Tango Pasión Where the Soul of Argentina Meets the Magic of Broadway The tango, a mythical dance tied to love and seduction, was born 100 years ago in the brothels of Buenos Aires, and only became a socially acceptable ballroom dance at the turn of the century when Parisian society embraced it. The tango swept the world in the 1920s with the songs of the legendary Carlos Gardel, as well as with Rudolph Valentino’s smoldering tango scene in the film The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Tango Pasión creates an evening peopled with characters from the different strata of Argentine society. Their interaction puts the dancing in context, building drama and providing the subtext of the show’s worldly humor. “The only limit to the vocabulary of the tango, aside from certain rules of style and form, is the limits of your imagination and passion. The tango is the eternal battleground between a man and a woman, it is the definitive act of love…in stylized form, of course,” notes producer-director Mel Howard. The split-second timing and flawless variations derive in part from the longevity of the artists’ performing together. The company of 25 dancers, singers, and musicians has toured world-wide since 1994. The dancers include several married couples who have been dancing together for years, “until they can breathe as one,” says choreographer Hector Zaraspe. The Tango Pasión company has changed programs six times over the years, covering the tango repertory from the music of the 1900s through the tango music of today. The newest tenth-anniversary program leans heavily on the music of Astor Piazolla. The new program is based in part on Piazolla’s Maria de Buenos Aires, in which Maria, a young woman disillusioned with men, finds herself and renewed hope as she falls in love once again. The musicians of the Sexteto Mayor have been performing together for over 30 years. Tango Pasión has played in front of over two million spectators in its 10 years of touring the major stages of Europe, Asia, South America, Australia and the US, including a stay on Broadway.
