Outside its native country, it has gone on to great success in France as the lead grape in Rhône Valley’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape as Grenache. In up-and-coming Spanish appellations such as Campo de Borja, it also takes pride of place. Located south of Rioja along the Ebro River, Campo de Borja has a continental climate, meaning the region is very hot and arid during summer and cold in winter. The intense summer temperatures allow producers such as regional leader Borsao to get the warmth-loving Garnacha to fully ripen while maintaining complexity, creating full-bodied and smooth wines with plenty of character. BORSAO TRES PICOS GARNACHA 2010 DO Campo de Borja, Spain 273748 (XD) 750 mL $19.95 TASTING NOTE: One of my favorite offerings from the Bodegas Borsao is the 6,000-case cuvee of the 2010 Tres Picos. Made from 100% Garnacha aged in equal parts stainless steel and French oak, this is the Bodegas Borsao’s interpretation of Chateauneuf du Pape. (But when’s the last time you saw a bottle of Chateauneuf du Pape priced [under $20] – about 30 years ago?) Deep notes of roasted herbs, sweet black cherries and raspberries, peppers and spice soar from the glass of this dark ruby/purple-tinged wine. (Yes, you can even see tiny cacti growing on slopes throughout the region.) Its impressive bodies of temperature-moderating water, the sheer length of the Kelowna Penticton Oliver WASHINGTON STATE Valley (it passes through many lines of latitude) and different climatic conditions, the exposure of the vineyards (mostly west-facing), the high altitude and soil variations – sandy loam in the south; denser with more gravel and phosphorous content in the north – all help create different styles of wines. THE INSIDE STORY GOOD TASTE Atholl Brose is the traditional nightcap of January 25th (Robbie Burns Day) and furthermore, dandy in mojitos. The liqueur has a stormy past. In the Scottish Highlands of 1475, Lord Iain MacDonald planned to attack the Earl of Atholl and take over his land. The Earl got wind of it and sent his lackeys to fill MacDonald’s well with whisky, honey and oatmeal while he slept. A bemusing strategy, but it worked. You can image MacDonald’s men pulling up the bucket of the well in the morning, tasting the delicious “water” and perhaps superstitiously thinking it a sign of imminent victory. According to legend, the men spent too much time at the exciting well, and were shortly defeated; but the irresistible blend of flavours lives on to this day. You could say this whisky liqueur is from “Auld Lang Syne,” meaning days long past, the ballad traditionally sung on Robbie Burns Day. At the line “…take a cup o’ kindness yet/For auld lang syne” a wee dram of whisky liqueur would be most appropriate, for this sort of “kindness” is especially good. At the 2012 World Whiskies Awards, Dunkeld Atholl Brose won World’s Best Whisky Liqueur. A smooth liqueur with balanced sweetness, Atholl Brose has the aromatics of a Speyside single malt touched with honey, herbs, and toasted oatmeal. 24 VINTAGES SERVE IT UP Top it with Devonshire (aka clotted) cream in a scotch glass for a decadent treat. Astrid Brummer, Ontario Wine Buyer I love it because... 1. 2. Best of Both Worlds What’s in a name? Shiraz and Syrah are the same grape – the difference is one of style. The former tends to signify rich, full fruit character while the latter points to food-friendly elegance and refinement. Winemakers in Niagara are doubly blessed because in those places where the grape does well, the resulting wines can combine the best of both. Sunny summers bring out big ripe fruit, while the lake-cooled vineyards keep all that brilliant acidity and freshness intact. In a hot vintage like 2010, Jackson-Triggs can turn big-time warmth and sunshine into beautifully robust and complex Shiraz such as this one. Yes, we wine lovers get to have our cake and eat it, too. The wine features aromas of black cherry, coffee bean, chocolate, blackberry and woodsmoke. Dry with excellent replays supported by plush tannins and a crisp acid frame. Drink it tonight with rare steaks, or cellar it for 3-5 years. (VINTAGES panel, May 2012) TASTING NOTE: Gorgeous aromas of blueberries and currants follow through to a full body, with ultra-fine tannins and a berry, mineral and spice aftertaste. Lasts a long time. Best after 2012. Score: 92 (James Suckling, jamessuckling.com, Aug. 4, 2011) 121194 (XD) 750 mL $18.95 TASTING NOTE: The 2006 Chianti Riserva Rio Camerata is the least showy of the wines and by far the classiest. Subtle hints of pipe tobacco, plums, leather, licorice and spices flow effortlessly from this mid-weight Chianti Riserva. The structure of the vintage is present, but not in a way that prevents the near-term enjoyment of this beautifully sculpted, delineated wine. Floral, minty notes linger on the understated finish. Full bodied, with an ever-sosubtle kiss of sweetness bringing a touch of decadence to a core of dried fruit and freshly turned earth. This has the power to match blackened leg of lamb with dried figs, or enjoy it after a meal with high-cacao (70% or more) dark chocolate. (VINTAGES panel, Nov. 2012) BOVIN VRANEC 2010 Tikves Wine Region 095836 (D) 750 mL $32.95 2 TASTING NOTE: Herbs, spices, red and black cherry all feature on the nose giving it lots of complexity. There is sweet fruit in the middle giving a softer richer quality and as the tannins feel ripe the back palate has suppleness. Spicy red fruits refresh the finish. Drink 2012-18. TASTING NOTE: Pretty Chasselas from one of Switzerland’s finest appellations, Neuchâtel. Aromas suggest peach, mineral, lemon-lime and notions of spring flowers. Dry and very tangy with a superior refreshing quality. This would make an exceptional between-course palate refresher, or pair with seafood appetizers to kick off a fine meal. (VINTAGES panel, April 2012) TASTING NOTE: Well made wine with pronounced blackcurrants on the nose with a hint of spice and menthol. Still very young but great potential.
