Veronica Kuehn Office Manager St. Charles Parish San Diego / Imperial Beach Page Two FROM THE PASTOR FR. JIM BAHASH Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph I'd like to begin this column by first giving thanks to you my family here at St. Charles. At the recent passing of my mother, Mary Jane, the outpouring of your love, support, and prayer was so very moving. My brothers, sisters, and I were quite literally “blown away” by your outstanding acts of kindness and generosity. And so, on their behalf I offer you our profound thanks. I am without doubt the most blest priest in the Diocese of San Diego to have you as my family. Now to Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. Today the Church bids us to reflect on the family life of these three holy ones who profoundly loved each other. We don't hear many details about the early life of Jesus with his parents except for the Presentation of Jesus (today's gospel reading) and the Finding of Jesus in the Temple when he was twelve (see Luke 2:41ff). We can however imagine what the family life was like as the child Jesus grew from a young man to adulthood. Since neither he nor Mary were touched by Original Sin there would be no pettiness or selfishness between them. Both of them would have a clear vision of their friendship with the Father and would know how much they were loved by him. Joseph had the great honors of providing for them, keeping them safe, and sharing in this intimate bond of love between the Son of God, the Father, and Mary. Imagine what the conversations must have been like! Imagine how tenderly they treated one another and how much they enjoyed each other's company! Imagine how interesting the conversations must have been, how powerful the prayers! Even how funny the jokes and riddles must have been coming from such intelligence and innocence. Our charge today is to reflect on their lives together and put that into practice in the lives of our own families. Could I challenge you to put into practice what was done daily in their household? First to fathers and mothers. Teach your children how to pray, to love by your example. Safeguard their innocence by preventing dysfunction, discord, and sin from entering your homes. Spend time together and have dinner together daily if possible, especially The Lord's Supper each and every Sunday. Children, say your prayers every day. Listen to and obey your parents without grumbling. Do something nice for your brothers and sister every day. Our homes can and should be places of refreshment, light, and peace. It's no coincidence that the family, the home, is called “The Domestic Church”. God made it to be the place where he is found every day. Pastoral Letter of Marriage December 28: Marriage: Love and Life In The Divine Plan: God always present “They [married couples] are to foster this gospel faith among themselves and within their children through their teaching and example. Likewise, they live in hope of God‘s kindness, mercy, and generosity. In the midst of the inevitable trials and hardships, they trust that God is graciously watching over them and their family. They trust that the Father‘s love will never abandon them, but that, in union with Jesus, they will always remain in his presence.” To read the document go to http://www.usccb.org/loveandlife/. Ahora a Jesús, María y José.
