001, she was deeply involved in the Little Rock Catholic Study
Bible printed in 2011 and has written 30 Scripture study guides. The study
materials have been printed more than 3 million times in several languages.
SheÊs an inspirational speaker who serves churches all over the diocese and has
traveled far and wide to spread the word of God·interpreting scripture for the
average parishioner everywhere from Arkansas to China.
