A Message from our Pastor On March 13, 2015, the second anniversary of his election as Successor of Peter, Pope Francis announced the Extraordinary Holy Year of Mercy. This is the first Holy Year to celebrate not an anniversary of some king, but the attribute of God the Father which is most exalted in both the Old and New Testaments: His Mercy. In the Bull of Indiction of the Jubilee called Misericordiae Vultus he said that the Year is to begin on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception (December 8th). Recently, at a meeting, I was told by Bishop DiMarzio that our parish, the Shrine Church of St. Gerard Majella, has been chosen as a Jubilee Church and a Church of Mercy for the Year. This is an extra special blessing for us and also a moment to pause and pray for the Mercy of God to come upon us. It also means that we will be a host to the many people of our Diocese who will visit our parish throughout this special year and pray for God’s blessing and receive a special blessing of Mercy. Part of the Tradition of a Jubilee Church is to have a “Holy Door”. This door is a door set aside for the year that pilgrims would walk though as special way to be welcomed into the Jubilee Church and receive the special blessing of the year. It is also a special sacramental symbol, like the Bishops Chair at his Cathedral and the station’s of the cross in every church, of the spiritual journey of mercy that Jesus invites all of us to undertake. Bishop Sanchez will be here on Sunday December 13, The Sunday of joy as it is Gaudete Sunday, to bless our Holy Door of Jubilee. As he does this, we will all be invited to be the 1st in the Diocese to walk though the door and into the church to receive the Blessings of God our Father. I encourage everyone to come to the Mass, and be part of the procession of Mercy on that day. God bless Fr Gannon. We know that enduring a difficult time will require some strenuous physical or emotional energy on our part before we experience the calm of normality. Our past experience tells us that we can endure the difficult pressure better when we know how long it will last and if we know that something better awaits us. Getting through the tough times while holding to the promise that awaits us is the message of this weekend’s readings. They point toward the promises of God’s kingdom that will come after the maelstroms and chaos of this world. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Eastern Christians developed very different traditions for confessing sin. They see the priest as a witness to God’s action, a physician, if you will, rather than a judge. A person confesses sin to God while standing in front of an icon of Jesus, face to face. Without a grill, in the full light of day, near a table with an open Gospel book, the penitent asks the Lord for mercy. A priest standing to the side might offer counsel and confirm God’s gift of forgiveness. Rather than list sins and offenses, an Eastern Christian is more likely to speak of a disposition of heart toward God and neighbor, and the desire to forgive those who have wronged them. Remarkably, although only a priest can pronounce the prayers of forgiveness, lay people, including married men and women, single Christians, monks, and nuns, may witness the confession. This is akin to the ancient Celtic practice of a “soul friend” as a spiritual mentor. Bishops may bless anyone with sufficient theological knowledge and discretion to do this. Eastern Catholics in the United States have largely drifted away from this tradition and toward Latin Rite customs such as confessional screens, set formulas and prayers, and penances. Today, in the interest of preserving the authentic tradition of the Eastern Church, there is a move to restore the older form. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. YOUTH NIGHT - GRADES 8 TO 12 MEETS EVERY FRIDAY NIGHT AT 7:30 TO 9 PM IN THE RECTORY: ST. JOSEPH CONF. RM. 4 INFO CALL: GILBERT RODRIGUEZ AT EXT 26 HOPE If you do not hope, you will not find what is beyond your hopes. —St. Clement THE FUTURE The future starts today, not tomorrow.
