It is our hope that your child’s experience here will be worthwhile, pleasant, and a valuable contribution to his/her future. The years of elementary education are a crucial component in a child’s overall school career. It is during these years that the foundation for the future is built. Through the working partnership of the caring adults in a child’s life, characterized by cooperation, communication, and commitment, these foundational years can and will start a child on a course of life-long learning and success. Largely through your efforts at home and through the warm, empathic, and committed efforts of the enitre Hoffman Staff, we will be able to extend the level of excellence that Hoffman has enjoyed. It is our desire to foster a school environment that stresses personalness, academic achievment, self-discipline, individual dignity, democratic procedures, flexibility, and adaptability to change and the future. Earlier in the week your child brought home a packet of information consisting of my expectations for your child and a listing of the various rules throughout the building. I sincerely appreciate the time that you have taken reading through this important information with your child and returning your signed portion to school. This issue and future issues of the “HOFFMAN HUM” are designed to provide parents with some basic information about the programs, policies, procedures, upcoming events, and classroom happenings at Hoffman School. Please read it carefully. Although efforts have been made to answer questions parents might have, we fully expect that other questions will arise. Please feel welcome to contact me or other school personnel with your questions, concerns, and suggestions. Again, on behalf of the entire staff at Hoffman School, I welcome you to the 2015-2016 school year, and wish you and your children a happy and successful year. Sincerely, Mark Walther, Principal Thought for the Day: “Children may close their ears to advice, but open their eyes to example.” Glenview School District 34 NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release 847-998-5000 New Plan in Place for Emergency Make-up Days Beginning next school year, District 34 will follow a contingency plan that outlines how days will be made-up should an emergency school closing occur. This proactive approach is to provide D34 students and staff with an opportunity to plan in advance for how the days will be accounted for later in the school year. Given that it is unknown how many school closing days could occur, the administration has developed the following response plan. Two Emergency Days Built into Calendar Two emergency days have been built into the calendar on January 15, 2016 and April 4, 2016. If no emergency day has occurred prior to either date, then there will be no school on these dates. However, if an emergency day has occurred prior to either date, then school will be in session. Parents are encouraged to plan accordingly for these days to be student attendance days. If Additional Emergency Days Occur The first step to make-up emergency days is to utilize the two built in emergency days (Jan. 15 and April 4). However, if more than two emergency days occur, or if an emergency day(s) occurs after April 4, the district would forgive up to two student attendance days and add any additional day(s) beyond that to the end of the school year. Seeing as though this is a new approach, the district will provide additional reminders at the beginning of next school year as well as closer to when the winter weather season arrives. However, it is important to note that it is expected that the emergency days built into the calendar be considered days when school is in session. Parents are encouraged to plan accordingly for these days to be student attendance days. ### INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PARENT MEETING All 4th and 5th Grade Parents and their students, who are interested in our beginning band or orchestra program, are invited to Attea Middle School on Monday, August 31 at 7:00pm. Students who do not start instrumental instruction in 4th grade can still join in any grade 5-8. On August 27, 2015, the instrumental music staff will present the instruments to all 4th and 5th grade students. On Monday, August 31, 2015, 7:00pm at Attea, there will be a Beginning Band and Orchestra Parent Night where more detailed information will be available about the instrumental program, enrollment procedures and obtaining an instrument. Over the following 2 weeks, directors will work with individual students to select an appropriate instrument. Instruction is available in flute, oboe, clarinet, alto saxophone, french horn, trumpet, trombone, baritone, percussion, violin, viola, cello and bass. Many families already have an instrument from a family member or friend that their student is interested in playing. Please take that instrument to a local music store over the summer to have it checked out and repaired if necessary. August is a very busy time for music stores, and it will take longer to service your instrument if you wait. Lessons for beginning students will start the week of September 14th, so please make plans accordingly. Playing an instrument can be a big commitment, but it is also very rewarding. Ensemble playing teaches teamwork, cooperation and responsibility, as well as providing an outlet for students’ creativity. There are many other benefits to participation in instrumental music, as well. Benefits of Instrumental Music Marissa Kall Attea, Pleasant Ridge Schools 847-657-2008 [email protected] Scientific American’s (2010) board of editors asserted, “Studies have shown that assiduous instrument training from an early age can help the brain to process sounds better, making it easier to stay focused when absorbing other subjects, from literature to tensor calculus.” Hearing the music, honing the mind. IF YOU ARE HOLDING A BIRTHDAY PARTY FOR YOUR CHILD, PLEASE MAIL YOUR INVITATIONS OR DELIVER THEM TO THE RECIPIENT’S HOME. IF YOU SHOULD HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE CONTACT MR. WALTHER. THANKS SO VERY MUCH FOR YOUR HELP! SINCERELY, MARK WALTHER PRINCIPAL Sign up for District 34’s electronic newsletter by visiting our website at www.glenview34.org and select “subscribe to 34 eNews.” FOOD GUIDELINES FOR DISTRICT 34 Glenview School District is continuing to promote healthy living and lifestyle choices for its students. The Wellness Policy was adopted to educate students about healthy food choices and help reduce childhood obesity. NO FOOD ITEMS AT BIRTHDAY PARTIES District 34 does not allow food or beverages at birthday parties at school. Instead, there are several suggestions below for parents and children who still want to celebrate a birthday without food, including: • Special time/special recognition during class. Examples include the student reading to the class, sharing a personal story with the class or selecting a fun activity from a list provided by the teacher. • Purchase a book for the classroom library. This might include the student’s name in the front of the book indicating it was donated by the student in celebration of a birthday. • Bring in a non-food item/party favor (i.e. - pencils, erasers, stickers). Please, no disruptive items. If you need help deciding, please contact the school for guidance. • Donate an indoor recess game to the classroom. Please know all celebratory activities should be cleared with the classroom teacher in advance but that no food or beverages will be allowed as part of these celebrations. Administrators throughout the District are responsible for implementing this practice. FOOD GUIDELINES FOR NON-BIRTHDAY CLASSROOM CELEBRATIONS Food and beverage can be a part of non-birthday classroom celebrations like Halloween and holiday parties. However, those food and drink items will be chosen from a list of menu options developed by the Food Service Department. These food/drink items can either be purchased through the Food Service Department by ordering 30 days prior to the event on a first-come, first-served limited basis. If the PTAs decide to purchase the food directly, the menu must be followed. This will guarantee that the food/drink provided will be nutritious, balanced and offer choices for everyone. As always, any food brought in for these celebrations must be purchased through the Food Service Department or store bought and in the original packaging. No homemade foods are allowed. If you have questions or comments about this change in practice, you may contact your building principal or the District office at 998-5000. __ Online Information There are several resources in regards to the meals Food Service offers. Nutritional information is available at http://www.glenview34.org/parents/foodServices/ through the links/forms section. The cycle menu nutrient analysis information section provides a detailed break down of the meals served. There are also links to an allergy guide, the districts food (snack) guidelines, classroom/team party food guidelines and student account information. If you have any questions regarding meals or your child’s account please call or email: HO Lead Cook: Joyce Meier, 847-998-5044 [email protected] Kimberly Radzinski, Director of Food Services, 847-486-7711 [email protected] FOOD SERVICE INFO………. IMPORTANT – Parents Please Read: Parents, please make sure to check the balance of your child’s lunch account; we want your child to have access to the meal they want. The lunch ID cards and bus passes are debit cards which means that you are required to keep a positive balance. Students with a negative balance will not be offered a choice of meals; instead, they will be given an alternative bagged meal, consisting of cheese, crackers, a fruit/vegetable and milk. We want your child to be happy! Please check your child’s balance by accessing the district website at www.glenview34.org, click on Food Services then check account balance. If you need your child’s username or password, please call the Food Service office at (847) 486-7702 or email [email protected]. ______________________________________________________________________ District 34 Materials Distribution Guidelines District 34 often receives requests from other organizations to distribute informational materials to students. The Community Relations Department reviews and approves appropriate materials. Please know District 34 is selective in allowing items to be distributed through our communications system. The minimum requirements include that the individual or organization should be based in our community and maintain non-profit status. District 34 is making an effort to be environmentally friendly by launching a new approach to distributing information from non-profit organizations and intergovernmental agencies. Rather than sending flyers via backpack mail and newsletters, we will be posting such information on the District 34 Community Announcements webpage for all to see. This will save paper, District employee’s time and make it convenient for parents to find the information easily. The District will provide parents reminders that the information is on our website. Those wishing to submit information to be posted must do so electronically by e-mailing a PDF of the flyer to [email protected] at least ten days in advance of the desired posting date. We ask that organizations limit postings to one per month. Approved postings will be updated on a weekly basis. Limited Print Materials Upon District approval, a limited number of flyers may be made available in the main office. It will be up to the requesting organization to provide paper copies to each school once approval has been granted. It is not possible for schools to make additional copies or to distribute to individual classrooms/students. These flyers must be delivered to the Administration Building, 1401 Greenwood Road. The meal pattern’s dietary specifications set specific calorie limits to ensure age-appropriate meals for grades K-5, 6-8, and 9-12. Hoffman Hum Newsletter Distribution At Hoffman School we continue to make baby steps to improve our environmental footprint and conserve resources when we can. One way to do this is to reduce the paper copies we make. Production and distribution of the Hoffman Hum electronically is one way to accomplish this goal. Our school newsletter, the Hoffman HUM, is published weekly. Starting next week, we will email the newsletter to you via an email link to the email address we have on record. You can also read the newsletter online as it will be posted to our school website at www.glenview34.org/ho. We will, of course, distribute printed copies of our newsletters to those families who cannot access the website and/or request hard copies. To request a hard copy, please call the school office at 847/998-5040. Thank you for your support of our “green” efforts to save paper.
