Jack Long 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time ©Liturgical Publications Inc "Once when Jesus was praying in solitude, and the disciples were with him..." The first line of today's Gospel presents a strange image. Jesus was both by himself and with others. He was somehow experiencing the solitude of personal prayer, but was also close enough to his followers to engage in conversation with them. Although we don't know exactly what the details were of this situation, it does suggest for us an example of what we might call spiritual "balance." Here we see Jesus taking time to be alone in prayer, but also taking time to engage in spiritual reflection with the other members of his community. He didn't sacrifice one for the other. He found a way to have both. We are called to do the same. Developing the habit of personal prayer is an essential part of our spiritual lives. Like Jesus, we too need to set aside time and space to pray by ourselves, connecting as individuals with our Father in heaven. Whether it be a few quiet moments in the morning, or time to pray at night, this kind of prayer keeps us connected to God. It enables us to give our own answer the poignant question Jesus poses today, "But who do you say that I am?" Personal prayer alone, however, is not enough to fulfill us spiritually. We are also meant to participate in the larger community of believers, joining together with others in communal prayer and reflection. This, of course, happens every time we attend Mass as we gather together at church and join in the liturgy. For some, "sacrificing" our Sunday mornings week after week may seem like too much to ask. But this is one way we can carry out the challenging command of Christ to take up our cross and follow him. The Power of Giving is Now at Your Fingertips St. Stephen’s Church is excited to introduce Give by Kiosk, a modern, convenient way to make offerings and respond to special appeals. It’s faster and more secure than having your checks manually processed and it’s easy to use…if you know how to use an iPad, you can use Give by Kiosk. Simply tap the touch pad screen to choose the fund you want to give to and then enter the amount you want to contribute. Once you swipe your credit or debit card and complete your transaction, you can print or email yourself a receipt on the spot. Even better, print a donation slip that you can later place in the basket during Mass. The kiosk is now located in the Gathering Place. Stop by and give it a try! Eucharistic Adoration Prayer Partners Needed All are welcome to spend time in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. We are in need of additional prayer partners to share an hour on Tuesdays at 6:00 a.m. and noon, Thursdays at 5:00 p.m., Fridays at 4:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., and Saturdays at 6:00 a.m. If you are interested, please contact Joyce at 612-860-3830. 2 Parish Directory Parish Office 763-421-2471 Worship Director, Bernie Leach 763-712-7435 Associate, Amanda Lutes 763-712-7458 Associate/School Liturgy Coordinator, Terri Renner 763-712-7459 Faith Formation Director and Adult Formation, Katie Gebhard 763-712-7439 Early Childhood (Sun. Mr. Ramón Garcia Worship The Revised Roman Missal Since November 2011 On April 30, 2010 the Holy See granted recognitio to the English translation of the third edition of the Roman Missal. The English translation of the Roman Missal included updated translations of existing prayers, including some of the well-known responses and acclamations of the people. The missal was implemented in the United States on November 27, 2011, the First Sunday of Advent. Some information about the changes is reprinted here for your information. Five Dialogues during Mass The dialogues are a continued prayer throughout the celebration of Mass. They ask the Holy Spirit to establish a strong communion among those who are worshipping together. This includes the members of the assembly who communicate with each other. It is also a way for everyone to communicate with their priest, who has been called from among them to lead them in a special way. The dialogue between the priest and the people at the beginning of Mass is the first one. The rest include: before the proclamation of the Gospel, at the beginning of the Eucharistic Prayer, at the Sign of Peace (slightly modified to “The peace of the Lord be with you always) and at the conclusion of Mass. These dialogues are scripturally based since there are many examples of similar greetings in both Testaments of the Bible. Praying the Creed “The creed, or profession of faith, said when the rubrics require, has as its purpose in the celebration of Mass that the assembled congregation may respond and give assent to the word of God heard in the readings and through the homily, and that before beginning to celebrate in the Eucharist the mystery of faith it may call to mind the rule of faith in a formulary approved by the Church.” (#29 – Introduction to the Lectionary for Mass) The Creed serves as a link between the two main parts of every Mass: the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. It expresses our strong belief in the Trinity and in the person of Christ who is present in the proclamation of the Word and in the mystery of the Eucharist, as well as the priest who presides for the liturgy and the assembly gathered to worship together. It is meant to be prayed on Sundays and Solemnities. The New Roman Missal allows both the Nicene Creed and the Apostle’s Creed, recommending the use of the Apostle’s Creed during the season of Lent. As members of the Church profess their faith together during Mass it becomes a prayer. By speaking these words all are praying that they truly believe what the Church proposes for their belief and that they are able to carry out the mission of the Church in the world because of these beliefs. www.ststephenchurch.org/worship/ MASS Intentions Monday, June 20 8:00 a.m. Donna Ward Tuesday, June 21 8:00 a.m. Mary and Ed Kolinski Wednesday, June 22 8:00 a.m. George Ottenstroer Thursday, June 23 8:00 a.m. Kathy Goth Friday, June 24 8:00 a.m. Clara Diethelm Saturday, June 25 8:00 a.m. John and Marguerite Gebhard 5:00 p.m. Thomas Schaenzer Sunday, June 26 8:30 a.m. LeRoy DeMars 10:30 a.m. Vincent Wegscheid 12:30 p.m. (Spanish) Hilda Astudillo 6:00 p.m. Parishioners Presider & Musician Schedule Weekend of June 25/26, 2016 5:00 p.m. Jack Long Psalm 100 Accompanist - Nancy Furch 8:30 a.m. Fr. Kids’ Corner Lk 9:18-24 5 Pastoral Care Is God Calling You to be a part of WHO? (We Help Others)? In the Gospels there are many and various ways in which we are invited to give of ourselves to one another and ultimately to God. Here at St. Stephen’s there are many ways to give of oneself. One of these ways is to offer your gifts as a member of the WHO group which means We Help Others. WHO is a service group of men and women who are committed to helping people within our parish and community by assisting with projects. WHO also assists St. Stephen’s parish by improving the appearance of our church and campus. A small sampling of project ideas would be: light yard work, planting flowers, painting, washing windows, handyman services such as fixing doors, changing locks, fixing faucets and community service. (Once a month they pack food for Feed My Starving Children.) They have a wide skill set and can do many things, but not everything, so after receiving your information they will evaluate the project and then call you with questions or concerns. If you have a project for WHO you can contact them by email or phone. If you are interested in joining WHO to help others, contact them in the same way that you would to ask them to do a project. The email address is [email protected] or call Sister Mary Anne at the parish office (763-712-7441). If you have a project for the group to consider, they need your name, address, phone number, the details of your project and the date by which you would like to have the project completed. WHO meets every Wednesday, year-round, at 8:30 a.m. in the Archbishop Romero Room and works until about noon. Come and meet with them if you would like to get a sense of how the group works. Through faith you are all children of God in Christ Jesus (Gal 3:26). With Sympathy The prayers and sympathy of the parish are offered to the family and friends of Joseph Dehen, Stephen Seman and Edmund “Ed” Silver. 6 www.ststephenchurch.org/service/pastoral_care Please Pray for... Please consider advertising in the bulletin since the revenue from the ads is what will make our bulletin possible and at no cost to the parish. The ads are also tax deductible. Advertisements can be purchased for a business, or a sponsor ad can be purchased supporting the parish with a Last Will and Testament or community service organizations such as emergency pregnancy counseling or Birthright. Please give these ideas some thought. We need and appreciate your help! If you are interested or want more information, you can call Bud at (952) 240-1747 or call him at the parish office at (763) 421-2471 the week of June 20. Our current economic situation is evidence of what happens when people think they can have everything they want. Jesus calls us to set our own personal “wants” aside so that we have the resources to follow Him instead. www.ststephenchurch.org 7 Ministerio Hispano Anuncios en Español Summerfest Ya Está Por Comenzar Ya casi comienza Summerfest.
