School Office: (805) 648-6836 Weekly Reflection Reflexión Semanal Abba Abba Today’s readings and prayers direct us to the love of our heavenly Father. Saint Paul’s letter to the Galatians reminds us that “through faith [we] are all children of God in Christ Jesus.” We, “who were baptized into Christ, have clothed [ourselves] with Christ.” This recognition of God as our Father, our Abba, encourages us to draw closer to him. The Responsorial Psalm enumerates the longing we have to rest in his presence. The psalmist describes how “[his] soul thirsts like the earth, parched, lifeless and without water.” We realize that we experience this same longing. Yet, the Father makes our journey to him possible through Jesus’ sacrifice which is referenced in the Old Testament reading from Zechariah. The Father had promised that on the day of Jesus’ death that he would “open a fountain to purify [us] from sin.” This gift of salvation, Jesus’ sacrifice, removes any hesitancy in approaching the Father. He beckons to us as “[we] lift up our hands and call upon his name.” When we cry “Abba,” he answers us, never depriving us of [his] loving mercy. This action is familiar to us because we see it in the love our earthly fathers shower upon us. They are blessed in their roles as fathers with the graces needed to cherish, support, and sustain their families. Today as we celebrate Father’s Day, we offer prayers of thanksgiving for our loving fathers. We ask our heavenly Father to continue to shower our fathers with abundant graces as they selflessly work to provide for their families. Acknowledging the confidence we experience because of this paternal love, we proclaim, Lord, “you are [our] help, and in the shadow of your wings [we] shout for joy” (Responsorial Psalm). Religious Education Parish News Our Lady of the Assumption School Open to Serve Means Caring for One Another Our Lady of the Assumption School students, faculty and staff are enjoying summer vacation. Uniform Sale will be held on Wednesday, August 3 from 3 - 6 PM in Mulcahy Center. The first day of school will be Thursday, August 18 for all grades. See everyone at Sunday mass and Friendship Sunday throughout the summer! The purpose of a community of faith is to advance the spiritual dimension of our human experience.by living the Gospel of Jesus Christ to its fullest potential. The mission statement of Our Lady of the Assumption Church states our belief that as a parish community of disciples we follow Jesus Christ by our commitment to “create, nurture, and maintain a community of love through worship, reconciliation, healing, formation, education and service”. Throughout this Year of Mercy, it has been our intent to put into action the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy in many ways. For example, it is a great joy as a parish to send ministers to the sick and homebound, knowing that the gift of the Eucharist and the human touch of our ministers makes an important connection with all they meet. This is a vibrant and active community which is made possible because so many desire to serve. Living our Christian call to care for one another is a great commitment and a great joy. Therefore, we want and need more people to use their gifts, given by the Spirit, to serve the community. Recruiting, training, and sustaining all our ministries demands great effort from all our pastoral leaders. The pastoral leaders in our parish need creative, nurturing, and loving collaborators in order to sustain their roles as a community of happy, healthy, and holy ministers. As parish priests, deacons, and lay ministers, we are committed to this because we know that we can only be effective if we are closely connected to the Lord, to one another, and the people we serve. It is for this reason that Deacon Don Huntley has been asked to assume a part-time position as a Pastoral Associate. In this role as Pastoral Associate, he will participate in the pastoral care of the parish community by his ministry as a deacon and by supporting the work of the other members of the parish pastoral team. As a PA, he will have opportunities to visit the sick, provide pastoral counseling, and perform other pastoral duties appropriate for a deacon. In addition, as a professional educator, he brings unique perspective to support the spiritual and religious formation of our catechists, adult leaders, adult learners, our youth, and children in our religious formation program and parish school. Deacon Don, with his wife Diana, will continue to shepherd the community of those seeking the Sacraments through the Rites of Christian Initiation (RCIA) as they done over the years. It is my hope and desire to continue the great tradition of spiritual and pastoral outreach that Our Lady of the Assumption Parish has sustained throughout the years. As we continue to feel the effects of a declining number of priests available to serve in our churches, it is more important that we build up a well-trained and effective community of deacons and lay pastoral ministers who will continue to sustain and nurture the faith-life of our people,. We are so blessed by those who are generous with their time, talents, and treasure to bring the Good News of Jesus Christ to all we meet. May the Lord’s blessings continue to encourage and bless all our efforts to build up the Body of Christ at OLA. We need your gift of service because what you offer important and needed by others. Protect kids from bullying while playing online The pace of online gaming is only growing. There is a small but real chance that victimization could occur when kids play and interact with others on phones, tablets, laptops, desktops and gaming consoles. A helpful way to teach children about handling problems is to encourage them to report issues when they arise. Internet service providers and gaming networks have systems set up to field complaints of abuse and then investigate them (in conjunction with law enforcement, when necessary). For more tips on how to help protect young people from vulnerabilities while playing online please email [email protected] or call (213) 637-7227 to receive a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Preventing Cyberbullying in Online Gaming, Part 2.” Adult Ministries Adult Faith Formation This year we will offer BOTH an evening and a morning format: six successive Tuesday evening from 7:00-8:45 pm beginning June 28, & 6 successive Wednesday mornings from 10:15 a.m. to noon beginning June 29.
