This time, she is hunting a serial killer that takes revenge on people who commit moral misconduct. The guideline that he uses is the list of the seven social sins enumerated by Gandhi: knowledge without character, wealth without work, pleasure without conscience, commerce without morality, science without humanity, worship without sacrifice, and politics without principle. On the campus of the University of Düsseldorf, the dead body of Professor Jan Prokter is found, who was beaten to death. He carries a USB stick with a message: “You shall not have knowledge without conscience.” When profiler Fran Miller and Sascha Herz, the head of the major case squad, start investigating their first leads, it becomes clear that Prokter had many enemies who don’t regret that he is dead. And before they get the chance to interrogate all suspects, another dead body shows up that is also carrying a message: carved into the forehead. Charlotte Schneidmann and Peter Käfer are called to a boarding school. A dead body has been found at Lemburg Castle, in the historic part of the boarding school, which also houses a small museum with a display of ancient torture instruments that is open to the public. One of the students – Max Wenke – is stuck in an iron maiden lying toppled on the floor. The 17-year-old victim is covered with stab wounds; the cause of death is exsanguination. What happened? Was it an accident during a hazing ritual? A suicide? Or a brutal murder? Max was one of the school’s stars, one of the best students ever, popular with the teachers, and respected and feared by his schoolmates. He could have any girl he wanted even though there was the persistent rumor he might be gay. The Lemburg pupils behave in a condescending and arrogant way towards the two detectives but it doesn’t take long and Charlotte und Käfer find out that Max used to manipulate people, as he pleased, and had no scruples about defending his image by all means at his disposal. So Max was a typical winner and that makes a suicide rather improbable. But his mother, Sonja, paints a completely different picture of her son: sensitive and vulnerable, Max was still mourning the loss of his father, who died a year ago to the day. Prior to his death, Alexander Wenke had been in charge of a significant construction project at Lemburg Castle that caused some resentment among parents and teachers. Yet, his deadly car accident during the construction phase did not raise any suspicion. However, with Max’s death exactly one year later, it appears in a different light, and neither Charlotte nor Käfer are willing to believe in a morbid prank of fate. So was it suicide after all? Or did father and son both fall victim to the same killer? After the Spiegel bestsellers FINAL CUT, AGONY, and GUARDIAN OF DEATH, THE PENCILLER OF DEATH is the fourth thriller featuring Clara Vidalis, the pathopsychology expert at Berlin’s State Office of Criminal Investigations, LKA, who - together with her team - hunts down sexual predators, ritual murderers, and serial killers. The discovery of a corpse puzzles the Berlin Police Department. The murder victim was appallingly mutilated and covered with strange signs that look somehow familiar to Clara Vidalis and her team. Are these carvings into the flesh ritual symbols, a particularly extreme form of body decoration, or could it be that they are a code? When the autopsy of the victim reveals even more gruesome details, it becomes clear that there were crimes in the past with a similar modus operandi. The trail leads to a serial killer who, ten years ago, spread fear among the population of the western United States. During the course of one summer, the “Angel of Death” struck terror with his killings before, all of a sudden, bidding his farewell with a bloody message, “It’s not over till it’s over.” Has the „Angel of Death“ returned? But what is he doing in Berlin of all places? And what has he done during the past decade? In 2004, Eva Almstädt published her first crime thriller in the series. Ever since, her Pia Korittki novels have become massive success stories and this without any form of marketing support, just by word of mouth. Especially online, in the social networking world, the author has long become a cult-like sensation. One of the distinctive characteristics of Eva Almstädt’s crime thriller series is the fact that the murders take place in the rural settings along the German Baltic coast. There, where one would least expect it, the evil lurks behind the conservative façade. Another secret of the series’ success lies in the charismatic cast of characters, led by detective Pia Korittki whose personal and love life is filled with surprising twists and turns and dramatic events so that she grows on the readers, more and more with every volume. The pastor of a village on the Baltic coast is found dead in the sacristy – murdered. Police detective Pia Korittki and her Lübeck-based major case response team start investigating. The case proves to be quite challenging, though, as the pastor doesn’t seem to have had any enemies. It is only after a second murder that the facades begin to crumble. All of a sudden, Pia finds herself fighting on all fronts – both in her personal life, as she runs the risk of losing custody of her son, Felix, and professionally. For the villagers succumb to an old superstition that says: Death comes in threes. Eva Almstädt, born in Hamburg in 1965, is a television producer and interior decorator. A friendly and slightly bewildered look at Sicily, its beauty, its stereotypes and absurdities, and an investigator that one cannot help but love. On her 60th birthday, Aunt Poldi decides that she has had enough. She is tired of life and all she wants is to go to the ocean and die there, in peace. But there is more to Sicily than just the ocean and good food, there is also the family of her late husband, Peppe. A combination of vitality and joie de vivre that doesn’t exactly make it easy on her to die. When then, on top of that, her young gardener gets murdered the peaceful times are over for good. Aunt Poldi has a purpose and a goal: to apprehend the murderer. In the process, she follows the trace of valuable mosaics and lion statues that were stolen from a gate, has to search for mushrooms on Mount Etna and survive a Sicilian wedding and, of course, wherever she goes, she feels surrounded by Mafia. However, it is a chance for Aunt Poldi to show the boys down there how an investigation is conducted when it is done in the correct manner. No wonder that handsome Commissario Montana is extremely annoyed that she is poking her nose into his case. But in the long run, no one can resist Aunt Poldi. Some of Aunt Poldi’s pearls of wisdom: „The first rule of success for women in business! If things get serious: always wear a skirt, always show your cleavage! “ „Always overdress, because: Decency is weakness, mark my words!“ „If all else has failed, stick to the emergency plan: A prosecco to wake up. Then an espresso with a shot of Grappa. At 11:00 am the first wheat beer. And so on.“ Mario Giordano, born in Munich in 1963, studied psychology at the University of Düsseldorf. Lothar E. Schuknecht, retired chief prosecutor and Professor Emeritus of legal philosophy, is on a mission: An anonymous letter writer has sent him a hit list. 30 years after a devastating fire in a rehab facility for addiction treatment in Biblinghausen, a village in the German region of Bergisches Land, the people, who were responsible, are targeted to be assassinated. Schuknecht tries to prevent this by all means – even at the cost of moving away from Hamburg and into the seclusion of Biblinghausen. In the disguise of a hobby entomologist, he starts investigating immediately drawing the attention of the suspicious villagers. Veronika Dornbusch-Bommelbeck, retired elementary school teacher and bustling manager of the local momand-pop shop, has a hunch that something odd and strange is going on in Biblinghausen. It cannot be that a farmer slips on his new golf shoes and drowns in his own cesspool; this must have been murder - disguised as an accident. And also the sudden death of her neighbor, Käthe Tragelehn, seems to have been caused by everything but natural causes. The arrival of chief prosecutor Schuknecht raises the hope in Veronika that she has finally found an ally in her fight against crime. However, Schuknecht is not at all enthused by her ambitions. And soon, there is another dead body – and an attempt on the life of Hendrike Tragelehn, grandniece and heiress of the late Käthe, who has just returned from London. THE CRY OF THE SEAGULL is after MURDERS ON THE COAST the second case for police inspector John Benthien and his team. Whenever he has the chance, Flensburg-based police detective John Benthien spends time in his weathered captain’s house on the island of Sylt. On a gloomy October morning, two boys are killed in the vicinity of the building. Was it an accident or murder? Benthien starts to investigate. As it turns out, the twins were vacation guests at the Astarte guesthouse. There, inside the age-old Frisian house, the detective is met with a horrible sight: A woman was brutally smothered to death. At this point, Benthien has no idea that this won’t be the last death that is going to haunt the small guesthouse. On the advice of his publisher, he takes a timeout and decides to head for the mountains where he can work on his next novel in peace and quiet. He is caught in a surprise snowstorm on his drive. After he passes through a tunnel and arrives in a remote Alpine valley, an avalanche comes down, and he has an accident. When he regains consciousness, he finds himself in a small mountain village that has been temporarily shut off from the outside world by the avalanche and heavy snowfall. Although all of the residents are nice – perhaps a bit eccentric here and there – Fall finds something strange about the village right from the start. And soon afterwards there is a murder. Strange in itself but all the more astonishing for Fall is the fact that the victim has been draped in the same manner as in his latest novel – which hasn’t even been published yet! Who could know about it? Fall has a vested interest in giving the case 100 percent and solving it, even though he himself is a suspect. Yet there is no lack of suspects, particularly among the male population, because it soon turns out that the victim was pregnant. She wanted to leave the village and flee. She didn’t succeed. Ultimately, Fall manages to find the perpetrator and apprehend him. The world seems to be in order once again. It has also stopped snowing, and Fall can leave the village. Or so he thinks. He gets into his car, drives through the tunnel, and winds up back where he departed from: the same little mountain village. THE FALL SNOW CASE (Vol. 2): Peter Fall is still stuck in the little mountain village. He simply cannot bring himself to leave. What is going on here? There is an age-old secret that makes it a very special place, a secret that the villagers try to guard and hide at any cost. They do not even shy away from murder. And so it begins to dawn on Peter that he may have made a mistake and that he hasn’t found the real question mark killer yet. For nothing in this case is what it seems to be, absolutely NOTHING... NATURAL BORN CHILLERS is a romantic comedy about three girlfriends and a crazy idea – a real girlfriends book to recommend to others. Janna is a single mother who works from her desk at home writing travel guides about countries that she has never visited. Helen is a successful PR exec at a huge corporation, who switches men almost as often as she changes her silk underwear. Lou dreams of opting out of the consumer society completely and lead a selfsufficient life. One boozy night, the three girlfriends sit together commiserating with each other. As tipsy as they are, they come up with a new career plan for Janna: They want her to write a guidebook for the publishing house that has just hired Helen for a marketing campaign. In a goofing mood, they start writing the synopsis of a Stone Age Guidebook titled “Natural Born Chillers”. They mix the Stone Age with modern cultural despair, sex with asceticism, blend in some nutrition and some abstinence, some art and some love of nature, and the result is an exotic mixture. Crucial for this new philosophy of life: to be relaxed, to be lazy, and to do nothing. And Janna’s, Helen’s, and Lou’s new Stone Age formula for a happier life is: „There is power in the cave”. In order to add more authenticity and credibility to the project, the women invent the pseudonym of a male author with a ludicrous life story. But then the success of the book turns the lives of the three friends upside down. The first thing on their to-do-list is to find someone who can fit into the role of the guru, who allegedly wrote the guidebook. No sooner said than done! But this is when the real problems start. Especially those with the handsome brother of the guru-wannabe. Mara Andeck was born in 1967. Ever since the previously lively girl has grown into a withdrawn and depressed teenager. Her mother, Emilie, had hoped spending the summer vacation in Spain could change that but their trip ends in tragedy: On their way home, mother and daughter get in a car accident on the freeway. Even though they remain unharmed, they watch, as others need to be rescued, some of them critically injured. Furthermore, one of the cars involved in the pile-up is a horse trailer with five animals inside. Four of the horses cannot be saved and a policeman euthanizes them on the spot by shooting them in the head. Miraculously, however, a young gelding has escaped almost uninjured except for a few abrasions. Due to the facts that the horse trailer is no longer roadworthy and the truck’s driver and owner of the horses is injured, they want to euthanize the young gelding, too. When Clara overhears them talking about that, she tries desperately to prevent the policeman from killing the animal. On the spur of the moment, Emilie buys the horse from its handler saving the animal’s life. But already during the transport to Germany, it becomes clear that their new pet, „Fellow“, suffered a severe psychological trauma that requires exceptional care. The horse has a problem that Emilie cannot remedy with her usual dedication; vigilance is needed and, most of all, patience. All the horse trainers that she calls in fail because of the animal’s distrust and deep-rooted grief. In this seemingly hopeless situation, Emilie hears about Daniel who used to be known as a real “horse whisperer” but gave up this job a few years earlier to live a secluded life running some kind of sanctuary for old horses and horses that can no longer be ridden. She calls him and asks him to take “Fellow” in and work with him. Initially, the horse expert agrees but when Emilie explains to him that the horse will not even go close to a trailer, Daniel refuses to come to them and work with the horse. So there is only one thing left for Emilie to do: On foot, she and Clara and Fellow set off to meet with Daniel. A deeply moving novel in the tradition of “The Horse Whisperer“. Once again, as in his previous novel, Di Fulvio weaves a powerful and multi-layered plot that makes the book an intimate and rich portrait of its time as well as a coming-of-age story. The incredibly colorful setting of THE CHILD WHO FOUND THE SUN AT NIGHT draws the reader instantly into the plot and the unique and distinctive characters that carry the story evoke a myriad of feelings in the readers’ minds that take them on an emotional roller-coaster ride. Set during the beginnings of Humanism, the background of the novel is the idea that men should awake to their own creative power. For his setting, Di Fulvio chose (fictitious) locations in the Eastern region of the Italian Alps that provide the novel with a luminous atmospheric density. But there are also scenes that do not take place in Italy and another important location is, for instance, the German city of Konstanz during “the times of the three Popes”. The story begins with a massacre that changes the life of 9-year-old Marcus III. di Saxia, son of the Prince of Raühnval, as his entire family gets murdered. Raühnval Castle, once an imposing and well-maintained fortress with vast landholdings, is now reduced to ashes. With the help of Eloisa, who is the daughter of the village’s midwife, Marcus finds a place to hide and stays alive – yet his old life must end for a new one to begin. As Marcus needs to be protected from suspicious questions, the small, blonde, well fed, and slightly chicken-hearted son of a Prince that was used to being spoiled with love, spends a full year in a dark dungeon where Agnete provides him with the basics. Then he resurfaces with a new identity: Mikael, a delicate and pale orphan, whom Agnete claims to have bought from a child trafficker so that he can help her with some of her work. From now on, Mikael has to carry his fate in his own hands. He will have to stand up to the villagers. And every now and then, he will find himself face-to-face with Ojsternik, the megalomaniac ruler of the neighboring land of Raühnval as well as the man, who murdered his family, and Mikael will have to endure his cruel humiliations. But as he grows up, Mikael will discover his inner resources and learn to use them, and he will find a way between the two extremes: his urge for revenge and his personal idea of a life lived in freedom and justice. There will be times when he will leave the country and go to places like Konstanz where he will meet many people that will open up new horizons for him: agitators and rebels, heretics, and other representatives of Humanism. Until he finally returns to Raühnval to settle his score with Ojsternik. And he will do it his way. Also available: THE GIRL WHO TOUCHED THE SKY Luca Di Fulvio was born in 1957. Soon she finds herself surrounded by numerous other emigrants on one of the “swimming coffins”. She is more dead than alive when she arrives in Virginia, where she is sold to work on a plantation that belongs to the Huntley family, genteel English tobacco farmers. Right after her arrival on the plantation where she starts working as soon as she has recovered from the passage, she incurs the wrath of Dorothy, the lady of the house, and the jealousy of Rose, an ambitious mulatta, who feels her position threatened by the new white girl and starts to plot against her. However, Anni finds a confidante in Abigail, an older slave, who takes care of the children and those among the servants that are sick or giving birth. When Lorenz finds out about the horrible conditions, under which Anni lives in slavery-like servitude, he joins a special unit that embarks on a secret mission to Virginia. Once there, he wants to see what he can do for Anni. But when he gets to Williamsburg, it is almost too late. Maria W. Peter studied languages, literature, ancient history, and classical archaeology. While she was still attending university, she started working as a journalist and her work was honored with numerous awards. She earned a Fulbright fellowship and studied at the prestigious School of Journalism in Columbia/Missouri. 28 Bastei Lübbe AG - Foreign Rights Department - Schanzenstraße 6-20 - 51063 Köln - Germany Tel: +49 (0)2 21| 82 00 -27 04 oder 27 00 - Fax: +49 (0)2 21| 82 00 17 04 Christian Stüwe ([email protected]) Caroline Roth: IN THE ARMS OF THE WIND Historical Novel approx. 464 pages 978-3-404-17248-1 Paperback May 2015 Full of sensual colors, heavy scents, and lethal dangers: the Caribbean in the 18th century Up until the death of her husband - a land owner who was almost twice her age -, Fleur Livarien, a young French woman, lived a peaceful life with him in the countryside. The story takes place in a world that is divided among four peoples: There are the forest people, the mountain towners, the islanders, and the residents of the hidden empire of the magicians that is called Calypto. Strictly speaking, the inhabitants of the empire are just a handful of the last magicians who secluded themselves inside a mountain. But from there, they are planning their return to the surface in order to build a new Calyptian Empire. The story is told from the perspective of Lasnic who belongs to the forest folks, a people that lives in the woods and among whom are some that have magical skills. In the beginning, Lasnic, the lead protagonist, is a scalawag and a rake. But then, unexpectedly, the forest folks appoint him their new leader: the forest prince. Fleeing from the responsibility, he leaves the woods. He gets captured and becomes the prisoner of Queen Eisin, the monarch over the matriarchally ruled mountain towns. During the course of the novel, he will have to join forces with Queen Eisin, as her half-sister is weaving a net of intrigues in the attempt to seize the power for herself. In a fortress dungeon, they suffer the same fate, become companions in misery, and become aware of another danger: a small but powerful clan of magicians is threatening their peoples. The Calyptian magicians create an intense and menacing element: They send out four “spies”, in all four cardinal directions, to find a people that is supposed to serve them, which means, to work as their slaves in order to build them the perfect Calyptian Empire on the surface of the world. Mishaps That Occur when Technology Meets Idiocy Infotainment approx. 224 pages 978-3-404-60836-2 Paperback July 2015 A book for all technology haters: Angry, surreal, and hilariously funny The increasing technologization of our daily lives has reached a critical level of concern: Crashing computers, malfunctioning navigation systems, and exploding microwave ovens make our lives pretty difficult. Time for a book that presents the dumbest of all the dumb mishaps that people had to endure while dealing with modern technology. For instance, in November of 2010, not one but two motorists drove their cars right into a creek because they trusted more in their GPS navigation devices than they trusted their eyes. A woman received a delivery from Telekom, that contained a whopping 552 DSL routers even though a single one would have been enough to completely overwhelm her. And a senior citizen had to be rescued by the fire department after he got stuck in his electric foldaway bed. $200,000.00 in compensatory damages – that’s what the owner of a dumpling cannon had to pay for what he shot out of the sky during the traditional cannon salute at the annual Oktoberfest in Clarksville, Tennessee: A Phantom II fighter jet. The ancient artillery piece from the Civil War shot the dumplings with so much power that the plane suffered severe damage. The pilot was forced to make an emergency landing. What a relief it is to find out that there are people out there who are even bigger idiots than we are when trying to use newfangled gadgets and gizmos. The Gringel family decided to get a dog. And with the arrival of the puppy, a new era began for the Gringels. From now on, they were a family of five. When he was still a puppy, Flocke was incredibly cute. But equally incredible were the cluelessness and ignorance that plagued the Gringel family in the beginning. The little one chewed his dog bed to pieces, was so excited when they took him for a walk that he forgot to do his business outside and did it later in the house, and whenever he saw fellow living creatures, he went wild. What nobody understood was: the daily care and training of a young dog require patience and experience. After only a short period of time, domestic bliss went out the window, and mother Gringel, who shouldered most of the Flocke-related work, was on the verge of a nervous breakdown. The family went through extreme emotional anguish but they persevered. In the end, everything worked out fine and the new family member turned out to be a true friend and shows the rest of them how it is done: life itself and happiness in the here and now. In ME HAVING FLESH OF GENIUS, Philipp Möller returns to the education sector. 16-year-old Khalim comes from a family that immigrated from an Arabic-speaking country, and he is facing severe problems at school, mainly due to his lack of knowledge of the German language. When his father ends up in a coma after suffering a traffic accident, Khalim’s grades plummet even further and he is in danger of not graduating. Philipp is hired as his private tutor to work with the boy and help him get his diploma. In the beginning, this task proves to be rather difficult, as Khalim is more interested in smoking pot and hanging around with his petty-criminal friends, but over time, Philipp and Khalim develop a close relationship and bond with each other. Before long, Philipp realizes that Khalim’s lack of language skills is not only the reason for his failure in school but also for the fact that he constantly rubs people the wrong way. No wonder that the boy is becoming increasingly frustrated and aggressive. Therefore, Philipp makes the decision to not only teach him the basics of the German language but also the basics of social interaction. So the two of them are taking the plunge into the real world, go shopping together and rehearse for job interviews. Just when things are looking up, Khalim’s father passes away and all the progress that was made seems to count for nothing. His experiences with Khalim make Philipp Möller pause and think about an important question: How is it in today’s society - are we still speaking the same language? Or is it that the social middleclass has long begun to communicate over the heads of the educationally disadvantaged? ME HAVING FLESH OF GENIUS is a charming blend of a personal story, mind-boggling observations, and socially relevant reflections in a continuous succession of humorous stories and serious thoughts. They pretend they only want what is best for us. The reality is that they sneak into our personal lives, regulate our habits, and prohibit more and more of the things that are fun. Smoking in pubs? Alcohol consumption in public places? In the meantime, all of these things have been banned. Now they are warning us, in thunder tones, of the dangers inherent in eating too much meat or riding a bicycle without a helmet. It is a paradox: On the one hand, we have more freedoms than any generation before us. On the other hand, there has never been a society that is not a dictatorship, which has lived under that much control. And thanks to Facebook and Google, we have never been as transparent, as we are today. So one wonders: What about personal freedom, the right of individual self-determination and, first and foremost, the pursuit of fun in life? Uwe Wilhelm set out on a search for a life worth living and in the process, he took a very close look at our society. In episodes and with a lot of wit, he creates a parade of weird virtuecrats that crossed his path to happiness. There is the medical moralizer, who, during a barbecue, warns him of the danger of eating too much bratwurst cheerfully quoting the latest studies about the consumption of fatty foods. And then there is, of course, the green moralizer, vigilantly monitoring whether or not Uwe Wilhelm is separating his garbage correctly, while treating himself once a year to a long-distance trip – and this, of course, without any regard for the CO2 balance. Uwe Wilhelm shows the reader how to stand up against moralizers and do-gooders. Because living a healthy and sustainable lifestyle is all well and good but not if the whole thing turns into an obsessive compulsion that makes us forget what it really is that makes life worth living. Uwe Wilhelm, born in Hanau in 1957, has written more than 120 screenplays. But then one day, during a river-trip on the Nile, which turned out shit - literally - for most of the passengers, he caught a different kind of bug, the travel bug: He made the decision to combine his favorite hobby with his profession as a physician and, from then on, he traveled as a ship’s doctor. Pointedly, with humor and at times, in a very romantic style, he shares the best stories of his travels around the world. A lady with dementia running buck-naked through the on-board restaurant, one hundred passengers vomiting after the Captain’s Dinner, and an unauthorized fireworks display leading to a bloody mood on deck – on a cruise liner, peculiar emergencies are the order of the day. Since his first trip, Fritz Wittmann has visited more than eighty countries cruising the Moldova as well as the Mississippi River and the Amazon. In Tonga, – allegedly an archipelago with cannibals but without physicians –, he took care of a brave woman from Berlin. He accompanied an old couple on their journey to Iceland but only one of the spouses would return home. And he witnessed the norovirus sweeping through an entire cruise liner and infecting so many passengers off the coast of Scotland that the British authorities declared a state of emergency and quarantined the ship. Felix Wittmann, born in 1954, earned his medical degree at the universities of Homburg/Saar and Erlangen. In 1987, after his clinical training to become a specialist in general medicine, he went into private practice. Since the mid-nineties, he has been accompanying tourist groups as a physician. Since 2005, he has been working several months per year as a ship’s doctor. 42 Bastei Lübbe AG - Foreign Rights Department - Schanzenstraße 6-20 - 51063 Köln - Germany Tel: +49 (0)2 21| 82 00 -27 04 oder 27 00 - Fax: +49 (0)2 21| 82 00 17 04 Christian Stüwe ([email protected]) Juliane Zimmermann: THE DEVIL IS IN THE INTERCITY-EXPRESS Infotainment 238 Pages 978-3-404-60817-1 Paperback January 2015 Everyone is complaining about the train service but how do their employees feel, who have to put up with the passengers’ anger? A train attendant’s life is one big adventure. You meet tons of exciting people and travel an awful lot. That’s at least what Juliane Zimmermann thought when she started her job more than 15 years ago. Never had she expected that it would be more like riding a razor blade. Fact is that many travelers are not overly happy with the train service. Every now and then, delays, train cancellations, or incorrect reservations may cause some passengers to erupt in uncontrolled fury. But these problems can be quickly remedied with a smile, a few comforting words or, if necessary, with a free drink. However, special skill and sensitivity are required, as soon as a passenger sits naked on a table, drops his glass eye in the toilet, or thinks he is the devil incarnate – the reason why he doesn’t buy a ticket, as it would immediately go up in flames between his fingers. With wit and humor, Juliane Zimmermann shares anecdotes about the small and big challenges of a daily work routine that we think we all know so well but which is full of incredibly peculiar stories. Funny, entertaining, and filled with anecdotes: the perfect travel companion for all railway riders Juliane Zimmermann has been working as a train attendant for the Deutsche Bahn for 15 years. Since the 1960s, he has sold more than 50 million records. His hits and his distinctive appearance made him an icon of the folk music scene. And his success is timeless. Throughout the years to the present day, he has won an innumerable amount of prizes, golden records, and other awards. In 2013, he published a cover album with new arrangements of old favourites that also introduced and endeared him to the younger audience. By now, entire families go to his concerts. With performances in the United States, Canada, and Africa to name just a few places, Heino’s fame has also spread beyond the borders of Germany. Now in his book, he looks back at his turbulent life. And one thing becomes clear: Heino has always been a modern man, right from the start. Be it as a single parent, as a folk singer who marries a princess, or as an old-timer that covers pop songs. Now, in his book, he takes stock. He writes about his love for music, about people who accompanied him along the way, about big losses, begrudgers and critics, and about how he has always reinvented himself and become the cross-generational icon that he is. 45 Bastei Lübbe AG - Foreign Rights Department - Schanzenstraße 6-20 - 51063 Köln - Germany Tel: +49 (0)2 21| 82 00 -27 04 oder 27 00 - Fax: +49 (0)2 21| 82 00 17 04 Christian Stüwe ([email protected]) Tinga Horny: THE DAUGHTER THAT WAS GIVEN AWAY How I Searched for My Biological Parents and Found My True Home Memoir/ True Story approx. 224 pages 978-3-404-60850-8 Paperback May 2015 The story of a woman who finds her home far away from her roots One look at Tinga Horny and one would immediately guess that the girl with the raven hair and the almond shaped, dark eyes that walks between her blonde mother and her blue-eyed father cannot be the biological child of her parents. Hanna Schöner’s childhood, though, was marked by relentless and incalculable criticism, contempt, and callousness. Up until well into her adulthood, she was convinced that she was not good enough, that she was not loveable. “The scum of the earth, a dirty pig”, that’s what her mother used to call her. How does one survive such a childhood? How is it possible for a person to provide her children with the love that she herself has never experienced? And how does one love oneself? Hanna Schöner tells her moving story. For all readers of heart-rending women’s stories Hanna Schöner, born in the Harz district in the 1960s, works as a freelance journalist. Franz Zschornack spends three years as a journeyman on the road. During this time, he travels without a cell phone either hitching a ride or trekking on foot. He depends on people to give him – a wandering stranger – shelter and a place to sleep. He is not allowed to get closer than 30 kilometers to his home village. Whether it is about his first chilly night in the open when he did not dare to ask for a place to stay, or about unexpected hospitality, help, and solidarity, Franz takes the reader with him on his exceptional journey. The book, which feels like it fell out of a time machine and is at the same time incredibly relevant to all the things that make life worth living and special, shows us that it is possible to find happiness on the road and recognize what really matters and shapes us into what we are. Franz Zschornack, born in 1985, was trained as a construction mechanic. In November of 2009, he set out on his three-year-journey as a journeyman that led him from Erfuhrt through some European countries to South America. Even though he has returned to live in his home village, he still goes out into the world working as a locksmith and telling stories about his experiences as a journeyman. 49 Bastei Lübbe AG - Foreign Rights Department - Schanzenstraße 6-20 - 51063 Köln - Germany Tel: +49 (0)2 21| 82 00 -27 04 oder 27 00 - Fax: +49 (0)2 21| 82 00 17 04 Christian Stüwe ([email protected])
