Notas del Pastor
Dear Parishioners and Friends of Ascension,
On behalf of Fr. Daniel, Fr. Rafferty, and Msgr. Shelley, I wish you a very happy and
healthy 2016. The Christmas story is one of peace and hope. For some who are
marginalized, that can be a difficult message to hear. Hopefully our prayers during
these days of Christmas will, in some small way, uplift those who are alone or sad during these days of Christmas.
I wish to thank those who worked so very hard in making these Christmas celebrations so beautiful. A special word of
thanks to Mery Madera and all those who decorated the church. The church is always beautifully decorated for all the
different seasons - but in particular, during the Christmas and Easter Seasons. We also thank all of the liturgical ministers
– the altar servers, the lectors and the Eucharistic Ministers. Of course, one of the things that make the liturgies at
Ascension so beautiful and memorable is the music. Thanks to the Walkirios for their music on Christmas Day at the
12:30 Mass, and for their concert last Sunday. I would like to extend a special word of thanks to Preston Smith, the
director of music. Each of the Masses were beautiful, but distinct one from another. The Choir sang beautifully at the
Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve and on Christmas Day at 11:00a.m. Last Sunday at 11a.m. , the choir incorporated
Benjamin Britten’s “A Ceremony of Carols into the Mass. As always, very uplifting and well done. We certainly must
have one of the finest music programs in all of New York.
So many have done so much during this past year! Thank you one and all. On Friday, we celebrate the Solemnity of
Mary: Mother of God. I invite you to join us on Friday, for Mass in English at 11, and Mass in Spanish at 12:30. There
will also be two vigil masses celebrated on Thursday evening, 5p.m. in English and 7p.m. in Spanish. At those masses we
can pray together for peace.
I wish you God’s choicest blessings for the remainder of the Christmas Season and I wish you much health and happiness
as we begin a New Year together.

Queridos Feligreses y Amigos de la Ascensión,
De parte del Padre Daniel, Padre Rafferty y Mons. Shelley, les deseo un muy feliz y saludable 2016. La historia de la
Navidad es una de paz y esperanza. Para algunos que están marginados, éste puede ser un mensaje difícil de escuchar.
Espero que nuestras oraciones durante estos días de Navidad de alguna pequeña manera le levanten el espíritu a aquellos
que se encuentran solos o están tristes durante estos días de Navidad.
Deseo dar las gracias a todos los que trabajaron tan duro para hacer estas celebraciones de Navidad tan bellas. Una
palabra especial de gracias a Mery Madera y todos los que decoraron la iglesia. La iglesia siempre está decorada bella
para todas las diferentes temporadas – pero en particular, durante las temporadas de Navidad y la Pascua Florida.
También damos las gracias a todos los ministros litúrgicos – los monaguillos, los lectores y los ministros de la Eucaristía.
Por supuesto, una de las cosas que hace que las liturgias de la Ascensión sean tan bellas y memorables es la música.
Gracias a Los Walkirios por su música el día de Navidad en la misa de las 12:30 de la tarde y por su concierto el domingo
pasado. Me gustaría extender una palabra especial de gracias a Preston Smith – el director de música. Cada una de las
misas fue bella pero distinta la una de la otra. El coro cantó bellamente en la misa de medianoche en la Nochebuena y el
día de Navidad a las 11 de la mañana. El domingo pasado el coro incorporó en la misa “Ceremonia de Villancicos” de
Benjamín Britten. Como siempre, -- fue muy animado y bien hecho. Definitivamente, debemos de tener uno de los
mejores programas de música en todo Nueva York.
¡Tantos han hecho mucho durante este año pasado! Gracias a uno y a todos. El viernes celebramos la Solemnidad de
María, Madre de Dios. Los invito a que se reúnan con nosotros el viernes para para la misa de las 11 en inglés y la misa
de las 12:30 de la tarde en español. También habrá dos misas de vigilia celebradas el jueves por la tarde a las 5 en inglés
y a las 7 de la noche en español. En esas misas podemos orar juntos por la paz.
Les deseo las mejores bendiciones de Dios para lo que falta de la temporada de Navidad y les deseo mucha salud y
felicidad al comenzar juntos un Año Nuevo.

Centennial year on Saturday, January 30, 2016 at the
church, 529 West. 121st St., Manhattan. The
program begins at 2:00PM with Daniel P. Horan
OFM as keynote speaker. This will be followed by
speakers who will talk on the women who shaped
Merton's thought and spirituality, especially
Baroness Catherine de Hueck Doherty and Sisters
Therese Lentfoehr. Father Rafferty will celebrate
