La luminosidad y viveza del algodón convertido en hilo colorean la tienda del Museo Textil de Oaxaca gracias a Abigail Mendoza, artista
representante de un taller familiar dedicado a la elaboración de textiles selectos, únicos y diferentes, que sin embargo, continúan la tradición
de Santo Tomás Jalieza, Oaxaca. Esta comunidad, ordenada y tranquila, ofrece al visitante el encanto de presenciar muchas manos trabajando

Abigail aprendió a tejer a los seis años de edad, una actividad que se ha heredado de generación en generación: “Comenzó como un juego, crecí en una
familia de tejedoras, donde se le dedica todo el amor y el esfuerzo al telar de
cintura, es algo que veo desde que tengo uso de razón. Todo es un proceso,
primero aprendí algo muy sencillo y después algo más complicado. Mi mamá
y mi tía me enseñaron lo que hoy sé sobre tejer. Son las personas que más
admiro porque hacen los trabajos más finos que he visto.”
Los diseños que distinguen a los textiles de Jalieza son representaciones de la
vida en su entorno. Abigail recuerda que el danzante es la figura más representativa en su comunidad porque se cree que en el cerro más cercano, hay una
parte muy plana, donde bailaba Moctezuma. “Con los hilos también dibujamos venados, conejos, pollitos, una mujer con su canasto, grecas, alacranes,
culebras y los animales que tenemos alrededor”, nos recuerda.
Las tejedoras trabajan tanto piezas grandes, como diminutas y entre más pequeña
sea la pieza, mayor trabajo implica. Abigail, ganadora del galardón nacional del
primer concurso de textiles a nivel nacional cierra su testimonio con un mensaje:

The Museo Textil de Oaxaca gift shop, is filled with bright and vivid colors thanks to Abigail Mendoza, an artist who represents a family

workshop dedicated to the elaboration of very unique and different textiles, textiles that still follow the traditional way to elaborate them in
Santo Tomas Jalieza, Oaxaca. This community is very unique and it offers a very charming landscape.
The diversity of colors in the textiles of Santo Tomas Jalieza has many meanings
for them. Abigail explains that in order to obtain so fine and subtle textures
they must choose first of all the shades or colors: “We believe that the colors we
use represent our mood. When you are sad you choose opaque colors when you
are happy you choose bright colors.”

Abigail learned to weave when she was six years old, an activity that has
been inherited from generation to generation: “It all started as a game, I
grew up in a family full of weavers, in which they dedicate all the love and
effort to the back strap loom weaving, is something that I have always seen
since I can remember. Everything is a process, first I learned simple things
and step by step more complicated designs. My mom and my aunt taught
me what I know today about weaving. I admire them the most, because
they weave the finest textiles I have ever seen.”
The designs that distinguish Jalieza textiles are representations of their environment. Abigail recalls that the design call “the dancer” is the most representative figure in the community because they believe that in the closest
hill, there´s a platform, where Montezuma used to dance. “With the
threads we also draw deer, rabbits, chickens, and a woman with her basket,
frets, scorpions, snakes and the animals we have in our environment.
I am very proud of showing her beautiful work. Just like the threads in the
loom, everything must be placed with our own effort.”
They family makes both big and small pieces, the smaller the piece the more difficult
to make it is. Abigail, holder of the award of the first national textile contest in
Mexico closes this interview saying: “Weaving is something you born with, it´s a
family tradition that you inherit, it´s a work that gives me satisfactions every day.
