Metagenomics and Environmental Microbiology
2011 Metagenomics and Environmental Microbiology SCOPE Microorganisms are responsible for the operation of the biogeochemical cycles which shape the environment’s biosphere and which are vital for the functioning of all ecosystems. Yet, microbes are the least understood of all organisms on Earth, since our ability to study and understand their metabolic potential has been hampered by our inability to generate pure cultures. The microbial metagenome is the most important source of genes in the biosphere and is responsible for maintaining the biogenic cycles. Consequently, the microbial metagenome is the most determinant of all the enzymatic reactions that take place on Earth. Almost 99% of all soil microbiota and nearly 99.9% of marine microorganisms are difficult to culture under laboratory conditions. As a result, the biotechnological potential of this important and basic source of knowledge for future technological applications remains unexplored and consequently unknown. This workshop aims at exploring the microbial diversity in different niches, thus undertaking the task of establishing the first global metagenomic map. Thus, this workshop represents a qualitative step-forward in the knowledge of bacterial populations in pristine and contaminated sites, to unveil the hidden potential of microbes for biotechnology, and to set up the basis for further indepth cutting-edge research. The meeting will bring together leading experts in the field of Microbial Ecology and Metagenomics, who have pioneered the field to develop molecular tools which opened new avenues to research microbes in the environment. FORMAT OF THE WORKSHOP The workshop will bring together 17 speakers and a maximum of 50 participants (including speakers). The scientific programme will start in the morning of monday, October 3rd, and will end on wednesday, October 5th. Ample time for informal discussion will be reserved. Participants will be invited to present a poster. ORGANIZED BY: Juan Luis Ramos. EEZ-CSIC, Granada, Spain Víctor de Lorenzo. CNB-CSIC, Madrid, Spain Dietmar Pieper.
