Between seasons they change. I am not referring to wheat or willow trees,
but to the characters and plots of episodic TV shows. Pick your favorite.
Note how the last episode of the TV season leaves you hanging for a long
time wondering how this or that situation will resolve itself. That is, unless
it was the final episode. So we said goodbye to popular shows like “The Sopranos”, “The Wire” and more recently to “Downton Abbey.” All hits with
audiences.
Today’s gospel is really an extra series of “small episodes” added on to all
that went before in the life of Jesus and that of the early Church. But unlike a
TV series, we are not left hanging. Written last, John’s gospel itself is a
spiritual reflection on the story told by the three earlier gospels. We have an
incident here that strongly proves Jesus is truly alive: He cooks a seaside
breakfast for His apostles!
The captivating part of the story is what follows the meal: the dialogue between Jesus and Peter. It balances out the bitterness of Peter’s triple denial
with three declarations of love in answer to Jesus’ questions.

Entre estaciones ellos cambian. No me refiero a los árboles de trigo o de
sauce, sino a los personajes y las tramas de las series de televisión. Elija su
favorito. Se da cuenta cómo el último episodio de la temporada televisiva lo
deja colgando durante mucho tiempo preguntándose cómo esta o aquella situación se resolverá. Es decir, a menos que fuera el último episodio. Así que
nos despedimos de espectáculos populares como "The Sopranos", "The Wire" y más recientemente a Downton Abbey". Todos exitosos con audiencia.
El evangelio de hoy es realmente una serie adicional de "pequeños episodios" añadido a todo lo anterior en la vida de Jesús y la de la Iglesia primitiva. Pero a diferencia de una serie de televisión, no nos deja colgando. Escrito en lo último, el Evangelio de Juan en sí es una reflexión espiritual sobre la
historia contada por los tres primeros Evangelistas. Tenemos aquí un incidente que demuestra firmemente que Jesús está realmente vivo: Él prepara
un desayuno junto al mar para sus apóstoles!

That question of Jesus–”Do you love Me?”–echoes down the
centuries to become one for us to answer also. No one of us
can flee from it any more than St. Peter could. The Lord has
the inherent right to ask it of each of us more times than
three. Why? Because every sin we commit at its root is a
denial of love for Christ. The sin may be slight or serious,
“lower” or “upper case” if you prefer, but it still is a denial. By it we declare that this, that, or the other thing matters more to us than God’s will. That is more than an error in
judgment. It is like saying “I don’t know the man!” as Peter
did that first Holy Thursday night. So do not wonder why we
pray our “Lord, have mercy” at the start of every Mass.
During this Jubilee Year of Mercy, the whole concept of
God’s mercy is a timely topic for our reflection. And appreciation. None of us take delight in being sinners, but we can
do so as forgiven sinners. There is a world of difference
between the two. God’s mercy is the reason.
So many people in the world are walking around every day
shouldering guilt. Even if that guilt is only imaginary, it still
fosters a kind of paralysis in their mindset. The relief is no
further away than the nearest confessional. There we meet, in
the unworthy person of the priest, the living Jesus with His
sacred scarred hands ready to embrace us once we say we’re
sorry.
At the start of this Jubilee Year of Mercy last December, I
recall seeing a photo of a reconciliation Room in some unnamed church with the door open. The caption read: “The
one holy door most of us will open.” How true! Before this
year is out, will you open the one at your church?

Esa pregunta de Jesús- "¿Me amas?" - Se hace eco a través de los
siglos hasta convertirse en una de contestar para nosotros también.
Ninguno de nosotros puede huir de ella más de lo que San Pedro
pudo. El Señor tiene el derecho intrínseco de preguntar más de tres
veces a cada uno de nosotros. ¿Por qué? Debido a que cada pecado
que cometemos en su raíz es una negación del amor por Cristo. El
pecado puede ser leve o grave, "inferior" o "mayúsculo", si lo prefiere, pero aún así es una negación. Por lo que declaramos que
esto, aquello o lo otro es más importante para nosotros que la voluntad de Dios. Eso es más que un error de juicio. Es como decir
"No conozco a ese hombre!", Como lo hizo Pedro la noche del
primer Jueves Santo. Así que no se pregunte por qué oramos nuestro "Señor, ten piedad" al comienzo de cada Misa.
Durante este año jubilar de la Misericordia, todo el concepto de la
misericordia de Dios es un tema oportuno para nuestra reflexión y
apreciación. Ninguno de nosotros se deleita en ser pecadores, pero
podemos hacerlo como pecadores perdonados. Hay un mundo de
diferencia entre los dos. La misericordia de Dios es la razón.
Muchas personas en el mundo están caminando todos los días con
el peso de la culpa. Aun si esa culpa sólo es imaginaria, todavía
fomenta un tipo de parálisis en su forma de pensar. El descanso no
está más lejos que del confesionario más cercano. Allí nos encontramos, en la persona indigna del sacerdote, el Jesús vivo con sus
manos llenas de sagradas cicatrices listas para abrazarnos una vez
que decimos, perdón.
Al inicio de este año jubilar de la Misericordia en Diciembre pasado, recuerdo haber visto en alguna iglesia no identificada, una foto
de un confesionario con la puerta abierta. La leyenda decía: "La
única puerta santa que la mayoría de nosotros abriremos." ¡Qué tan
cierto! Antes de que acabe el año, ¿abrirá usted la que está en su
iglesia?
