Vacation Bible School 17 August 2014 Junior Counselors Needed-Grade 7 and up! Please contact Our Holy Redeemer Religious Education Office for more details-at (516) 546-1057 HOW MUCH MONEY SHOULD I GIVE TO MY PARISH? (WITH HELP FROM SAINT PAUL) “Remember how generous the Lord Jesus was: He was rich, but He became poor for your sake, to make you rich out of His poverty . . . As long as the readiness is there, a man is acceptable with whatever he can afford; never mind what is beyond his means. This does not mean that to give relief to others you ought to make things difficult for yourselves: it is a question of balancing what happens to be your surplus now against their present need, and one day they may have something to spare that will supply your own need. That is how we strike a balance, as scripture says: The man who gathered much had none too much, the man who gathered little did not go short.” (II Corinthians viii: 9, 12-15) During the latter part of the last century, Our Holy Redeemer became a tithing parish, and as such, many parishioners began offering the Biblical Tithe of Ten Percent to the Church. IN THE TABLE TO THE RIGHT YOU WILL DISCOVER HOW SOME OF THEM DO IT! ROBIN WILLIAMS CONSIDERED: “ON THE SCREEN” AND “OFF THE SCREEN” The death of Robin Williams and the subsequent look at his life both “on the screen” and “off the screen”, provides us with an opportunity to discuss a number of issues. Much (perhaps too much) has already been written about his “off the screen” life and the issues of addiction, divorce, and depression. And while people in public life can expect such “coverage” by an audience that craves the latest gossip, their fellow man should not be covering it or craving it for that matter. Consider the life of Robin Williams “on the screen”, and you will see that there is plenty we can (and should) talk about! Consider his role in Mork and Mindy and a discussion could emerge about the possibility of “life on Mars”; an issue Pope Francis himself discussed in a homily on 12 May 2014 when talking about ostiaries (doorkeepers) he said, “Just as if, for example, tomorrow an expedition of Martians came … green, with long noses and big ears, just like children draw them … and one were to say, “I want to be Baptized”. What would happen?” Consider his role in Mrs. Doubtfire and a discussion about “cross-dressing and transgender” could emerge; an issue that Pope Benedict XVI addressed on Friday, 21 December 2012 when he said, “These words lay the foundation for what is put forward today under the term “gender” as a new philosophy of sexuality. According to this philosophy, sex is no longer a given element of nature that man has to accept and personally make sense of: it is a social role that we choose for ourselves, while in the past it was chosen for us by society. The profound falsehood of this theory and of the anthropological revolution contained within it is obvious.” Consider his role in Good Morning Vietnam and a healthy discussion about “war” could take place; an issue Pope Saint John Paul II spoke about when on 13 January 2003 he said: “War is not always inevitable. It is always a defeat for humanity.” Consider his role in The Birdcage and a lively discussion about homosexuality and same sex unions would certainly be appropriate; especially in light of paragraphs 2357-2359 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church which state: “Homosexual persons are called to chastity. By the virtues of self-mastery that teach them inner freedom, at times by the support of disinterested friendship, by prayer and Sacramental grace, they can and should gradually and resolutely approach Christian perfection.” (CCC #2359) Consider his role in Dead Poets Society and you will arrive at the issue which on 11 August 2014 surfaced all of the others: – suicide. Consider that an estimated one person in the world commits suicide every forty seconds, and you will see why it is the one issue that needs to be addressed. Consider paragraphs 2280 – 2283 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church and you will (re)learn that everyone is responsible for his life before God Who has given it to him and that we are stewards, not owners, of the life God has entrusted to us. It is not ours to dispose of. Suicide is contrary to the just love of self, it offends love of neighbour, it is contrary to love for the living God, and it is contrary to the moral law. Stop there and you might despair of the Eternal Salvation of Robin Williams, but continue reading and you will discover that “We should not despair of the Eternal Salvation of persons who have taken their own lives. By ways known to Him alone, God can provide the opportunity for salutary repentance. The Church prays for persons who have taken their own lives.” Eternal Rest grant unto him O Lord, and let Perpetual Light shine upon him. May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in Peace. Amen. FAITH AND MARRIAGE MARRIAGES AT OUR HOLY REDEEMER Marriages should be arranged with the Church at least six months prior to your desired date of Marriage. Bishop Walsh came home to Our Holy Redeemer in 2010, and for nearly four years thereafter showed all of us, Priests, Deacons, Religious, Seminarians, and Lay-faithful the way to “rejoice in hope”! If you would like to offer him wishes for a blessed Birthday and/or thank him for his service to the Church, you may write to him at Our Lady of Consolation Nursing and Rehabilitative Care Center 111 Beach Drive West Islip, New York 11795 where he is currently showing Staff and residents that same way! A word from you would help him as well to rejoice in hope! NOW A WORD FROM OUR SAINTS BY: POPE SAINT JOHN PAUL II ENCYCLICAL LETTER VERITATIS SPLENDOR ADDRESSED BY THE SUPREME PONTIFF POPE JOHN PAUL II TO ALL THE BISHOPS OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH REGARDING CERTAIN FUNDAMENTAL QUESTIONS OF THE CHURCH'S MORAL TEACHING (Continued from the 10 August Sunday Bulletin) 11. The statement that "There is only one who is good" thus brings us back to the "first tablet" of the commandments, which calls us to acknowledge God as the one Lord of all and to worship Him alone for His infinite holiness (cf. Ex 20:211). The good is belonging to God, obeying Him, walking humbly with Him in doing justice and in loving kindness (cf.Mic 6:8). Acknowledging the Lord as God is the very core, the heart of the Law, from which the particular precepts flow and towards which they are ordered. In the morality of the commandments the fact that the people of Israel belongs to the Lord is made evident, because God alone is the One Who is good. Such is the witness of Sacred Scripture, imbued in every one of its pages with a lively perception of God's absolute holiness: "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts" (Is 6:3). But if God alone is the Good, no human effort, not even the most rigorous observance of the commandments, succeeds in "fulfilling" the Law, that is, acknowledging the Lord as God and rendering Him the worship due to Him alone (cf. Mt 4:10). This "fulfilment" can come only from a gift of God: the offer of a share in the divine Goodness revealed and communicated in Jesus, the One Whom the rich young man addresses with the words "Good Teacher" (Mk 10:17; Lk 18:18). What the young man now perhaps only dimly perceives will in the end be fully revealed by Jesus Himself in the invitation: "Come, follow Me" (Mt 19:21). "If you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments" (Mt 19:17). 12. Only God can answer the question about the good, because He is the Good. But God has already given an answer to this question: He did so by creating man and ordering him with wisdom and love to his final end, through the law which is inscribed in his heart (cf. Rom 2:15), the "natural law". The latter "is nothing other than the light of understanding infused in us by God, whereby we understand what must be done and what must be avoided. God gave this light and this law to man at creation". He also did so in the history of Israel, particularly in the "ten words", the commandments of Sinai, whereby He brought into existence the people of the Covenant (cf. Ex 24) and called them to be His "own possession among all peoples", "a holy nation" (Ex 19:5-6), which would radiate His holiness to all peoples (cf. Wis 18:4; Ez 20:41). The gift of the Decalogue was a promise and sign of the New Covenant, in which the law would be written in a new and definitive way upon the human heart (cf. Jer 31:31-34), replacing the law of sin which had disfigured that heart (cf. Jer 17:1). In those days, "a new heart" would be given, for in it would dwell "a new spirit", the Spirit of God (cf. Ez 36:24-28). Consequently, after making the important clarification: "There is only One Who is good", Jesus tells the young man: "If you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments" (Mt 19:17). In this way, a close connection is made between eternal life and obedience to God's commandments: God's commandments show man the path of life and they lead to it. From the very lips of Jesus, the new Moses, man is once again given the commandments of the Decalogue. Jesus Himself definitively confirms them and proposes them to us as the way and condition of salvation. The commandments are linked to a promise. In the Old Covenant the object of the promise was the possession of a land where the people would be able to live in freedom and in accordance with righteousness (cf. Dt 6:20-25). In the New Covenant the object of the promise is the "Kingdom of Heaven", as Jesus declares at the beginning of the "Sermon on the Mount"–a sermon which contains the fullest and most complete formulation of the New Law (cf. Mt 5-7), clearly linked to the Decalogue entrusted by God to Moses on Mount Sinai. This same reality of the Kingdom is referred to in the expression "eternal life", which is a participation in the very life of God. It is attained in its perfection only after death, but in faith it is even now a light of truth, a source of meaning for life, an inchoate share in the full following of Christ. Indeed, Jesus says to His disciples after speaking to the rich young man: "Everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for My name's sake, will receive a hundredfold and inherit eternal life" (Mt 19:29). (To be continued . . .) NOW A WORD FROM OUR SAINTS BY: POPE SAINT JOHN XXIII AD PETRI CATHEDRAM ENCYCLICAL OF POPE JOHN XXIII ON TRUTH, UNITY AND PEACE, IN A SPIRIT OF CHARITY 29 June 1959 (The full text of Ad Petri Cathedram can be found at http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/john_xxiii/encyclicals/documents) (Continued from the 10 August Sunday Bulletin) III 59. Now we shall discuss a unity which is of particular concern to Us and is closely connected to the pastoral mission which God has entrusted to Us: the unity of the Church. One Fold and One Shepherd 60. Everyone realizes, of course, that God our Redeemer founded this society which was to endure to the end of time, for as Christ said, "Behold, I am with you all days, even unto the consummation of the world." For this intention He addressed ardent prayers to His Father: "That all may be one, even as thou, Father, in Me and I in Thee; that they also may be one in Us." Surely this prayer was heard and granted because of His reverent submission. This is a comforting hope; it assures us that someday all the sheep who are not of this fold will want to return to it. Then, in the words of God our Saviour, "there shall be one fold and one shepherd." An Ecumenical Council 61. This fond hope compelled Us to make public Our intention to hold an Ecumenical Council. Bishops from every part of the world will gather there to discuss serious religious topics. They will consider, in particular, the growth of the Catholic faith, the restoration of sound morals among the Christian flock, and appropriate adaptation of Church discipline to the needs and conditions of our times. 62. This event will be a wonderful spectacle of truth, unity, and charity. For those who behold it but are not one with this Apostolic See, We hope that it will be a gentle invitation to seek and find that unity for which Jesus Christ prayed so ardently to His Father in heaven. Movements Toward Union 63. We are already aware, to Our great joy, that many of the communities that are separated from the See of Blessed Peter have recently shown some inclination toward the Catholic faith and its teachings. They have manifested a high regard for this Apostolic See and an esteem which grows greater from day to day as devotion to truth overcomes earlier misconceptions. 64. We have taken note that almost all those who are adorned with the name of Christian even though separated from Us and from one another have sought to forge bonds of unity by means of many congresses and by establishing councils. This is evidence that they are moved by an intense desire for unity of some kind. A Mark of Christ's Church 65. When the Divine Redeemer founded His Church, there is no doubt that He made firm unity its cornerstone and one of its essential attributes. Had He not done this—and it is absurd even to make such a suggestion—He would have founded a transient thing, which in time, at least, would destroy itself. For in just this way have nearly all philosophies risen from among the vagaries of human opinion: one after another, they come into being, they evolve, they are forgotten. But this clearly cannot be the history of a divine teaching authority founded by Jesus Christ, "the way, the truth, and the life." 66. But this unity, Venerable Brethren and beloved sons, must be solid, firm and sure, not transient, uncertain, or unstable. Though there is no such unity in other Christian communities, all who look carefully can see that it is present in the Catholic Church. Last Friday we celebrated one of the great feasts of our Church: The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary! The above words, which in today’s Gospel, Jesus says to a Canaanite woman, apply first and foremost to the Blessed Virgin Mary. “O woman, great is your faith!” Don’t you wish these words could also be said of you? I know I would. Most of us, though, feel that our faith is not quite of this caliper. So, what can we do? For one, why not ask Mary, that woman of great faith, to intercede for us? Why not add that intention to one of the decades of your daily Rosary? You do not pray the Rosary daily? Well, why not start doing so? It could lead you to an increase of faith. Wouldn’t it be grand if one day we could hear Jesus say to us “O (add your own name here, great is your faith?” Let us start right now: Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed are thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of our death. Amen. (PART 1 OF 4) Rising water temperatures and changing weather patterns have increased the potential for a hurricane or major storm to strike our area. Indeed, property damage and power outages could be widespread. The key, however, is for residents to be prepared...not scared! To deal with extreme weather conditions, Hempstead Town has developed an Emergency Disaster Preparedness Plan and coastal evacuation routes have been established. These routes are clearly marked with round blue and white signs that provide direction to predestinated evacuation sites. As a valuable tool to assist residents during a natural emergency, the Town of Hempstead's Department of Public Safety has compiled this series of safety information. In the event of an emergency, residents can also visit the Town website, www.TOH.LI. The site's homepage will have a flashing indicator to provide residents with up-to-date information. You can also register to receive emergency phone, email, and text alerts by registering with the Town's SWIFT911 emergency notification system. The Town takes seriously its responsibility of protecting residents. Your safe and orderly evacuation during a hurricane or other emergency situation to a secure, well-provided shelter and your safe return home is the Town’s top priority. And behold, a Canaanite woman of that district came and called out, “Have pity on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is tormented by a demon.” But Jesus did not say a word to answer her. … But the woman came and did Jesus homage, saying, “Lord help me.’ … Then Jesus said to her in reply, “O, woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.” And the woman’s daughter was healed from that hour. Saint Matthew XV: 21-23, 25, 28 Directions: Find the words below from today’s Scripture reading in the puzzle.
