FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Christ the King School Peggy Warner, Principal • 404-233-0383 • www.christking.org Cullum Owings Scholarship At the Peacemakers Mass on January 21st, the Cullum Owings Scholarship was presented to Bill Rubright by Cullum’s younger brother Pierce. Cullum was a student at CKS from Kindergarten through sixth grade. In 2002, his brilliant life was cut short in a tragic accident during his senior year of college, but his spirit remains alive at CKS. A scholarship was established by dear friends of the Owings family, and many of Cullum and Pierce’s friends from CKS contribute to the fund annually. Each year this scholarship is given to a sixth grade student who fully embodies Cullum’s spirit. They are wellrounded and display a balance of academic, athletic and social interests. They are compassionate and show kindness to all and they display natural leadership inside and outside of the classroom. Because this scholarship is given to a student who makes the school community all the better for their presence, it was fitting that the scholarship was awarded during the Peacemakers Mass. Congratulations Bill! CKS Students Awarded Peacemaker Each year during Peace and Justice Week, Christ the King School recognizes students from each homeroom who have been outstanding role models for initiating just solutions in the classrooms and on the playground. These students are also being recognized for being respectful towards other students and teachers, as well as being honest, thoughtful, and loyal. These students also display acts of caring, generosity and kindness. These students follow the virtues taught by CKS and Dr. Martin Luther King. Like Dr. King, we are the Lord’s messengers of peace and hope to the world, so that all God’s children can be respected and accepted. May the goodness that we encounter in our life together, help us to be a blessing of peace and hope to all those we meet each day. St. Francis de Sales 5 CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE KING WWW.CATHEDRALOFCHRISTTHEKING.ORG Archbishop Gregory Visits with Students of the Parish School of Religion On Sunday, January 23, Archbishop Gregory visited with over 500 of our Sunday morning Religious Education students. Serving as “Master Catechist” for the day, the Archbishop met the children in two group sessions in the Hyland Center. The opening session, attended by students in the 5 year classes through third grade, covered topics including the duties of an archbishop and his Episcopal vestments – the liturgical vestments worn by a bishop. The Archbishop showed the students examples of a crozier (the bishop’s staff), a miter, and other vestments. He also answered questions by the students. In the second session, students from grades 4 through 8 listened as the Archbishop described his experiences at the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops meeting this past November. He explained what the organization does, how it works, and several issues addressed by the bishops. As with the earlier session, students were invited to ask questions of the Archbishop. Archbishop Gregory has joined the PSR students as their special catechist annually for the last few years. “We were very excited to have Archbishop Gregory join us again this year in our “classroom”. It was a special blessing for the children and catechists to learn from him, pray with him, and just get to know him a little better,” said Anne Boshinski. 6 FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FEBRUARY 6, 2011 Pastoral Care Ministry Dottie O’Connor • 404-233-2145 x440 • [email protected] Transportation Ministry Drivers are needed to assist parishioners with their transportation needs. This, in fact, is the best way to accomplish the “New Evangelization,” the reannouncement of the Gospel in places where, though it was once accepted, it has been eclipsed by secularism. When that happens, as Pope Benedict has said, we lose a proper understanding of the meaning of the most basic human experiences, like birth and death. That is why it is so hard for some to perceive that abortion is always wrong. We can convince them through many arguments. But even more powerful, as Paul declares in the second reading, is “the convincing power of the Spirit.” That power convinces people when they see the Spirit’s effects in our own lives. We become the light of the world, as Jesus indicated. Regarding the pro-life issues, we are called to let people see that in our own lives, we not only choose life, but we sacrifice our own convenience, plans, and resources that others may live. Not only do we – as individuals and as a community – accept the gift of new life when God gives it, but we eradicate injustice from our midst. (Priests for Life) For more information on the Respect Life Ministry, please contact [email protected]. The generous donations provided the funds to improve the quality of the decorations in all three spaces where Mass was celebrated - the Cathedral, Kenny Hall, and the Hyland Center. Approximately 7,100 people attended our 13 Christmas Eve and Christmas Day Masses. New enhancements to the 2010 Christmas decorations included: purchasing a Holy Family nativity for Kenny Hall, a new base for the Cathedral nativity, new tree lights for the Cathedral Christmas trees, enhanced outdoor nativity display, and additional exterior lighting to illuminate the wreaths on the Cathedral doors facing Peachtree Road. The funds also allow us to continue using fresh greenery throughout the Cathedral, rather than artificial greenery. In addition, we would like to thank HighGrove Partners for donating the manpower to help carry and install the two large Cathedral Christmas trees and the two large trees in the Hyland Center. Without their support, installing the heavy trees would be very difficult.
