Standards for Mathematical Practice
The Standards for Mathematical Practice
describe how students are able to apply and
extend mathematics principles. The Elementary
Math Team will continue to highlight a different
mathematical practice and provide suggestions
for parents to promote these behaviors at home.

Ask your child which tools could be used to
help them solve a problem and why.

Math Concepts: Skip
Counting and
Multiplication
This book provides a strong argument as to why it
is more efficient to count objects by multiples of
2, 3, 4, 5, and 10 etc.

Have a designated place with
mathematical tools readily accessible.
Examples include: paper and pencil, graph
paper, calculator, ruler, protractor,
counters, and number lines.

Choose the appropriate technological tools to
solve problems.
Encourage your child to use the etools that
can be accessed when your child logs onto

After reading the story, revisit each illustration
and talk with your child about different ways to
count the objects.

Book of the Month is:
Math Curse
By: David Schwartz
Math Concept: Problem
Solving
This book does a great job
showing how math is not only important, but also
the significant role that math plays in our
everyday lives. The book includes real life
problems involving telling time, dividing food into
equal portions and more.
After reading the story, work together with your
child to create a problem along with the
answer that could be added to the book.
 Encourage your child to be the author/
illustrator to create a page in the book based
on the problem you created together.


y porqué.
Tenga un lugar específico para guardar las
herramientas matemáticas. Algunos ejemplos
incluyen: papel y lápiz, papel de gráfica,
calculadora, regla, protractor, contadores y
líneas numéricas.
 Escojer las herramientas tecnológicas apropiadas
para resolver problemas.

Este libro provee un argumento sólido en cuanto a
porqué es más eficiente contar objetos en multiples
de 2, 3, 4, 5 y 10 etc.
 Depués que lean el cuento, revisen cada
ilustración y hablen acerca de las diferentes
maneras en las que pueden contar los objetos.

Resolviendo Problemas
Este libro nos demuestra
grandemente como la
matemática no es tan solo importante, pero como la
misma tiene un papel muy significativo en nuestras
vidas cotidianas. El libro incluye problemas de la vida
diaria tales como el leer el reloj, la division de comida
en porciones iguales y mucho más.
 Después que lean el cuento juntos, trabaje con su
hijo para crear un problema y la respuesta que pueda
ser añadida al libro.
 Anime a su hijo a ser el autor/ilustrador para crear
una página en el libro basada en el problema que
ustedes crearon juntos.

Learn a sensible approach for families to improve eating habits and
physical activity at home to develop a healthy lifestyle and students’
successful academic careers.
Positive Parenting: An interactive session to learn strategies to establish
family expectations and reinforce preferred positive behaviors.
Hands-On Equations: Learn about a unique visual and kinesthetic
approach to algebra which supports basic algebraic thinking through
play with manipulatives for children as young as grade 3.
Families are ConnectED with Treasures Reading at Home: Discover how
to use ConnectED, an online Treasures Reading Program resource, to
reinforce what your children are learning in the classroom.
Let’s Read Together! Pick up some new, exciting ways to encourage and
enhance your children’s reading skills, regardless of their age.
