Today’s Gospel story is one of the most famous and beloved in all the New Testament: “The Good Samaritan.” In the end we know that it was not the priest or the Levite who helped the man in the ditch, but a Samaritan, a foreigner, considered an outcast by the people of the mes. Jesus tells this story to challenge his listeners to true mercy. And to the ques on: “Who is my neighbor?” the truth of who they are is revealed in their hearts, and their hearts are revealed in the their response to human suffering. Just this past week, we heard about a young Pales nian who had been in jail for a while for throwing rocks at Israeli police cars. But then, he happened to come across a wrecked car, upside down filled with a desperate Israeli family. They were vic ms of a drive by shoo ng. The driver was killed and his wife and children were seriously wounded. He called the paramedics as well and together they were able to save the remaining passengers. Does this remind you of the Good Samaritan? When someone told this young Pales nian that he shouldn’t have helped those Israelis in that horrible situa on, he simply said that he was “helping those in need, whoever they are. We are all one!” Enough said for all of us! As you know, our Youth and Young Adult Group has been sponsoring “Movie Nights on the Lawn” on Friday evenings. On Fri., July 22 you are invited to enjoy “The Good Dinosaur”. All the movies are family friendly. Your dona ons will help our youth a ending the Steubenville San Diego jamboree the end of this month. Come along and enjoy the evening and support our young people at the same me! Do you have your ckets yet for “Late Nite Catechism?” Be er hurry because you don’t want to miss out on all the fun. I think we need some fun in our lives these days! Tickets are on sale today a er Mass. Don’t keep Sister wai ng! Finally please mark your calendars to bid farewell to Fr. Arturo on Sunday, July 31st. A lovely recep on following the Noon Mass is being planned in St. Francis Hall. We wish Fr. Arturo all the best in his new assignment in Los Angeles! July 10, 2016 - 15th Sunday In Ordinary Time| 3 STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT Today’s Gospel turns our a en on to one of Jesus’ most familiar stories, the parable of the Good Samaritan. It is about living how God intended us to live: to acknowledge God’s divine love and compassion lavished upon us, and to extend that love and compassion upon others without reserva on. We can find a lot of reasons for not stopping to help someone. We can talk ourselves out of being Good Samaritans. Strangers are not our responsibility, or are they? Good stewards understand that God’s mercy is a gi that must be shared, and that doing the right thing, ac ng as Jesus would act toward others, is the only course of ac on for one who lives according to the demands of the Gospel. How might you be a Good Samaritan this week?
