Pastor’s Notes
The Baptism of the Lord
Jesus, by accepting the Baptism of John, is proclaiming that he was fully accepting the human condition
under original Sin. Jesus is one like us in all things
except sin. Through the Baptism of John, a baptism
of repentance, Jesus is embracing all of our human
frailness, and rejecting the temptation of power and
control. Jesus accepted that he could do nothing
without being in communion with the Father in the
power of the Holy Spirit.
We can quickly recall that when Jesus was 12 years
old, he wanted to begin his ministry in the temple in
the midst of the “Doctors of the Law”. Mary quickly
corrected him, he would not be part establishment,
with its illusion of power, but would grow in wisdom
and understanding through the Father’s love. Jesus
was always in communion with the Father, thus
making all of his human nature holy. By embracing
that humanity until death (Obedient until death) he
has united God and humanity for all eternity in his
Person. Through our Baptism, through the Holy
Spirit, we die with him in order to rise with him so
that we might live now and always in him.
Baptism of Children
Frequently people will criticize Catholics for baptizing their children. Many say that since Jesus was
baptized as an adult, today only adults should be
baptized. Those who think this way do not understand that through the baptism that Jesus gives us, it
is the gift of new life in him, through the power of
the Holy Spirit. Through Christian Baptism we are
reborn into the Body of Christ and made a Member
of the People of God. Jesus received the symbolic
baptism of John, a sign of repentance, something
radically different from our Christian Baptism. However, we also need to remember that Jesus was made
a “Member of the People of God” as a Jew, through
circumcision when he was 8 days old. Since Jesus
was made a Member of the People of God as a baby,
is it not correct that we all should be made members
as babies? A Catholic is fully initiated in the Community through the three sacraments of Baptism,
Confirmation and Eucharist. We also need to remember that only sinners can be fully initiated, for which
reason, children are not confirmed nor receive the
Eucharist.

El Bautismo del Señor
Jesús, al aceptar el bautismo de Juan, está proclamando que estaba aceptando plenamente la condición
humana bajo el pecado original. Jesús es uno como
nosotros en todos cosas excepto en el pecado. A
través del bautismo de Juan, el bautismo de arrepentimiento, Jesús acepta nuestra fragilidad humana, y rechaza la tentación del poder y el control. Jesús aceptó
que no podía hacer nada sin estar en comunión con el
Padre en el poder del Espíritu Santo.
Rápidamente podemos recordar que cuando Jesús
tenía 12 años, quería comenzar su ministerio en el
templo en medio de los "Doctores de la Ley". María
rápidamente lo corrigió, no sería parte del establecimiento, con su ilusión de poder, sino que crecería en
sabiduría y entendimiento a través del amor del Padre. Jesús estaba siempre en comunión con el Padre,
haciendo toda su naturaleza humana santa. Al aceptar
la humanidad hasta la muerte (Obediente hasta la
muerte) se ha unido a Dios ya la humanidad por toda
la eternidad en su persona. A través de nuestro bautismo, por medio del Espíritu Santo, nosotros a morimos
con él para resucitar con él a fin de que vivamos ahora y siempre en él.
Bautizos de Niños
Con frecuencia la gente critica a los católicos por
bautizar a sus hijos. Muchos dicen que como Jesús
fue bautizado como un adulto, hoy en día sólo los
adultos deben ser bautizados. Los que piensan así no
entienden que a través del bautismo que Jesús nos da,
es el don de la vida nueva en él, a través del poder del
Espíritu Santo. Por el bautismo cristiano, nacemos de
nuevo en el Cuerpo de Cristo y nos convertimos en
miembros del Pueblo de Dios. Jesús recibió el bautismo simbólico de Juan, un signo de arrepentimiento,
algo radicalmente diferente de nuestro bautismo cristiano. Sin embargo, también debemos recordar que
Jesús fue hecho un "miembro del Pueblo de Dios"
como un Judío, a través de la circuncisión cuando
tenía 8 días de edad. Puesto que Jesús fue hecho un
miembro del Pueblo de Dios como un niño, ¿no es
correcto que todos debemos hacernos miembros como bebés? Un católico está completamente iniciado
en la Comunidad a través de los tres sacramentos del
Bautismo, la Confirmación y la Eucaristía. También
tenemos que recordar que los pecadores sólo pueden
ser plenamente iniciados, por lo que, los niños no
confirmó ni recibir la Eucaristía.

Requiem for the Unborn at Cathedral.
All are invited to attend the Special Mass for all
those who have been deeply injured and those who
have died through “Legalized Abortion”. The Mass
is Saturday, Jan 19th at 6:00pm. A Rally will begin at
3:00pm on the lower Cathedral Plaza. For further

Parish Assembly
Monday January 14, 2013 at 7:00 pm
All parishioners are asked to attend the Parish Assembly on Monday Jan. 14th. The celebration includes the presentation of all groups, liturgical ministries and programs that meet here at St. Joseph. All
Parish Volunteers will be able to re-commitment to
Parish Service.
The STATE OF THE PARISH will be presented,
which will include the Spiritual, physical and financial state of the parish. We will have some time to
dream about the future during this “Year of Faith” as
well as have Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament
and have time to pray for all ministries in the New
Year. Please plan on attending the Parish Assembly
Monday Jan 14th at 7:00 PM in the church.
A Note From the Secretary…
Some of you may have been aware that Fr. Greg was
scheduled to have surgery on the 31st of December. He scheduled it on this date planning that it
would allow him to return to work on Thursday the
3rd of January since it was not a major procedure. He
had a hernia for the past two years and his doctor
thought it would be best to have the surgery
now. Unfortunately, his surgery was rescheduled to
the 3rd of January. For this reason his appointments
and masses were moved/reassigned with short notice. We apologize for the inconvenience it may have
caused. We are now happy to report that the surgery
went well and he is back to full speed.

Una Nota de la Secretaria…
Algunos de ustedes se habrán dado cuenta de que el
P. Greg estaba programado para someterse a una
operación el 31 de diciembre. El la programo en esta
fecha planeando que le permitiría volver al trabajo el
jueves 3 de enero, ya que no era un procedimiento
mayor. Tenía una hernia los últimos dos años y su
médico pensó que sería mejor tener la cirugía ahora.
Desafortunadamente, su cirugía fue reprogramada
para el día 3 de enero. Por esta razón sus citas y las
misas se movieron/reasignaron con poco tiempo de
aviso. Pedimos disculpas por las molestias que haya
podido causar. Ahora estamos felices de informar
que la cirugía salió bien y él está de regreso a toda
velocidad.

La Escuela De San José Eleva las Normas
St. Joseph School Raises the Standards
In two weeks, we’ll begin our annual observance of Catholic Schools Week, when we
celebrate the high standards Catholic education instills in our students and the value it
adds to our community. On Sunday, January
27th, we will celebrate St. Joseph School Alumni during the 10:45am Mass. The mass will be followed by
an Alumni Reception and Open House. See next
week’s bulletin for the schedule of more events.

On this Epiphany Sunday of the Lord, the
participants of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) are returning from
Christmas Break. The Catechumens (those
who are seeking Baptism and Full Communion into the Roman Catholic Church)
will be presented and introduced to the Assembly. The
process of the RCIA is one of conversion. Baptized persons who need Confirmation and/or First Communion
are also welcome. We meet on Sunday mornings at 8:30
a.m. in the Parish Center; the sessions are dismissed at
noon.
January Sessions are the 13th, 20th and 27th.
Please bring Birth Certificates, or any other certificates
relating to sacraments or marriages. You may obtain
further information regarding our ongoing process by

intent can be frightening, especially to young children. The ASPCA website provides parents with

from an overexcited pet by demonstrating the basics of dog bite prevention, such as rolling into a
ball, protecting hands and face and calling for
help, rather than running or screaming if chased

Diaconate Formation Office: Information Meeting for Men Interested in the Permanent Diaconate,
Sunday, January 20, 2013, in Inglewood
The Diaconate Formation Office will be hosting an information meeting for all men who are interested in finding out more about becoming a permanent deacon in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Members of the Archdiocesan Diaconate Formation Office will be present to explain the role of the deacon in the Church, to explain the diaconate formation program, and to answer any questions that participants might have. Men must

St. Joseph Church as the place to celebrate your marriage. Preparation takes approximately 6 months. To
begin the process it is necessary that the couple attend an information night. This meeting takes place
in our parish office once a month and is always the
second Monday of each month at 7:00 in the evening.
