We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us that we may be a holy family. Come to the Water 1. O let all who thirst, let them come to the water. A Life Teen author reminds us that we too are sons and daughters of God. Picture ourselves on the banks of the river, as we witness this event. Even though Jesus had no sin that needed to be forgiven, the Life Teen author reminds us that in the book, Jesus of Nazareth, Pope Benedict XVI states that Jesus is baptized because He desires “solidarity with men... he blends into the gray mass of sinners waiting on the banks of the Jordan.” Jesus is with us always! Experience Jesus at Life Teen or Edge. MANIFESTING THE SPIRIT The Christmas season closes this Sunday with the Baptism of the Lord. This feast is a sister to last week’s feast of the Epiphany. Each of them celebrates an “epiphany,” or a manifestation of the Spirit of God in Jesus—first in his birth, and now at his baptism. The divine Spirit is manifested in all of the scriptures for this feast. Psalm 104 highlights the Spirit of God creating and renewing the earth, while the reading from Isaiah describes God restoring Israel. In Luke’s account of the baptism of the Lord the Holy Spirit descends upon Jesus. And the letter to Titus reminds us that the Holy Spirit was “richly poured out” on us also, through the “bath of rebirth” (Titus 3:5, 6). Copyright © J. S. Make straight in the wasteland a highway for our God! Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill shall be made low…Then shall the glory of the Lord be revealed and all people shall see it together. Isaiah 40 Isaiah speaks a prophetic word of encouragement to strengthen the Jews during a time of persecution. The words he used are echoed by John the Baptist as he announces the imminent arrival of the Messiah. And then Jesus arrives at the Jordan river and is seen by all receiving baptism at the hands of a desert preacher. “My food is to do the will of the one who sent Me and to finish His work.”John 4:34 May we follow Jesus as work.” He bows to His Father’s will and brings the promise of salvation to the chosen people. We too are chosen by the rite of our Baptism and our faith in Jesus the Redeemer. Let us claim that right and look to heaven from where our salvation springs. Through our invitation to the Sacred Heart to be the head of our households, may we experience the protection and graces being poured out right now directly from the Father through the Son and by the Holy Spirit. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. As though You have already come, I embrace You and unite myself entirely to You; never permit me to be separated from You.
