The population of Northwest Arkansas
has been increasing rapidly for the last
several years. With this growth, we
have new neighbors arriving from all
parts of the United States and several
other countries.
As mayor of this great city, one of my
primary goals is maintaining open
communications and good relationships with all
sectors of our community. With the growing
population in Springdale, all residents, no matter
where they come from, should have information
available about the services, opportunities, and

La Organización de Mujeres Hispanas de Arkansas (HWOA por
sus siglas en ingles) esta muy orgullosa de presentar esta
primera edición de Bienvenidos a Springdale, una guía bilingüe
para asistir a nuevos residentes de la comunidad de
Springdale, Arkansas. Además de informarle de programas de
HWOA, también le proporciona información acerca de los
recursos que existen para ayudarle a tener un mejor comienzo
en su nueva vida.

The Hispanic Women’s Organization of Arkansas (HWOA) proudly presents the first edition of Welcome to
Springdale, a bilingual guide to assist new residents of the community of Springdale, Arkansas. In addition
to HWOA’s programs, the guide provides information on resources in the community to help people start
their new lives.
The Hispanic community brings to the city of Springdale a rich diversity in labor and intellectual forces that
earns the area economy a top place in the nation. Northwest
Arkansas’ healthy economy has one of the lowest
unemployment rates in the United States. From local
businesses to international corporations, Springdale offers
equal opportunities for all. In our community, new residents
will find the same shared values of hard work, family,
education, and faith.
It is our hope that this guide provides the information you
need to make you feel at home in Springdale.

Historia de la Organización / History of the Organization
HWOA es una organización sin fines de lucro establecida en julio de 1999 por un grupo de mujeres, en su mayoría hispanas.
Desde entonces el grupo ha estado activo en diferentes áreas. Los programas y eventos que patrocina HWOA están basados
en el respeto a las tradiciones que existen en la comunidad de Arkansas al mismo tiempo que integran elementos de las culturas hispanas. Aunque la mayoría de participantes son de origen hispano, los miembros de HWOA provienen de diferentes
orígenes y culturas. Nuestra diversidad es nuestra fortaleza.
HWOA is a non-profit organization founded in July 1999 by a group of women, mostly Hispanic. Since then, the group has
been actively involved in numerous endeavors. HWOA appreciates and values harmony across cultures. HWOA’s community
events are based on respect for existing community traditions while introducing new elements of Hispanic cultures. Though
predominantly Hispanic, HWOA members come from many backgrounds. Our diversity is our strength.
Programas / Programs
GEMA (GEM Guiding, Empowering, Mentoring por su titulo en ingles) es un programa que ayuda a los participantes a
aprender como funcionar dentro de los sistemas sociales y educacionales de los Estados Unidos, así como a encontrar oportunidades de superación para lograr la autosuficiencia. Este programa apoya a nuevos residentes y los guía con información
acerca de fuentes de trabajo, cómo buscar empleo, centros educativos, y agencias de servicios sociales. El programa esta
ayudando a personas nuevas en la comunidad a desarrollar su potencial y les brinda apoyo moral por medio de mentores.
GEM (Guiding, Empowering and Mentoring) is a program developed to assist Northwest Arkansas’ newcomers navigate the
social and educational systems in the United States as well as to find opportunities for self-development and self-sufficiency. It
guides new residents with information about education and employment opportunities, community services, and job seeking,
and interviewing skills. GEM is helping new residents to develop their potential and offers moral support through mentors.
Estudiantes Hispanos por la Salud es un programa de liderazgo para ayudar a los jóvenes a desarrollar su capacidad de
tomar buenas decisiones y analizar las consecuencias de sus actos. Los jóvenes aprenden a trazarse metas y a enfocarse en
completar sus planes y educación. Esto ayuda a reducir la alta incidencia de embarazos entre los adolescentes hispanos, que
es una de las causas principales de que los jóvenes no completen su educación preparatoria. El programa provee entrenamiento e información para que los jóvenes aprendan a trazarse y alcanzar metas para un mejor futuro.
Hispanic Students for Wellness is a leadership program to promote healthy lifestyles among youth through training and information. Youth learn decision-making skills that help them analyze the consequences of their behavior. When an adolescent
learns to set and focus on his/her goals, he/she is more likely to complete high school. Pregnancies among Hispanic adolescents are one of the main reasons that many youth drop out of high school. The program helps teens make good choices for a
better future.

A la fecha, el Programa de Becas de HWOA ha otorgado 76 becas para que los estudiantes hispanos puedan solventar los
costos de colegiaturas, libros y otros gastos relacionados con su educación. Estas becas son para estudiantes de origen hispano residentes de Arkansas. Pueden ser usadas en escuelas de entrenamiento técnico, colegios o universidades. La meta de
HWOA es aumentar el número de estudiantes hispanos que ingresen a los colegios y universidades.
HWOA Scholarship program has awarded 76 scholarships since 2000 to assist Hispanic students in the community with their
college expenses. The HWOA Scholarships are for Arkansas students of Hispanic heritage and can be used in any college or
university across the nation. HWOA’s goal is to increase college enrollment for Hispanic students.

Festival del Cinco de Mayo en el Centro Jones para Familias es un evento gratuito para el publico con elementos
educativos, culturales y de entretenimiento. Artistas locales comparten sus talentos con la diversa comunidad en un
ambiente familiar donde todos disfrutan el sabor y las tradiciones de Latinoamérica.
The Cinco de Mayo Festival at the Jones Center for Families is a free event that combines education, culture, and
entertainment. Local artists share their talents with the diverse community of Northwest Arkansas in a family environment where everybody can enjoy the tastes and traditions of Latin America.
Conferencia Anual de HWOA en la Universidad de Arkansas, Fayetteville, busca incrementar la reexaminación y
promover el entendimiento de los asuntos de los Hispanos en Arkansas. En la conferencia se presentan programas,
resultados de investigaciones y se discuten asuntos que afectan a la comunidad. El evento atrae a personas que
ejercen alguna influencia en la comunidad tales como legisladores y directores de programas quienes desarrollan y/o
implementan leyes y programas para promover un mejor entendimiento de la comunidad hispana.
The HWOA Annual Conference at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, seeks to promote an understanding of
Hispanic issues in Arkansas. It highlights programs, presents research findings, and discusses issues affecting the
community, reflecting recent demographic changes in Arkansas. The target audiences are key individuals who develop and implement policies and programs in order to promote a better understanding of the Hispanic community.

Membership is open to anyone interested in community issues—especially those affecting the Hispanic community—and wishing to help promote the HWOA mission. Men and women are welcome to join. It is not necessary to speak Spanish or to be of

HISTORIA BREVE DE SHILOH Y SPRINGDALE
Según los arqueólogos, ha habido gente viviendo en esta área por
alrededor de 12,000 años. La abundancia de recursos naturales y la belleza
de la región atrajeron los primeros pobladores blancos a principios de 1800.
Aunque no había nativos americanos viviendo aquí, el área fue usada frecuentemente por los Indios Osage para cacería.
Para 1840, un pequeño grupo se había establecido alrededor de
una cabaña que servía de iglesia conocida como Shiloh Iglesia Bautista
Primitiva, dando al pueblo el primer nombre de Shiloh. Con el tiempo, el

A BRIEF HISTORY OF SHILOH AND SPRINGDALE
According to archaeologists, people have inhabited this area for about 12,000 years. The abundance of natural resources and the beauty of the region attracted the first white settlers in the early 1800s. Although there were no Native Americans living here, the area was frequently used by the Osage Indians as hunting grounds.
In the 1840s, a small settlement was established around a log church known as the Shiloh Primitive Baptist Church,
giving the town its original name of Shiloh. The area soon became famous for fruit production, and the community was eventually big enough to need a post office. When residents applied to the post master, they discovered that Arkansas already had a
town named Shiloh. Due to the abundant springs in the area, “Springs in the Dale” was suggested and later shortened to
Springdale. The town was officially incorporated in 1878.
By 1881, railroads connected local farmers with distant markets, and Springdale became a busy hub for produce to
be sold, bought, canned, and shipped to markets around the country. By the 1900s, farmers had started experimenting with
poultry growing, which soon led to serious investments and innovations. At the same time, area fruit crops were infested by
various blights, making poultry production even more attractive. By the end of World War II, poultry was taking over as local
farmers literally invented and continually redefined every aspect of the new industry.
The booming poultry industry attracted more people to the area with jobs available in processing plants, feed mills,
and hatchery operations. Springdale-based Tyson Foods soon became the largest producer of protein food products worldwide. The local trucking industry also prospered as more feed and supplies were delivered and poultry products were shipped
out. Tourism increased as people discovered the area’s natural beauty. The university in nearby Fayetteville attracted scholars
and researchers. Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton also moved his main office to Bentonville, providing thousands of jobs with
what is today the world’s largest retailer.
Today, Springdale is a big part of the prosperous economic powerhouse that is Northwest Arkansas. The challenge
for the future involves balancing rapid growth with preserving the natural resources and beauty that first drew people here.
