En el marco de la Ceremonia de Entrega de Certificados de la Universidad
de Cambridge, el BRITÁNICO otorgó once Becas a la Excelencia. Los becados
Allison Polo, César Portocarrero, Marco Portocarrero, David Toranzo, Jorge
Chero, Marion Fernández, Óscar Cerna, René Quispe, Richard Nole, Sandra
Arroyo y Xiomara Rojas tendrán la oportunidad de viajar a Londres, por un
mes, con todos los gastos pagados, para complementar su aprendizaje del
inglés en una prestigiosa escuela de idiomas.
El evento contó con la presencia del Ing. Juan Lira, presidente del Consejo

When I arrived at Heathrow Airport, I couldn’t believe I was in London. The
streets, the people, the underground all come together to create a world
completely different to what we are all used to here in Lima. Forget about
the silly stereotypes of cold and rude English people and cold weather;
London is very different to what you see in films. It was truly amazing living
in London and studying at International House; it has all been one of the
most incredible experiences I have had in my life. I got to meet people from
all over the world and it was great walking around the city all day long
talking, laughing, joking, etc. I just want to thank the BRITÁNICO for thiss
amazing opportunity to get to know another culture. All I have to say is thatt
I can’t wait to be back in London.

The time of my life

I was looking through the window of the plane, wondering what awaited me during
the next month. I had pictured London in my mind many times, but it was totally
different from what I had thought, it was a hundred times better. Every single day is a
new adventure there, full of breathtaking moments. You feel everything can happen
in this city because
there is so much to do and so many different people to

En el viaje del aeropuerto a la casa donde me iba a hospedar, muchas cosas pasaban
por mi mente: cómo será mi landlady, cómo serían las clases, cómo me iba a movilizar
de un lado a otro, etc., pero una vez que llegué a la casa y conocí a Annie y Peter,
mis hosts, me sentí tranquila porque me hacían sentir como si estuviera en mi casa.
Las clases eran de lo mejor, conocía a gente de distintos países y mis profesores
eran muy dinámicos y competentes. Si de transporte hablamos, era de lo más fácil;
únicamente necesitaba mi oyster card y podía ir a todos lados, solo tenías que saber
a dónde querías ir y qué line del underground o número de bus debías tomar.

Debo contarles que los mejores lugares, los no muy conocidos ni visitados por los
turistas porque eran pequeños sitios que pasan desapercibidos, los conocí caminando.
Londres es una ciudad muy linda y yo creo que para conocerla no hay mejor manera
que caminando por sus calles. Todos los días salía de International House y me iba a
caminar a donde mis pies me llevaran, leía los mapas en las esquinas para tener una
noción de dónde estaba y si veía un lugar que quería conocer me dirigía hacia él. De
esta forma, conocí Soho Square, calles con pequeñas tiendas en ambos lados, otra
donde había puras tiendas de libros (el paraíso para mí) y muchos otros lugares;
claro que también visité los más turísticos, como la Torre de Londres, el London
Eye, el Palacio de Buckingham, Camden Town con sus excéntricos personajes, etc.;
pero esos pequeños lugares son los que hicieron la diferencia para mí. Los fines de
semana los pasaba fuera de Londres, viajando a otros lugares como: Edimburgo, de
Marble Arch, Londres.
la cual me enamoré, una pequeña ciudad, pero con mucho para ofrecer, como sus
paseos de noche por lugares supuestamente embrujados o su castillo con una vista
odas casi iguales con el mismo tipo
impresionante de toda la ciudad; Bath, con sus baños termales y sus casas que lucían todas
de arquitectura, pero muy lindas; Leeds Castle era como entrar en un castillo de cuentos de hadas con todo y un laberinto y una
gruta; si te gusta la arquitectura como a mí, no te puedes perder la catedral de Canterbury… ese día terminé con un dolor terrible
en el cuello de tanto mirar hacia arriba para poder apreciar tantos detalles como podía; y cómo olvidarme del castillo de Windsor,
y la ciudad de Oxford y todas sus escuelas.
Todo esto se lo debo al BRITÁNICO, gracias por esta gran oportunidad que me dieron y hacerme dar cuenta de que todo el esfuerzo
que puse en mis estudios fue recompensado de una gran forma. Nunca voy a olvidar este viaje y sé que voy a volver porque me
queda mucho más por conocer.

Mis días en el BRITÁNICO


Cuando mi mamá
me matriculó en el
verano del 2005, no
sabía qué esperar
del
BRITÁNICO;
había
escuchado
muchas cosas y
ansiaba saber cómo me iría.
Han pasado prácticamente cinco años
desde esa fecha, y hoy puedo decir que
mi experiencia por esta gran institución
ha sido una de las más productivas,
placenteras y fructíferas de mi vida.
Cuando este pasado 23 de junio
anunciaban a los ganadores de la Beca
a la Excelencia, estaba más que nerviosa
porque mi futuro podía cambiar en unas
cuantas palabras; y cuando proclamaron
que los once postulantes nos íbamos a
Reino Unido, sentí muchas cosas, pero
las que quisiera resaltar son: orgullo,
felicidad y gratitud.
Tengo que agradecer a Dios, por
haberme dado la vida y la oportunidad
de demostrar lo que soy capaz de hacer;
a mis padres, por haberme apoyado e
impulsado a ser una buena estudiante
y una mejor persona; a mis maestros,
quienes me exigieron y motivaron
en todos estos años; y finalmente al
BRITÁNICO, por darme la oportunidad
de pertenecer a esta gran familia y viajar
a este otro extraño y nuevo mundo. Solo
me queda decir: “THANKS BRITÁNICO!”.

my first day at

BRITÁNICO.
I was eight and
really nervous, but
when I entered the
classroom and the
class started, I knew
this was the beginning of an adventure.
Here I am eight years later and I am
really grateful to the BRITÁNICO for
giving me the opportunity to take the
FCE and to continue the adventure I
started, this time in London, and I must
say the idea makes me blissfully happy.
I want to thank my teachers from Kids
1 to Advanced 6 for giving me the tools
and the motivation to achieve my goals
and it is because of them, my family and
the BRITÁNICO that I am writing here.
The BRITÁNICO was the
perfect choice…

I never thought
studying
English
would be necessary
for me. I already
knew it, it had
always been part
of my life through
music, internet, videogames, films,
etc. What I knew was enough. But at
some point I started to think bigger.
I wanted to go abroad, to go to gigs
and festivals and to sing along with my
favourite bands, so I needed to speak it
as perfectly as possible, and that’s why
I considered starting a course at the
BRITÁNICO. There was no second option
as I have always been fascinated by the
UK since I got into its music scene, so
the BRITÁNICO was the perfect choice.
What I never thought was that this
place would give me the opportunity
of fulfilling something I had desired for
years: experiencing England in real life.
I thought it would only happen after
working non-stop and saving lots of
money. Now it’s a reality, and this is just
the start.
Infinite thanks to God, the BRITÁNICO
and all my teachers, specially the ones
who remember who I am while reading
this.

I started studying
at the BRITÁNICO
back
in
2009,
hoping to finish
my courses as soon
as possible and
get my certificate.
However, I found out that there were
still lots of things I had to learn. After
a while, I realized that studying English
wasn’t as hard as I thought as I could
meet and make new friends and classes
were very entertaining, so time passed
by really fast. When I finish all my cycles
I decided to take the FCE exam and got
an A, which made me really proud.
When I learned I could win a trip to the
UK, I got really excited.
Finally, at the ceremony, I could not
believe it when I heard that all those of
us who met the requirements had won
the scholarship to London and I just
stood speechless for a few seconds. So I
would really like to thank the BRITÁNICO
for this amazing opportunity and all my
teachers who I know do their best every
day to help us, the students, do ours.
A Waste of Time? I

How could anyone
convince
himself
that all the effort
put in to learning
something
have
worked out for the
best? Well, I had to
convince myself of this while walking
to the stage to receive my diploma. In
those very seconds, only one thought
was passing through my mind: every
hour of study I spent during my four
years at BRITÁNICO was totally worth it.
Yes, I knew I would eventually appreciate
English and use it appropriately.
However, in the end, I not only started to
speak and write better in the exams, but
English turned to be such an important
thing in my life that I had to make room
Is it for real? For real?


If you had been
able to see me in
my first class at
the BRITÁNICO you
would
probably
have said, “That kid
seems pretty lost; I
hope he knows that
nothing will change even if he stares
at the roof for hours.” Nevertheless, I
gradually began to understand every
single word anyone spoke in my class,
I improved my pronunciation and I
developed an ability that eradicated
any kind of shame I felt while speaking
English. That is the reason why I would
like to express my gratitude towards
the teachers at the BRITÁNICO who
tolerated my sometimes inappropriate
comments in class. I would also like to
thank the association for having made
possible one of my dreams, travelling
to Europe, which is something I have
simply longed for all my life. Finally,
special thanks to my advanced teacher
Giovanni Quiroz who taught me the
respectful yet “cool” British accent.
The BRITÁNICO’S Role

I remember that
the day I asked my
mum, about 4 years
ago, if I was going
to study English,
like my brothers
did, was the day
I registered at the BRITÁNICO. In the
following years I learnt how to function
in a completely different language, not
only speaking but reading and even
singing too.
It is great how you learn different
language skills without noticing it and it
is even greater how patient teachers are
– when you are at the back making jokes
with your friends. I can not be anything
but grateful to them, for helping me
improve my English so much. When I
was told I met the requirements to get
the scholarship I got really excited and
nervous, and when it was announced
that the 11 of us got the scholarship, it
was a total delight.
I want to say, “THANK YOU, BRITÁNICO,
for this opportunity.” And to all the
people willing to take the FCE, “Good
Luck, you could be the next winner of
the scholarship!”

First of all, I’d like
to say thanks to the
BRITÁNICO for this
once-in-a-lifetime
o p p o r t u n i t y.
Travelling
to
England has always
been one of my ambitions and winning
this scholarship was one of my aims.
So, when I was told I was one of the
students who met the requirements, I
was thrilled to bits.
I can still remember
my first English
class
at
the
BRITÁNICO. I was in
Junior 5 and I was
kind of nervous,
but then, when
the lesson started,
that sensation vanished quickly because
of the dynamic and friendly teacher.
What’s more, I made new friends pretty
soon.
Looking back, I can undoubtedly say
that studying at the BRITÁNICO has
been a great experience. I not only
learnt English but also made good
friends and discovered little by little how
wonderful British culture is. Needless to
say, finishing Advanced 6 made me feel
quite nostalgic.
In those days, I used to read the
articles written by the winners of the
scholarship in the BRITÁNICO News.
I never imagined myself writing one
of those articles someday. For me, it
seemed an impossible achievement.
Now, I’m so excited about such an
incredible prize. When, while standing
on the stage, I heard that every
candidate had won, I couldn’t hide my
surprise and happiness. I didn’t believe
it until I pinched myself and - wow!! - it
wasn’t a dream.


Finally, looking ahead, I’m fairly sure
that going to London will be a lifechanging experience, that’s why I’d
like to thank my parents and all of my
teachers because without their support
I wouldn’t have been able to get an A
in the FCE.


be walking down the streets of London.
Studying at the BRITÁNICO has been an awesome experience. Of course, at first, I didn’t enjoy waking up early
every Saturday to go and study English, but then I started to get used to it and had a lot of fun. When I heard
about the scholarship, I made it my priority and goal to get it and after a lot of hard work I was able to do so.

El 25 de junio, en el auditorio del colegio San Agustín, se
llevó a cabo el VIII Festival Cultural BRITÁNICO (FCB), con
la animación de Daniel Marquina de Mañana maldita y la
asistencia de estudiantes y profesores. Se pudieron apreciar
números de: magia, grupos de rock, cantantes solistas, entre
otros. Todos los asistentes gozaron de música, danza y teatro.

representantes de Fundades, quienes con un divertido Ludo,
les dieron tips para reciclar, jugando.

Visita de Scotty a Camacho
Scotty, la mascota de la marca de papeles higiénicos Suave,
en coordinación con Fundades, se paseó por los salones del
BRITÁNICO Camacho, donde recibió el cariño de los más
pequeños.
El programa “El nuevo papel de la solidaridad” se inicia desde
abril de 2006 hasta fines de 2008. A partir de esta fecha
se le dio un nuevo rostro a la campaña, denominándola
“Recíclame, cumple tu papel”, la cual continúa trabajando en
alianza con la empresa Kimberly Clark S.R.L. y con el apoyo
de 385 empresas y 85 centros educativos, que practican
la responsabilidad social. Al mes de junio del 2011 se han
acopiado 4.228,57 toneladas de papel y otorgado 3.666
becas educativas.

Malditamerican Pidol
La 9ª. temporada del Malditamerican Pidol, organizado por el programa Mañana Maldita, de Radio Planeta, se llevó a cabo en
nuestro auditorio del BRITÁNICO Surco. El jurado estuvo compuesto por la cantante Shantall Young Oneto, Jeremy Castillo, del
grupo Emergency Blanket y Augusto “Papopa” Robles, representante de Mañana Maldita. Luego de una difícil decisión, se eligió
como ganadora a Olenka Herrera, quien además estudia con nosotros. Olenka ganó un iPod Touch, gracias al BRITÁNICO.


En primer lugar, me siento realmente feliz y
emocionada porque nunca esperé verme en
alguna edición del BRITÁNICO News.
Yo ya había participado antes en el
Malditamerican Pidol y llegué a la final también,
pero no logré el primer puesto, así que decidí
intentarlo otra vez con mente positiva, y con
la experiencia pasada me sentía más confiada
y preparada. Yo escogí primero los siguientes

Mi artista favorito es Kurt Cobain, exvocalista de la
banda Nirvana; y mi modelo a seguir es mi madre, por
supuesto.
La sensación que tienes cuando te dicen que ganaste
no se puede describir, es alegría y miedo porque no
te lo crees. Aún sigo creyendo que despertaré una
mañana para volver a concursar y lo haría si pudiera, es
una de las satisfacciones más grandes que haya podido
experimentar. Por primera vez siento orgullo por algo
que conseguí con esfuerzo propio y espero que algún
día haya más personas orgullosas de mí.

Nuevo texto para el programa Kids
Con motivo del lanzamiento de la serie Smart Class de MM Publications para el programa de Kids, su
autora, Sra. Helen Moutsou, y el Sr. Kostas Pexos, consultor académico de la editorial, llegaron a Lima
para entrenar a los profesores del BRITÁNICO en el manejo de los diversos componentes de la serie.
Las sesiones se llevaron a cabo en los auditorios de Surco y San Miguel, con la asistencia de 180
profesores y staff de centro.

El BRITÁNICO organizó una fiesta para todos sus colaboradores de Caja, Recepción y Call Centre, en el hotel Sonesta de San Isidro.
Los agasajados gozaron de una noche muy grata y divertida.

¿Soy teacher (or am I not?)
Reflexiones en el Día del Maestro

Carlos Castillo, Profesor del BRITÁNICO San Isidro
Una pregunta recurrente en mi círculo social y académico
es: “¿Por qué decidiste ser profesor?”. Pregunta incómoda
hace años, ahora no puedo evitar cierto placer culpable
al ver el rostro sorprendido de mis interlocutores cuando
respondo con despreocupación: “Honestamente, no lo sé con
certeza”. Y es que, efectivamente, dilucidar una razón o un
momento determinado de cuándo, cómo y por qué opté por
la educación en mi geografía personal me resulta difícil. Hace
unos días, producto de una serie de vivencias felices, decidí
meditar la pregunta con pinzas y lupas, cuando de repente
encontré una nota de mi papá en uno de mis libros favoritos:
“Hijo, que tengas un feliz 2007”; unas páginas más adelante
una nota de mamá: “Carlitos, vine a visitarte pero no te
encontré, cuídate y ya nos vemos pronto”. Notas de este tipo
tengo muchas. “¿Por qué?”, me cuestioné. “¿A qué se debe
tanto amor, tanto interés incansable?”. Fue así como empecé
a esbozar una respuesta a la gran interrogante. ¿Por qué
decidí ser profesor?, asumo en parte por gratitud, el haber
tenido muchos mentores espirituales y una educación casi
privilegiada en mi infancia genera en mí un compromiso ético
y social de querer compartir lo vivido y observado, de ponerlo
en práctica, de maximizarlo y mejorarlo. En tiempos en los
que lo automatizado nos rodea y nos arrebata la creatividad
y la independencia, bien vale una voz discordante presta a
cuestionar, a provocar; de la discusión y la confrontación sana
se generan nuevas y mejores verdades, y quizá he ahí una de
las diferencias entre la fosilización y la evolución.
En todos estos años trabajando en el BRITÁNICO he
observado una constante ascendente: cada día hay más
profesores con los CAE y CPE de Cambridge; cada año hay
más profesores que se someten a la presión de un curso de
entrenamiento que requiere no sólo de conocimiento sino
también de mucha actitud positiva, como el ICELT. Observo a
mis colegas hablando de ustedes, los alumnos, recordándolos
y preguntándose “¿cómo estará?, ¿habrá mejorado?, ¿me
habrá escuchado?”. En cierta manera son el mismo amor e
interés sembrados en las notas de mis papás en algunos de
mis viejos libros favoritos.
No puedo encontrar en mi historia los orígenes exactos de
mi vocación pedagógica, pero sí tengo muy claro el trabajo
que hacemos y no es tan romántico como la imagen que
muestra el cine o la literatura. Trabajar en un aula implica
confrontar, debatir, observar y disponer de mucha paciencia,
algunas veces estoica, pero siempre en beneficio de ustedes,
los alumnos. Aprovecho esta sinopsis para destruir de una
buena vez aquel mito de “si hablas inglés, entonces puedes
enseñarlo”; desafortunada falacia, pues “enseñar” requiere,
aparte de conocimiento, muchísima inteligencia emocional y
cualidades de liderazgo que no son gratuitas sino más bien
resultado de estudio, vivencias y reflexión constante.
En la novela Siddhartha de Hermann Hesse, el personaje
principal se embarca en un viaje de descubrimiento interior
que le toma toda la vida. Probablemente dentro de muchos
años, cuando sea ya un hombre viejo y cansado físicamente,
pero rico en memorias y aprendizaje, tendré una respuesta
definitiva. Por ahora, es que siento que el trabajo que realizo
es bueno, pero que mañana será mejor, porque tiene que ser
mejor, porque no creo si no sé que puedo hacerlo mejor.
La frase “Make your lives extraordinary”, del maestro John
Keating, interpretado por Robin Williams en ese maravilloso
y duro filme que es La sociedad de los poetas muertos, quizá
resuma mi experiencia en “este oficio misterioso”, como
solía llamarlo el eterno Constantino Carvallo. Los profesores
tratamos de dar lo mejor de nosotros cada día, y también
cometemos errores propios de la fragilidad del ser humano,
pero soy testigo del inmenso amor

hacer parte de tu vida un momento extraordinario”.

Nohelia Navarrete, Pueblo Libre Teacher
How many theme parks are there in sunny California? Why is
the Taj Majal known as a love symbol? What sports can you
practise in the dreamlike Canary Islands? How did ancient
men build mega-constructions such as the Pyramids and the
Coliseum? All these questions were given an answer in the
project called “Places to see in your lifetime”.
This project, which aimed to help us practise grammar and
vocabulary learnt in a previous lesson, proved to be so much
more. Students got engaged in the activity and shared their
outstanding work with pictures and interesting facts in class.
More than by the beautiful places my students presented,
I was amazed by their great initiative and flawless work.
I would like to thank my I2 students for their enthusiastic
participation and for that fabulous tour around the world
and history that made our Saturday extremely lively and
interesting.

International Language:
Music!


What sort of music do teenagers listen to nowadays? Some
people might think artists such as The Jonas Brothers, Miley
Cyrus or Justin Bieber - whose music is in fact one of my phone
ringtones - are all we will find on their playlists. Well, you will
be surprised - as I was - to know that my Junior 12 students
also chose bands like Led Zepellin and Red Hot Chilli peppers
for a project called “Our Music Stars”. We spent 30 minutes
sharing pictures, information and songs of our favourite
stars and we learnt about music as much as we learnt about
group work and healthy competition. Most people think of
English as the only international language. However, through
English my students also had an enjoyable chance to share
the international language of music.

destinations my J5 students chose as their favourites. By using
eye-catching slides, they talked about their capital cities,
population, weather, famous people, legends and the fun
activities you can try there!

100 Places to See… Before
the Bell Rings
They certainly proved they had no trouble searching on the net
and finding out about witches’ legends or what the cities are like,
which really drew everybody’s attention. They also recommended
canoeing, swimming and bungee-jumping!!
Last but not least, group work was certainly a good way for my
students to learn to compromise and to have the opportunity to
be heard.
Thanks for all your enthusiasm and participation. As usual, you
exceeded my expectations. Congratulations J5.
Un divertido Open Day

Singing Time with
PLAYWAY is Really Fun!

El último sábado del mes de junio el Infants 8 organizó un
Open Day en el que los papitos pudieron apreciar cómo su
niño aprende inglés jugando al ritmo de Cheeky Monkey. Por
medio de canciones y juegos demostraron conocer las partes
de la casa, que luego plasmaron juntos en didácticas casitas
de papel. Fue una experiencia única e inolvidable que tanto
mi helper Karina como yo guardaremos en nuestro corazón.


One of the class activities children find really enjoyable is
singing songs. As teachers, we all know that using songs
in our class provides examples of authentic, memorable
and rhythmic language, grammar and cultural aspects of
the English language and that is fun for the students. The
songs provided in the PLAYWAY books include these features
as well as lots of enjoyable speaking, listening, vocabulary
and language practice. While children dance to the music,
jump, move and sing the lyrics, we can see how the relaxed
atmosphere these songs create exposes our children to
progressively mastering the English language without their
realizing, just by having fun. Isn’t that great?
