Mark Wagner When someone wins the lottery, or wins an election or becomes a king, suddenly that person usually gets a lot of new friends. A lot of people who never came around before suddenly want to hang out with that rich and powerful person, hoping to get some advantage for themselves. People seek out the rich and the powerful. It is advantageous to be friends with those who can invite you to fancy dinners, and can make you part of the fashionable crowd who enjoy fine clothes, health, wealth and freedom. It is not advantageous to be with those who are hungry, thirsty, strangers, naked, ill or in prison. Today we celebrate the great Solemnity of Jesus Christ, the King of the Universe. But ironically, if you want to be near Him, He says you must first associate with those who are hungry, thirsty, foreigners, naked, ill or in prison. If we seek to be with this king, we must seek those who are least, because He says “Whatever you do to the least of my brothers, you do unto me.” (Cf. Mt. 25:31- 46) Therefore if you want to feast, you must first find someone who is hungry. If you want to drink well, go look for someone who is parched. If you want to be welcomed, search for an outsider. If you admire the beautiful, fashionable, healthy people, go first and look into the face of someone who is unwashed and unhealthy. If you prefer freedom and privilege, you should visit someone in jail. And He says you will be visiting HIM there! That’s where you’ll find this king. Our king will gladly usher you into His royal court. He will be happy to include you in His inner circle of friends. He wants you to enjoy his banquet. But He detests those who only want these things and do not really want HIM. That is why He hides behind “the distressing disguise of the poor.” (Bl. Teresa of Calcutta). What a wonderful, mysterious king we have! What a marvelous kingdom it will be! Long live Christ the King! Religious Education There is still some self-love or egotism “At first it hurts our eyes, but gradually we get used to it” Part III of an Essay by Fr. Mark Wagner In the Bible we find that the words "fire" and "flames" are used many times, but the majority of the time it is talking about the flames of God. Sometimes these words are used to describe Hell or Purgatory, but usually the words "fire" and "flames" are used to describe God himself! (Cf. Gen. 15:17; Ex.2:2; Is. 33: 1116; Is. 66:15-16; Jer. 5:14; Jer.15:14; Ps. 66:10; Ps.68:2; Mk. 9:42-49; Lk. 12:49; 1 Cor. 3: 10-15; Heb. 12:29) This fact can be helpful in trying to describe the afterlife. When we go to meet God, it will be something like being faced with a very bright light such as the sun. The scriptures say that God is light (1John 1:5), and that he is like the sun (Matthew 5:45; Rev. 1:16). When you think about it, God probably created the sun to be a perfect symbol of himself. Like God, the sun gives warmth, light and life. Also, it is interesting that you cannot look at the sun, and in the Bible it says that no one can see the face of God and live (Exodus 33:20). But God is love. God is like a bright sun of burning love. Therefore there are three possibilities when a person dies and goes to meet God face-to -face. First, there are those who die with hearts full of burning love for God and neighbor. These saints fly straight into the heart of God without delay. Secondly, there are those who die without even a spark of love in their hearts. They only have self-love, or lust, or selfish affection only for those people who make them feel good. But none of these are real love, which is charity. Their hearts are small, dried-out and shriveled, and so they cannot tolerate the flames of God's love. They are completely unlike God and so they can never enter his presence. They have preferred darkness to the light (John 3:19). The flames of God's love are repulsive to them, and cause them pain. God doesn't exactly "send" people to Hell. It is not that God rejects them or wants to cause them pain. God can't help the way he is, and he is saddened that some people make themselves unfit for His presence. God is like a gentle giant who unfortunately causes fear and pain just by the way He is, even though He does not wish to. The pain is caused simply because of the way God is, and because of the way some people have made themselves. Finally, there are those who die with some love in their hearts. They have a small flame of love in their hearts but there is still too much self-love or egotism. They want to go toward God but the flames of God's love are much stronger, much different. God is "completely other" and for them He is a fearful, awesome God to look at (cf. Hebrews 10:31). The Bible tells us that even an angel is hard to look at. An angel is totally different from anything known on Earth (like a light that is not light!) Whenever an angel appears in the Bible his first words are always "Do not be afraid." (An exception to this is when Gabriel appeared to Mary!) God is much holier than an angel. God is “Holy, Holy Holy!” Approaching God is not an easy thing for those who are unclean (Isaiah 6:17). Perhaps the gradual process of approaching God and adjusting to His presence can be compared to what happens when we go from darkness into sunlight. At first it hurts our eyes, but gradually we get used to it. That painful process of "adjusting" is what Catholics call purgatory. St. Paul says that in the end we will all be tested as if by fire and that all that is not authentic will be burned away: “the person will be saved, but only as through fire.” (1Corinthians 3: 11-15). They suffer pain because they cannot endure the purity of the flames of God’s love. The pain of separation and privation is unlike any pain on earth. But still they are filled with hope and joy because they know that they are guaranteed to eventually enter heaven. St. Catherine of Genoa, said “It seems to me there is no joy comparable to that of the pure souls in Purgatory, except the joy of heavenly beatitude.” At the last judgment we will all be judged according to the size of our hearts, or rather by the warmth of our hearts. It is not so much that God "judges" us, but rather that we judge ourselves, simply by the way we are. The souls in purgatory are “burning with a desire to be with God” but they are not yet ready to “shine like the sun in the kingdom Father" (Matthew 13:43). of their Respect Life “The responsibility to defend human life in all its stages falls upon all Catholic citizens. It falls, with particular weight, upon Catholic politicians”. Save the Date: Saturday, January 24: West Coast Walk for Life! Most Rev. Among these gifts are the ordained ministries. Through the sacrament of Holy Orders, bishops, priests and deacons are called to guide and protect Christ’s flock, above all though the celebration of the sacraments which give us new life in Christ. The Church is thus both hierarchical and maternal: her ordained ministries are at the service of her spiritual motherhood. This is especially clear in the case of bishops, who are called to lead the Christian community as living signs of the Lord’s presence in our midst. Like the Apostles whose successors they are, the Bishops form one college in communion with the Pope. This collegiality is seen not only in special assemblies like the recent Synod but also in the daily communion of Bishops throughout the world. Let us ask the Lord to draw us nearer to himself and to one another through the ministry of our bishops, priests and deacons, in the unity of “our Holy Mother the Hierarchical Church”.
