I pray that your Labor Day Weekend was meaningful and enriching time spent. This weekend presents us with quite the contrast: the 15th Anniversary of September 11, 2001 falling on a Sunday. While we are bound to remember images that stir up within us difficult emotions, as a People of Faith those emotions must be met with the non-negotiable call of the Lord to reconcile our pasts with forgiveness, and to be peacemakers wherever there is strife. I had a conversation recently with someone who didn’t understand the beautiful story told by the reredos (back wall) of our beautiful worship space; it surprised me that anyone might not clearly see the unfolding story there: the six days of Creation (the last of which already foreshadows Adam and Eve’s expulsion from the garden); the Creator resting on the 7th day; and next to Him is the Redeemer who restores and redeems all of creation through his salvific death on the cross. I bring this up in light of the September 11 anniversary because as Christians, regardless of the harm we felt as patriots of our great country, we are duty-bound to look to Christ as restorer and redeemer of all that is broken and evil in the world. Jesus is not just my (or your) personal Savior; He is Redeemer of the whole world. But without our personal faithful practices of forgiveness and peacemaking as His followers, the effectiveness of His redemption becomes more difficult for the world to see. This is why we as Disciples of Jesus, baptized into his life, death, and resurrection, must be bearers of the Good News; that despite any dark human efforts to the contrary, God is always recreating us anew. Our daily choice is to either be faithful participants in His redeeming activity, or souls hopelessly lost in anger, fear, resentment, and un-forgiveness. I invite you to choose the former; “fake it ‘till you make it” if you must. Consider, then, the efforts you will make in this regard; consider the newest opportunity available to you here at St. Lawrence with the “ARISE in CHRIST” faith sharing groups. See your parish Bulletin, Website and/or Facebook page for more details... ST. It only takes $5,000 to start a fund, and then you can add to it each year. When the fund reaches $25,000, distributions will be made to the parish annually.
