THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ January
THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ January 26, 2014 MADISON’S DOWNTOWN CATHOLIC COMMUNITY ABOUT OUR PARISH SAINT PATRICK The Cathedral Parish of St. Raphael was formed on July 1, 2008 by the merger of three historic parishes located within a few blocks of the Capitol Square. 404 E. Main St. The buildings of two of those historic parishes – Holy Redeemer and St. Patrick – provide the current facilities for the Cathedral Parish. Mass is offered every day in both churches. The parish rectory is at the Holy Redeemer site, while the offices are at the St. Patrick location. HOLY REDEEMER 120 W. Johnson St. Old St. Raphael Cathedral was destroyed by arson in 2005. Bishop Morlino has announced his intention to erect a new cathedral on the same site (at West Main and Fairchild). In the meantime, an outdoor Way of the Cross is located there. ST. Beginning in February, small groups of 6-12 people each will begin meeting monthly in peoples' homes to discuss Forming Intentional Disciples, a book aimed at helping Catholics grow as disciples of Jesus who, in turn, invite others to follow Jesus. Different groups will meet in various locations in the Madison area as well as on different days of the week and times; hopefully one of the groups will work for you! Page 3 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time January 26, 2014 CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK In observance of Catholic Schools Week, which begins today, we have a guest column from Fr. John Silva at Immaculate Heart of Mary in Monona. Among our local parochial schools, Immaculate Heart is the only one that offers families from outside that parish the same tuition rate as parishioners. Dear Friends in Christ: I was thinking back to my own personal experience with Catholic Schools as a young child. I truly feel blessed by the example that my teachers demonstrated to me of the importance of being close to the Catholic Church. And, I think it was significant that my teachers taught me that lesson aside from just learning it from my parents. Although it’s essential for parents to be the domestic church and instill the foundation of faith and love of Christ into their children, there is something powerful about those lessons being reinforced at their school. It shows the child that what the parents are instructing them lives elsewhere, and it also allows the children a vehicle to express their faith in their religious classes, as they celebrate the Sacraments, and are able to pray with their peers. Our faith is fully alive at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic school in Monona because children are able to learn about God through the Catechism curriculum. Unlike a public school, learning about God and talking about God is not only allowed, but sometimes encouraged. One of the most important lessons I learned while at Catholic school is that God is in charge of our lives. Even more so, I learned that God loves us every moment of our lives. The more I learned about God in school, the more I realized how very much he loves me. Attending Catholic schools helps to build a foundation of faith at an early age so that it becomes a part of your core self. I believe that anything worth doing comes with a cost – whether it’s your time or your money. In my opinion, Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic School is worth the cost because God is truly the center. It doesn’t much matter if you learn how to read, write, and do math if you don’t learn about God and His purpose for our lives we will lack true joy. I want to personally invite you to come and visit Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic School and meet our wonderful principal Mrs. Mary Bartsch, the faculty, and staff during Catholic School Week Open House on January 26 from 11:15 a.m. to 1:00 p .m.
