Dear Parishioners, How often do we ever meditate on the eighth
ST. JEROME CATHOLIC CHURCH / IGLESIA CATOLICA SAN JERONIMO HOUSTON, TEXAS SUNDAY, MAY 3, 2015 DOMINGO 3 DE MAYO DEL 2015 LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR "Never forget, young friends: The Virgin Mary is our Mother and with her help we can remain faithful to Christ." ~ Pope Francis Dear Parishioners, How often do we ever meditate on the eighth commandment? One area of life where it is hard to walk the walk is covered by the eighth commandment: "thou shalt not bear false witness," or “don’t lie.” This commandment refers in the first place to truthfulness. When we use the gift of language to deceive other people, we put ourselves on the devil's team: he deceived Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, and his lie opened the door to evil and suffering in the world. It is hard enough for us to avoid lying, to be committed to telling the truth when duty demands that we speak. But the commandment also includes other, even more uncomfortable behaviors. It forbids gossip and talebearing - in other words, talking behind peoples' backs, or listening while others do so. It forbids detraction or defamation - in other words, spreading news about other people's faults, sins, or failures, or listening while others do so. Imagine how different our popular culture would be if even just half of our journalists followed the eighth commandment. Imagine how different our work places and family gatherings would be if we didn't have to worry about what people were saying behind our backs. Words are powerful things. They can build up community, when we use them to speak well of others and to communicate truthfully and positively. Or they can destroy reputations, tear apart families, and even start wars. As followers of Christ, we should strive to be shining examples in this area, using words as Jesus would have us, to spread light and not darkness, to build bridges and not walls. In a few moments Jesus will renew his commitment to us in the sacrifice of this Holy Mass. When he does, let's ask him to help us walk the Catholic walk this week, so that we can experience the joy of being mirrors of God's goodness in this confused and darkened world. Everyone is given unique gifts. Many people are able to recognize their talents and abilities, but there are many people who are unsure of their gifts. This may make them feel worthless. If you know someone who is struggling for a direction in life, give them a little encouragement. Help them discern how they might use their skills. Fr Dan P.S. It is May and DSF has only 737 contributors by name (that is not anonymous in a 2nd collection), but we are not yet 50% of our goal for the year: $116.00. We are still $37,000.00 short in pledges for this year. If you have been putting it off, then please step up now with your pledge. Jesus says, “I solemnly assure you, the man who has faith in me will do the works I do…” We have an obligation to strive to achieve this faith that will allow us to do the works and the will of Christ. How will I grow in faith? Dear God, Lord of the harvest, bless and guide those who preach the Gospel and carry on the work of Christ. Give them hearts that are generous and concerned. Send your Holy Spirit upon them, as you did with the Apostles at Pentecost, so that your grace of light and courage will inspire them. Strengthen them in weakness and comfort them in trials and direct them in their work of telling others of the love of Jesus. Open the hearts of SAY YES!! Please put $5. more per week in the collection or if you just can’t, at least $1. HELP YOUR PARISH! Thank you very much for your generosity. the heavens to receive the message of your good news. Help them to save souls for you. Let your love lead them and heal the hearts of those they help. Let the joy of Jesus be with them and with your people whom they serve. O God, may your kingdom come, when all will acknowledge you and humbly love you and serve you by following your Son. Amen. (Fr. MÁS POR SEMANA. ¡DONA $5 SI PUEDES! TU IGLESIA SAN JERÓNIMO NECESITA DE TU AYUDA. ¡DI QUE SI! ¡MUCHAS GRACIAS!
