Mass Intentions & Memorial Candles
If you would like to have a Mass offered for a particular
Intention or for someone who has died, or if you would like to
dedicate a candle to an intention or a loved one, please call the
parish office. The stipend for the Mass is $10. The candles are
$30 for 1 month, $60 for 6 months, or $90 for one year. Our
office staff will help you find an open date and time for a Mass,
or available candles for dedications.
Misuse of the good. Is it not a common situation? By our neglect, the
good things that are placed in our hands are either abused or squandered.
We do not dutifully use the many things that we are provided with.
Don’t misuse and waste. Oh how I still remember how we strictly
observed the standing rule not to waste water and food. These were two of
the scarcest resources we had. As a rule, we needed to prepare the right
amount of food for everybody (members of the family of 9) and when
serving, we must be right: no one must exceed beyond what one needs.
Nobody leaves the table without finishing their plate.
I am not sure if we used our water-supply responsibly. I think we did. Oh
by the way, our water supply was painstakingly brought from a water
source about a half-mile distance from the house. We fill our water
containers with several trips of carrying on our shoulders small containers
of water hanging on both ends of a bamboo pole. Since we had just
enough water, we used the water only for cooking, dining and cleaning.
We do our laundry and we bathe in a natural well-spring. That would be about one (1)-mile walk from the
house.
Since it was hard work to get enough food and water, we really tried to use them well. Waste was
never permitted.
Consequently, when we have super-abundant amount of resources, generally, we are wasteful and
neglectful.
One of the good things that we misuse is God’s unwavering love. God’s love is super-abundant and
free. And since it is plenty and free, we abuse its use. We underuse it or we waste it.
The young heir did that. He squandered his inheritance in a life of dissipation.
A life of dissipation is a life lived in sin. While the grace of God is overflowing, we are supposed to
use them well: to walk in the path of Christ and to persevere in righteousness and holiness.

Mercifully treated. Since we sin, we are invited back to benefit the grace that continues to flow. It is
God’s desire that we get healed from our sinfulness.
God’s hospital is the church. Through the sacraments of healing: Confession and Anointing, we get
healed of our ailing body and soul. And through the sacrament of the Eucharist, we get nourished, making us
strong and courageous against our sinful inclinations.
God initiates the grace of healing. As we read from the Gospel, it is God who seeks those who are lost.
Ours is the heart to respond to God’s initiative of healing us.
God’s plan of healing us is accomplished through Christ. Christ is mediator. As Moses mediated for
Israel when God plan to inflict His wrath upon them, God relented and He forgave Israel.
The same forgiveness is provided for us through Christ who died for us. If we only know what grace
we receive through Christ, we will be filled with courage and strength and humility to take advantage of
God’s offer of healing.
El mal uso del bien. ¿No es una situación común? Por nuestra negligencia, en las cosas buenas que se
nos da o tenemos en nuestras manos ya sea que son maltratados o malgastados. Nosotros no usamos diligentemente las muchas cosas que nos proporcionan.
No hacer mal uso ni desperdiciar. Oh cómo recuerdo todavía la forma en que estrictamente seguía la
norma permanente de no desperdiciar el agua y ni los alimentos. Estos fueron dos de los recursos más escasos

a media milla de la casa. Llenábamos nuestros contenedores de agua haciendo varios viajes cargando sobre
nuestros hombros pequeños contenedores de agua que cuelgan en ambos extremos de una caña de bambú. Ya
que teníamos suficiente agua, solo se utilizaba el agua para cocinar, beber y limpiar. Lavábamos la ropa y nos
bañamos en un manantial natural. Que estaba alrededor de una (1) milla de la casa.
Ya que era un trabajo duro para conseguir suficiente comida y agua, asi que realmente tratábamos de
usarlos muy bien. Desperdiciar nunca estaba permitido.
En consecuencia, cuando tenemos en abundancia la cantidad de recursos, por lo general, son desperdiciados y negligentemente.

Una vida de disipación es una vida vivida en el pecado. Mientras que la gracia de Dios se desborda,

El hospital de Dios es la iglesia. A través de los sacramentos de Sanción: Confesión y Unción, es que
es sanado nuestro cuerpo y alma enferma. Y a través del sacramento de la Eucaristía, somos nutridos, haciéndonos fuertes y valientes en contra de nuestras inclinaciones pecaminosas.
Dios inicia la gracia de la curación. Como leemos en el Evangelio, es Dios quien busca a aquellos que
están perdidos. Y nosotros debemos tener la iniciativa de responder con el corazón a la sanción de Dios.
El Plan de la Sanción Dios para nosotros se lleva a cabo por medio de Cristo. Cristo es el mediador.
Como Moisés era mediador entre Israel el plan de Dios para infligir su ira sobre ellos, Dios cedió y perdonó
Israel.
El mismo perdón que se nos ha dado por medio de Cristo quien murió por nosotros. Si tan sólo
entendiéramos y nos diésemos cuenta de la gracia que recibimos por medio de Cristo, estaríamos llenos de
valor, y la fuerza y la humildad para aprovechar la sanidad que Dios nos ofrece.

Prayer Shawl Ministry
Prayer Shawl Ministry will be on Monday, Sept. 12 at 9:00am to 11:00am in the basement of the Lady of
Guadalupe House. These meetings are open to anyone that is interested in the work of the ministry which
is to provide comfort and healing through prayer with the giving of a prayer shawl. Prayer Shawl began in
2004 at St. Mary's with a small group of dedicated ladies and has grown with an active participation of over
40 individuals. There are no requirements other than a desire to offer the work of your hands and prayers for
the benefit of those in need. Prayer Shawls are available in the Gathering Space located in an unlocked
display cabinet near the window area. Extra shawls are kept in an unlocked closet located near the water
fountain in the vestibule. There is no charge for any prayer shawl whether it is given to a parish member, or
any other individual without regard to their location or their religious belief. Our shawls have been sent over
the globe to the waiting shoulders of those we love even though they may the be unknown to us - our fellow
Christian brother and sisters. These are works of love for which there can be no price. If you would like

In observance of the National Patriot Day, a day to remember the fallen and the heroes of 9/11, this
essay from Fr. James Martin is chosen for our reading. This essay is lifted from the USCCB page.
THE PARABLE OF GROUND ZERO
On the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, I was working at my desk at America magazine in midtown Manhattan. Around 9 a.m., my mother called from Philadelphia to say that she had heard about a plane crashing into
the World Trade Center. I thought it was odd that she would call; she knew that my office was uptown, not
downtown. A few minutes later, I decided to turn on the television set. It was only then that I saw the unfolding
tragedy.
That morning I had a doctor's appointment and so, still unsure of what exactly was happening, I walked
the few blocks to his office. But as I peered down Sixth Avenue (a few feet away from our office) I was horrified to see the Twin Towers with inky black smoke pouring from their tops. Even then, panicked people were
streaming uptown, desperately trying to use their cell phones (many of which had ceased to work since the cell
phone towers at the World Trade Center had been rendered useless). Numbly, I made my way to my doctor's
appointment.
An hour later, the scene was utterly different. Everyone's eyes faced downtown. People were weeping
in the streets, scanning the skies for another plane, racing toward subway entrances and desperately hailing
cabs.
When I returned to our offices, our receptionist told me that one of the buildings had collapsed. "That's
ridiculous," I said, angrily. "What radio station is saying that? That's impossible." Turning on the television
confirmed my worst fears.
That evening, I put my collar on and made my way to a local hospital a few blocks away, where victims
were to be brought. But the police officers in the lobby suggested that I walk farther downtown. So through the
empty streets, I walked to Chelsea Piers, a large sporting arena, to wait for victims who never came.
The next day I spent several hours at a family counseling center downtown, helping family members
pore through hospital records of patients who had been admitted. But, in the end, there would be few survivors.
Finally, on Sept. 13, I returned to Chelsea Piers and asked a police officer if they needed any help
downtown. He nodded curtly, waved for a police cruiser, and I jumped in and was taken down to "the site."
It was an absolutely appalling sight — the colossal, twisted buildings still on fire, piles of rubble
covered with a heavy layer of gray ash, and hundreds of uniformed firefighters and police officers seemingly
everywhere. Ten years later I can still remember the terrible acrid smell that pervaded everything. I felt like I
was in hell.
After emerging from the police car, stunned, I wondered what to do. I thought: I cannot bear to look at
bodies, I cannot bear to be in the morgue, but I can help the rescue workers. So I spent the next few days and
weeks, in between my work at the magazine, ministering to the rescue workers — firefighters, police officers,
EMTs, nurses, construction workers, military personnel and government workers from every conceivable
office. In time I was joined by my Jesuit brothers, many of them still in training.
In this hell I found grace. Working at the World Trade Center was one of the most profound experiences of the Holy Spirit I've ever had, for there I encountered an overwhelming sense of charity, unity and concord. Every person working at Ground Zero was "other-directed." Every person was selfless, utterly unconcerned for himself or herself. Every person seemed kind, considerate, loving.
All of their work, of course, was deeply informed by the sacrifices that had already been made by the
firefighters and rescue workers who gave their lives as they raced into the burning buildings on September 11.
For me, it was as if God was offering us a parable. In the Gospels, when people asked what God or the Kingdom of God is like, Jesus offered them a parable, a story drawn from nature or everyday life to help them
understand things more deeply. Jesus would say: God is like the father welcoming back his son. Or: God is
like a woman sweeping her house.
And here was God offering us a parable today. As I looked around at the rescue workers, I thought,
what is God like? God is like the firefighter who rushes into a burning building to save someone. That's how
much God loves us. And I saw this love expressed in the great charity of all the rescue workers who gathered
at the American Golgotha.
So for me, the experience of September 11, 2001, was not simply one of tragedy but also of resurrection. For me it embodied the Christian mystery of the cross: the place of unimaginable tragedy can also be the
place of new life that comes in unexpected ways.
Father James Martin, SJ, is a Jesuit priest, culture editor of America magazine, and the author of
several books, including Searching for God at Ground Zero.

resources for recruiting, educating and the formation of our seminarians. We often
benefit when we host seminarians for part of their training at our parish. Our most recent
was Dustin Busse, but there is Ace, and has been Fr. Tetzel, Fr. Dominic, Fr. Jorge,
Fr. Peter and more. If you are able to contribute, it will be greatly appreciated.

Final Parent Orientation Meeting

This meeting is required for parents of 10th-12th grade youth interested in receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation next spring. We will share important information about our Confirmation Preparation Program, review expectations for the
