Ben / Nuestro Enfoque de la Fe con Padre Ben THE MONTH OF MAY: THE MONTH OF MARY II (HONORING OUR MOTHERS) The month of May is the month to honor our mothers in the different settings of their identity and mission. Motherhood is both a life giving and mission oriented vocation. To be motherless is to be without the basic nourishments that ensure a healthy growth, not only in the physical realm or in the socio-economic dimension of our lives but also in our spiritual lives and mental development. It is on this backdrop that we are grateful to God, who has granted us the favor of having our biological mothers and our ecclesial mother, our sublime spiritual and caring celestial mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary. In our journey of faith in this valley of tears, we are blessed with both the human and divine cares of our mothers. At birth, God generously gave us our biological mother whose relationship with us started when we were conceived in the womb, a relationship that expresses our deeper connection with God as indicated in the following biblical texts: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations” (Jeremiah 1: 4); “Thus says the Lord who made you, who formed you from the womb and will help you” (Isaiah 44:2); “For thou didst form my inward parts, thou did knit me together in my mother’s womb, I praise you for the wonder of my being” (Psalms 139: 13-15); “Thy hands fashioned and made me” (Job 10:8); “And when Elizabeth heard the greetings of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb” (Luke 1:41). In these biblical words, our connectedness with God is visible through the preserving love of our biological mothers, who accepted the pain of pregnancy so that a new life is generated and brought into existence. The mission of our biological mothers does not end with conception but continues in the different maternal cares that we receive from childhood to adulthood. It is said that the work of a mother does not end. Mothers accompany their children during the delicate periods of infancy and adolescence; they take care of any sick member of the family and are always available to support in any kind of good work. The Igbo people of Nigeria describe mothers as Nne, which signifies fruitfulness and life affirming vocation. Nneka, which is derived from Nne, demonstrates that mothers are supremely important. In the light of the above reflection, those who believe in God are said to have another mother, which is the Church. The mystical body of Christ is our spiritual mother. Pope John XXIII referred to the Church as Mater et Magister (Mother and Teacher). The Church is our mother that nourishes us with the Sacraments. The Catechism indicates that the Sacraments make the Church since they manifest and communicate to men, especially in the Eucharist, the mystery of communion with God who is love (CCC 1118). The Church as a mother takes care of the poor and the needy through the many charitable organizations and social apostolate that she generously undertakes in making God’s love known to all. As a teacher, the Church encourages us to know more about God and the spiritual life through the scriptures, traditions, magisterium, and age-long experiences and testimonies of the Saints. The Church also teaches us through the painful experiences of her children who are being killed in different parts of the world today and at all times. Our third and sublime mother is the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God (Theotokos), the Mother of Jesus (Mater Dei), and the Mother of the Church (Mater Ecclesiae). The Blessed Virgin Mary is the mother of all the Children of God, the New Eve. It is in the event of her maternal vocation that she had gloriously appeared in most countries of the world with a singular motive of inviting us to love Jesus from the Virgin of Guadalupe (1531) to the Lady of Lourdes (1858) and from the Lady of La Salette (1846) to the Virgin of Fatima (1917), from our Lady of Kibeho in Africa to our Lady of Medjugorje. All of Mary’s graces and privileges make up the jewel box that displays the pearl: Jesus Christ, our God. So, honoring Mary is honoring Jesus as I underlined in our last week reflection. As we celebrate the 2016 Mother’s Day, we are grateful to all our mothers here at Sacred Heart. Thanks so much for being there for your children (domestic family) and for your help to the Church (our big family). God Bless All Women of Sacred Heart, AMEN, AMEN. Fr. Popcak Sheltering the homeless: Putting in the thought, time and effort it takes to make your house a welcoming home by working to make it a beautiful, orderly, yet comfortable and hospitable place is a great way to remind yourself and your family of their dignity as children of God. Visit the Sick: When you respond to a sick child lovingly, refusing to treat him or her as a burden or an inconvenience even though the illness has thrown your schedule into chaos, you are practicing mercy, growing in personal holiness and showing your child his or her worth in God’s eyes and yours. Visit the imprisoned: To banish our children to their rooms or to timeout when they have committed some offense is one thing, but when we visit them a few minutes later, talk them through their error, teach them what to do instead and rebuild our relationship, we are practicing true mercy. Bury the Dead: Helping a child deal with sad transitions in life, whether due to the loss of a pet or favorite relative, or other events that can turn family life upside down, requires incredible compassion and sensitivityespecially when we are dealing with our own grief. The Corporal Works of Mommy and Daddy, remind us that charity truly does begin at home, and no better place to remind each other what we are worth in God’s eyes. This year’s topic was about Amoris Laetitia. Fr. Ben took the time to explain the joy of Love of Papa Francisco. This year as a community they took the time to sing to Fr. Ben a song called God loves you with Mario Alberto as a guest, and prayed as a community for Fr. Ben . This event is made with the intention of having a cup of coffee with our Pastor and making him feel Loved, taking time to thank him for all the efforts and hard work that he invests in the community, that is why Cristo Rey recognized his effort with this celebration inviting the Hispanic community to drink a cup of coffee with our dear Pastor Ben. We thank all the community for the support of Café Gratitude Page May 8, 2016 Este fin de semana pasado el Ministerio de Cristo Rey tuvo el placer de tener Café con Fe.
