My Beloved Brothers and Sisters,
On this 3rd Sunday of Lent, we come to celebrate a God who responds to our afflictions and
gives us time to repent. People ask: Why does God permit suffering? How can God allow
innocent people to suffer and die? Today’s world of instant news and social media make suffering graphically real. Natural disasters like hurricanes, tornados, earthquakes, famine, and
tsunamis leave behind devastation and often death. Worse is suffering intentionally inflicted
by human violence, racism, terrorism, and genocide to name but a few. Accidents constantly
inflict unanticipated, devastating, sometimes fatal suffering. Today’s Scripture finds a tower
collapse taking 18 innocent lives.
Lest anyone presume such tragedies to be God’s way of randomly punishing sinners, Jesus emphatically rejects
that interpretation twice using the words “By no means!” (Luke 13:3) Just as God tells Moses in our first reading
from Exodus that he has heard the cry of his people in their suffering and distress and will rescue them, God always hears the cry of people in distress and always responds. The Good News that Jesus reveals is that he is
God’s response to our need. In Jesus, God does not take away human suffering; God shares in it. Every parent
knows how impossible it is to take away a child’s pain. Like every parent, God our Father shares the suffering of
all his children. The death of his son Jesus guarantees this, and his resurrection points to the total destruction of
all suffering, all pain, all sorrow.
Finally, today’s Gospel tells us through the parable of the fig tree of a patient God who will give us yet one more
chance to repent and be fruitful. The gardener asks the man who planted the fig tree which has failed to bear fruit
for 3 years to “leave it for this year also, and I shall cultivate the ground around it and fertilize it; it may bear fruit
in the future” (Luke 13:8). There is a saying that goes something like “in God’s time, not ours”.
We don’t’ have to keep asking because God heard us the first time. I read a humorous story while preparing to
write this message to you which illustrate this last point. There was a man who bought a talking centipede from a
pet store and took it home. The following Sunday he asked the centipede 3 times if he would like to go to church
with him that day. The first 2 times, he got no response at all. On the 3rd time he got really close to the centipede’s
house, made from a box, and shouted “Hey in there! Would you like to go to church with me?!” From inside the
box came a small voice, “I heard you the first time! I was putting on my shoes!” God knows what we need and
when.

Kindness and mercy are what the enslaved people of Israel needed, and
they came in the form of deliverance. They came through a leader, Moses,
who was once plucked from the Nile River and was now herding his fatherin-law’s sheep in the land of Goshen. The bush that burned but was not
consumed shows us that God is inexhaustible mystery.
Moses’ awe and deference are mixed with a touching conversational
tone as he seeks to learn God’s name. And God sweetly responds. The
somewhat abstract “I AM” distinguishes the God of Abraham and Isaac and
Jacob from the minor gods in the territory who “are not.” They are helpless,
powerless, and useless. Moses is to step out into an amazing future, and
God will be there with outstretched arm. Just go and see, God seems to say.

Lent we are called to cultivate and fertilize our
spiritual lives through prayer, fasting and
almsgiving.

218 bags of food, in addition to inancial assistance with

Director of Apologetics at Catholic Answers
was a fallen-away Southern Baptist who as a
teen came back to faith in Christ through the
witness of televangelists. During his four-year
tour with the U.S. Marine Corps, he became
friends with a Marine well-versed in his Catholic Faith who challenged Tim to study Catholicism from Catholic and historical sources. That sparked a two-year search for
the truth. Immediately after his tour of duty, Tim attended Jimmy Swaggart Bible College and became a youth minister in an
Assembly of God community. He was determined to prove
Catholicism wrong, but he studied his way to the last place he
thought he would ever end up: the Catholic Church. He converted in 1988 and spent six years in formation for the priesthood, earning a degree in philosophy and studying theology at
the graduate level. Realizing that his calling was not to be a
priest, Tim left the seminary in 1994 and has been working in
Catholic apologetics and evangelization ever since.

The mission of the Isaac Society is to foster the introduction of volunteers to older people through group
social activities. Not everyone can just walk into a rest
home and start making friends, but if you have that
gift, we need you! Because the residents have a dif icult time staying up in the evening, we combine Bingo
with their Ice Cream Socials. We have a great time
assisting the elderly in this fun game. Our next social
is March 20th at 2:00 pm at Valencia Gardens. For

Pope Francis wants “Twenty-four Hours for the Lord,” around-the-clock availability of the sacrament of reconciliation, implemented worldwide this Friday and Saturday. Celebrated with his
oft-recommended “tenderness,” the sacrament is “a source of true interior peace,” says Francis, enabling people
“to touch the grandeur of God’s mercy with their own hands” (Misericordiae Vultus, 17). In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus
warns us against judging others. Focus instead, Jesus says, on deepening—or restoring—our own relationship
with God, for during this Lenten springtime that Master Gardener can use even life’s manure (the parable’s
“fertilizer”) to coax fresh fruit from a tree that seems hopelessly barren—us! Parishes preparing catechumens
may choose John’s Gospel, which likewise cautions against judging. Imagine what the Samaritan woman’s lifelong
neighbors thought of her multiple relationships. But by discovering Jesus, then sharing her good news—and
Jesus—with those very neighbors, she whom they had probably judged quite sinful became instead their
evangelist and “missionary of mercy.”

Our School Wants Your Children
Our parish school is ready to begin next year’s enrollment – would you like to join us? Our current students will register for
next year March 21st – 24th. After that, we begin filling out our classes from our waiting list. Do you have children you
would like to enroll in our parish school?
St. Catherine of Alexandria School is growing and almost full. Most of our parents will return their children next year, but a
few slots will emerge for new students in most grades. Our program is very successful with Standardized Test Scores showing us above average (and our faculty uses these as part of what improves our curriculum each year). Our Religion program
includes daily religious instruction, sacramental preparation, masses, confession, and parish involvement. Our music program is second to none in the Riverside area. Perhaps the greatest difference, however, is that our community has formed an
environment where our children can thrive. We have a ministry that truly develops the whole child, body, soul and spirit,
toward what Christ would want for them.
Now is the time to put their names on our waiting list. While we won’t know until March 24th how many slots will open,
most of our grades will have some openings this Fall. We do give priority to our parishioner families, but only to those who
sign up through the 24th of March – after that, we establish a second list while we test and determine placement for those
who asked for consideration prior to the end of regular registration. So call us soon and have your children join our educational ministry program!

El Papa Francisco quiere que 24 horas para el Señor, una iniciativa para ofrecer todo el dı́a el Sacramento de la Reconciliació n, se lleve a cabo en todo el mundo este viernes y sá bado. Celebrado con su frecuentemente
recomendada “ternura”, la Reconciliació n es “un recurso de verdadera paz interior” dice el Papa Francisco, “porque nos
permite experimentar en carne propia la grandeza de la misericordia” (Misericordiae Vultus, 17). En el Evangelio de
Lucas, Jesú s nos advierte de no juzgar a nuestros pró jimos. Al contrario, dice Jesú s, en profundizar o restaurar nuestra
propia relació n con Dios, para que durante esta Cuaresma primaveral el jardinero pueda usar el estié rcol de la vida (la
palabra que está en la pará bola es “fertilizar”) para inducir un fruto fresco de un á rbol que parece irremediablemente
esté ril —¡nosotros! Las parroquias preparando a catecú menos pueden elegir el Evangelio de Juan, el cual de la misma
manera advierte de no juzgar. Imagine lo que los vecinos de toda la vida de la mujer samaritana pensaron de sus varias
relaciones. Pero al descubrir a Jesú s, tambié n compartieron su Buena Nueva —y tambié n a Jesú s— con esos mismos
vecinos; ella, quien muy probablemente fue juzgada muy pecadora, en su lugar se convirtió en su evangelizadora y
“misionera de la misericordia”.
