Todos son bienvenidos¡ Holy Family Catholic Church is one of Tucson’s historic landmarks. Built in the Mission style in 1913 in the Hispanic Dunbar Springs neighborhood and close to the University of Arizona, it was consecrated on Jan. 14, 1915 by Msgr. Henry R. Granjon, third Bishop of Tucson (1900-1922). Holy Family Parish is Tucson‟s oldest Catholic parish. Its first pastor Fr. Lucas of St. Joseph O.C.D. and his associate Fr. Eduardo of the Child Jesus O.C.D. were beatified by Pope Benedict XVI on October 28 in 2007, the Feast of Christ the King. Today Holy Family Catholic Church is the home of both Holy Family Parish and St. Gianna Oratory with the Traditional Latin Liturgy. Both communities are under the care of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest. Blessed Lucas and Blessed Eduardo, pray for us! Letter from the Rector Tucson, October 16, 2011 Dear Faithful and Friends of the Institute of Christ the King, The religious education program for this year has started and we are glad to welcome about 60 children and teenagers to the different classes which we offer. Our R.C.I.A. class meets on Thursdays from 5:00-6:00 p.m. in the church rectory. The Marian Catechism program will start in November. I am grateful to all the volunteers who have helped me to prepare our church basement for the religious education classes. In the name of our students and their parents, I would like to say “thank you.” I am likewise grateful to the benefactors from St. Gianna Oratory who made it possible for me to ,purchase the framed posters, the crucifix on the wall, the retablo, and the Mexican and Peruvian decorations on the walls of Our Lady of Guadalupe Hall. As Parish Administrator and Rector it is great for me to see how the faithful of both communities are working together for the future of our church. A special thank you to the Hispanic Charismatic Group which volunteered to retile the stairway into the basement. About eight years ago Holy Family Church suffered a big leak in the roof, which devastated the two sacristies with a flood of mud from the adobe ceiling. This damage has never been really repaired, and in both sacristies you can still see holes, missing plaster, and watermarks from the damage. I am planning on fixing these ceilings in the near future and I will keep you posted on the developments. On Saturday October 29 I would invite you to help with a larger-scale church cleaning in preparation for the Feast of Christ the King, the Feast of All Saints, and in preparation for All Souls Day. Please sign up on the sheets provided in the back of the church. Our San Martin de Porres Fiesta will be held on November 5 and 6, 2011 and I invite you to participate in this two-day celebration where the faithful of both Holy Family Parish and St. Gianna Oratory come together in Christ for good fellowship, a hearty meal, and wholesome entertainment. Please use the flyers in the back of the church to sign up and help us with the preparations. Invite your family and friends to come with you to this fiesta at Tucson‟s oldest Catholic church! You are invited to bring good and useful items for our rummage sale to Holy Family Church starting on Monday, October 23 during office hours. On Saturdays we will be receiving rummage donations from 11:30 a.m.—12:30 p.m. as well as before the Saturday 4:00 p.m. Vigil Mass from 3:00-3:50 p.m. The annual rummage sale is a welcome source of income for our church and will be part of our Fiesta program. Due to further needs to save on our expenses, the Parish Office Hours have been changed on Wednesdays to 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. On Mon. and Fri. the office will be open as usual from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Our new office manager is Mrs. Sylvia Cordova. Mrs. Jackie Case continues to work in our Finance department and Mrs. Irene Garcia continues in her function as parish secretary. I am very grateful for their good and dedicated work! I had the opportunity to attend the National Conference of the Catholic Medical Association (CMA) in Phoenix this past October 6 and 7. I was accompanied by several doctors from our Tucson Catholic Physicians Guild which meets every month at Holy Family Church for the celebration of Holy Mass (Latin) with an English sermon, and followed by a conference given by one of the health care professionals who is a member of our guild. These conferences are also for me an occasion for continued formation in the medical field, so that I can assist our faithful better who are hospitalized, or who reside in an assistedcare facility, or are in hospice care. Being pro-life does not only concern the unborn, but also the suffering and the elderly. This coming Saturday, October 22, Mr. Robert Way from the Way Law Firm in Tucson will give a seminar at Holy Family Church/St. Gianna Oratory about end-of-life decisions, last wills, as well as medical and financial powers-ofattorney. If you are interested in participating at this seminar (see announcement in this bulletin), please contact Mr. Way‟s law office for registration (520-445-6556). The seminar is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. in the church basement. I look forward to participating with many of you, as I hope, at this unique occasion on how to learn more about these so-important topics which concern us all. On Sunday, October 30 we will celebrate the Feast of Christ the King which is the Patronal Feast of the Institute of Christ the King. I invite you to pray the Novena, which is published in this bulletin, in preparation for this Solemnity. On October 30 we will also have a second collection for our International Seminary in Florence, Italy where many American seminarians are preparing for the sacred priesthood. Wishing you a blessed month of October, I am yours sincerely in Christ the King, Canon Richard von Menshengen, Parish Administrator and Rector O Christ Jesus, I acknowledge Thee as King of the universe. All that has been made has been created for Thee. Make full use of Thy rights over me. I renew the promises I made in Baptism when I renounced Satan and all his pomps and works. I promise to live a good Christian life. Especially, I undertake to help, to the extent of my means, to secure the triumph of the rights of God and of Thy Church. Divine Heart of Jesus, I offer Thee my poor efforts so that all hearts may acknowledge Thy sacred Royalty and the Kingdom of Thy peace may be established throughout the entire universe. Amen. HOLY FAMILY CATHOLIC CHURCH & ST. GIANNA ORATORY Dear Faithful of Holy Family Parish and St. Gianna Oratory: I am pleased to announce that Mr. Robert Michael Way, Attorney at Law, of The Way Law Firm, P.C., will present a no-cost exclusive legal education lunch seminar for our parishioners on Saturday, October 22, at 1:30 p.m. in Our Lady of Guadalupe Hall at Holy Family Church. Mr. Way is the current President of the Arizona Chapter of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA). The subjects to be discussed during the presentation include: Should you have an estate plan using a Will, a Living Trust, or both? Planning for incapacity: Who will manage your estate? Who will make a medical decision for you? Can you protect your estate or your children’s estate from creditors and predators? Changes in Arizona law including the Trust Code. Catholic End-of-Life Estate planning. Prudent and Economical Stewardship planning strategy. Why leaving a legacy or charitable gift to your church has both a spiritual and practical benefit. Please sign the response sheet on the credenzas in the back of the church by Wednesday October 19, 2011 to confirm your attendance at this seminar, or contact The Way Law Firm, P.C. at (520)-445-6556 as soon as possible. Each adult parish member will be entitled to a onehour no-cost consultation with Mr. Way (a $300 value) to review your existing estate plan, or to consider the type of planning that might be appropriate for you, assuming that there is no conflict of interest with this firm. I look forward to seeing many of you at this informative and important presentation! Sincerely yours, Canon Richard von Menshengen, Parish Administrator and Rector The Catholic Liturgy and the Roman Rite: A short story by Canon Richard von Menshengen In order to understand the Catholic Liturgy and its historic development it will be not only helpful but even necessary for us to know the exact purpose of the Liturgy: What is the purpose, the reason for it? Liturgy in the sense of an ordered edifice of prayers and rites serves as the sacred setting for the celebration of the Divine Mysteries of our Faith, especially for the celebration of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. The word liturgy is derived from the Greek word leitourgia which means "a public work”. In the Christian context “liturgy” signifies the "public prayer of the Catholic Church", which is "Opus Dei", a "Work of God", a "Work which belongs to God", and which is the center and summit of the life of the Church. Liturgy in this complete sense means the celebration of the Divine Mysteries in the Catholic Church for the greater glorification of the Most Holy Trinity and for man's salvation. God has created and redeemed this world for the external glorification of His Truth and Love, and of His infinite perfect and uncreated Being. In the Liturgy of the Catholic Church this first purpose of Creation and Redemption finds its highest realization and its absolute center and summit. By striving to glorify God in the Catholic Church, and especially in the Liturgy, the second purpose of Creation and Redemption is fulfilled in us: We are re-created in Baptism, we share in God's perfections and are continuously purified and sanctified, and we co-operate with God in our own salvation and in the salvation of others. In order to understand the Catholic Liturgy, it will benefit us also to understand the doctrine of Creation and of Original Sin, as well as the teachings of the Church on the subject of the Re-Creation of fallen mankind through Jesus Christ the Redeemer: God had created Adam and Eve in the state of original justice. Creation in Paradise included for Adam and Eve the divine life of grace. Redemption in the sense of Re-Creation became necessary for man's salvation because Adam and Eve had rebelled against God in Paradise through the evil intervention of Satan. The evil one tempted them in the disguise of a snake to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil so that they would die. Original sin was not just picking a fruit without asking or a fruit which was forbidden. The commandment of God, not to touch or eat from this tree, marked a divine commandment given to our first parents. This commandment constituted the sacrifice that Adam and Eve should bring to God in order to honor Him as their absolute Sovereign, Lord and Master on Whom they should accept to be dependent and under whose authority they should live obediently. This commandment allowed them to adore and thank God by keeping it faithfully. Sacrifice is a duty of man towards God and it is the highest expression of the virtue of religion which is part of the virtue of justice. This was the Liturgy of Paradise in the Garden of Eden, namely, the holy respect for God's commandment not to touch the tree of the knowledge of good and evil or to eat of its fruits, for God's greater glory and for man's eternal salvation. After original sin and the expulsion of our first parents from Paradise, God instituted different forms of bloody and unbloody sacrifices which should be offered to Him for His glorification. These sacrifices had the purpose to profess and to express visibly man's adoration of God, thanksgiving, petition and atonement to God. The sacrifices of Abel, Noah, Abraham, Moses, and then later in the temple of Jerusalem, prefigured the one and perfect sacrifice of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the Human Race, which He would offer in due time, fixed by the Father in Heaven. The Redemption of Christ then brought to mankind reconciliation with God. In the sacrament of Baptism we are re-created through the merits of Christ's Passion and Death on the Cross. We receive the divine life of grace which our first parents had lost for themselves and for their posterity through their rebellion against God. Christ is the new Adam Who repaired and gained in superabundance what the old Adam had destroyed and lost. As the person of Christ is of such supreme importance for the Liturgy and for our Redemption, let us have a closer look at Him and on Who and What He is: Christ is the Second Person of the Most Holy Trinity Who took flesh in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Christ unites thus - within the Divine Person of His Godhead - an uncreated Divine nature and an assumed and created human nature with a true body and a true soul. This union of the divine and the human natures of Christ in the Godhead of the Second Person of the Trinity is called "hypostatical union" (hypostasis means person in Greek). Christ is one person (the Second Person of the Most Holy Trinity) and he has two natures: an uncreated divine nature and a created human nature. As both of Christ‟s natures are united together in the Divine Person of His Godhead, Christ is not two persons but only one person (Christ is the Second Person of the Most Holy Trinity), and because the Second Person of the Most Holy Trinity became man (Mystery of the Incarnation) in Mary‟s womb through the power of the Holy Ghost, Christ has two natures as explained above. On account of this double nature of Christ, both divine and human, Christ is the true Mediator between fallen mankind and God, the bridge between Heaven and earth, the only one Who could redeem us in true justice before God: In His human nature He could merit before God, and on account of His divine nature Christ's merits are of infinite value. Christ was thus able to atone for the infinite offense which the immense ocean of human sins constitute before the Justice of God. God has the right to be honored by mankind as our Creator and as our Redeemer. Our sins offend God and each mortal sin is an infinite offense against God's goodness and holiness. In Christ God became man so that man can find reconciliation with God. We find Christ in the Catholic Church. Christ offers to mankind the fruits of His Redemption through the Catholic Church which He founded on the Rock of Peter. There is no salvation available or possible outside the Catholic Church and there is no liturgy either that pleases God outside that of the Catholic Church. Outside the Catholic Church means to be separated from Jesus because the Catholic Church is the Mystical Body of the Lord. All those who will be saved are saved through the merits of Jesus Christ, and they are saved in the arms of the Catholic Church. Whosoever rejects the Catholic Church and its teachings, sacraments, or government through grave personal culpability, cannot be saved, but condemns himself. It is not possible to separate the Catholic Church from Jesus Christ or to separate Jesus Christ from the Catholic Church. The chief liturgist in the Catholic Church is thus Jesus Christ Himself, our High Priest and Immaculate Victim: The Risen Christ is the center of the Heavenly Liturgy of the Church Triumphant at the Throne of God where He glorifies the Father in the Holy Spirit and hereby leads all the Angels and Saints with the Blessed Virgin Mary in prayer. In this heavenly liturgy Christ shows the Father the glorified marks of His victorious Passion on His hands, His feet and His pierced Heart in order to intercede on our behalf. Jesus is also the chief liturgist on earth in the Kingdom of the Church Militant (The Catholic Church on earth). He acts through the ordained ministers (Pope, Bishops, priests, deacons) to teach, sanctify and to govern His flock and to offer to the Most Holy Trinity infinite glorification through the celebration of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass which is the center and summit of the Catholic Liturgy on earth. Year 33 A.D. Holy Thursday: Jesus Christ celebrates the First Mass in the setting of the Jewish Pasch Meal, which was a sacrificial meal that reminded the Jews of their deliverance under Moses from slavery in Egypt. The deliverance from the slavery in Egypt is a type for the perfect deliverance from sin, from the devil and from death, which Our Lord would accomplish on Good Friday through His sacrificial and redemptive Passion and Death on the cross. The Mass of the Last Supper was celebrated in view of Christ's bloody death on Good Friday. Jesus consecrated His Apostles Bishops during His first Mass and gave them the order to celebrate Mass in memory of Him: “Hoc facite in meam commemorationem/ Do this in memory of Me.” Until our times the Catholic Church has been celebrating the Most Holy Sacrifice of the Mass in obedience to her divine Master. Who also will confirm you unto the end without crime, in the day of the coming of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Deo Gratias. GOSPEL: Mt. 9: 1-8 † Continuation of the holy Gospel according to St. Matthew Healing of the man sick of the palsy at Capharnaum. The Priests have received power to heal souls, to pardon sinners. At that time, Jesus entering into a boat, passed over the water and came into His own city. And behold they brought Him one sick of the palsy lying in a bed; and Jesus seeing their faith, said to the man sick of the palsy: Be of good heart, son, thy sins are forgiven thee. And behold some of the scribes said within themselves: He blasphemeth. And Jesus seeing their thoughts, said: Why do you think evil in your hearts? whether is easier to say: Thy sins are forgiven thee, or to say: Arise and walk? But that you may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins (then said He to the man sick of the palsy): Arise, take up thy bed, and go into thy house. And he arose, and went into his house. And the multitude seeing it feared and glorified God Who had given such power to men. Laus tibi Christe. OFFERTORY: Ex. 24: 4,5 Moses consecrated an altar to the Lord, offering upon it holocausts, and sacrificing victims: he made an evening sacrifice to the Lord God for an odor of sweetness, in the sight of the children of Israel.
