Well as of this writing, the new officers for the New Year have been nominated and elected to their prospective offices. I hope all the officers have a great year and continue to make our lodge the best it can be. Special congratulations to our new Exalted Ruler Elect, Kris McKim. May you have a wonderful year and enjoy your new position as much as I did. I also ask that the membership support our new Exalted Ruler and his corps of officers and keep continuing to volunteer to help build our lodge. Just a reminder, Kris will be installed on the 9th of April so let’s have a great showing of members to welcome him. I would also like to thank this year’s corps of officers and committee chairs that helped make my year so special. It has been an honor representing our lodge this last year. A big thank you to all The second meeting in March will be step up for the new officers to perform the ritual. I invite all our members to come to the meeting and support all their hard work in preparing for the ritual contest. Bill Markham is the head coach this year and along with the other coaches, the team is coming along nicely. As this is my last article as your Exalted Ruler I would like to once again thank the membership for giving me the opportunity to represent our lodge, which I happen to believe is the greatest lodge in the district. I didn’t get everything done that I would have liked, but with the economy the way it is, some things had to be put on hold. It was a huge success thanks to the outstanding work of our wonderful chefs, Tom and Terry who fixed a great dinner even with TWO ovens going out with only a small delay in serving time. The kitchen staff is to be recognized for their tireless work. The delay in serving dinner was minimized by Jimmy and Harry serving generous drinks at the bar. The other HEROS of the evening were Mike and Rosie and Dee and Bill, who just took over and did what needed to be done. Marcie Donald Brett Super! Super Bowl Wow! Great game, Great food, Great time had by all. We had probably the biggest crowd ever for a Super bowl. I also think we served the best meal ever, it was a first when people told me we charged too little. I have to say Thank You to a lot of people who worked hard to make it happen. Tom Bizal was working on Saturday to get things going without running into people trying to cook the Emblem Breakfast. Great job Tom. I cannot say enough about Chris (who hates football). Rachelle and the Club for getting it all together. Rachelle was also on the door so people could get checked in. Linda Buckhannon for help with filling squares on the pools and collecting money. These people also served the food along with George Miller, Troy Asher and I. All in all we had a great football season at the Lodge. Our Monday night football drew in some great crowds and the same group of people did all the work the whole season. The Major project benefited from all their efforts, Thanks also to everyone that came out and supported these functions. Harry Hopton PER Monday Night Football and Super bowl Chair Our thanks to the Emblem Club who set up and helped with clean up, especially Barbara, Mary, Bonnie. Also, thanks to Barbara and Mary for registration. We all danced into the night with the soft and vintage sounds of Jim Keener. The officers who attended the dinner appreciated that so many elks and Emblem family members took time from their busy schedules to acknowledge the commitment and service of these public service agencies. It was a great turn-out, and a good time was had by all. This event would not be possible were it not for the support of members of our Elk family. I would like to especially acknowledge Exalted Ruler Bill Faubel and Loyal Knight Gary Platz, who helped prepare the meal; Chuck and Elaine Purcell helped set up and decorate; Mike Dreiling, Ken Bond and Rosie Turner for help in serving; and Marcie Faubel and Elli Platz for help in the kitchen, and of course, Jimmy Ondrasek. What do these all have in common. All impact our Lodges—Sweetheart events are almost always successful; without Past President Washington and Lincoln and the ideals they stood for, we would not know life as it is today; and most importantly for our Lodges, your new Corp of Officers. On their shoulders rest whether some Lodges might sink or swim. This is in your hands. There is not a Lodge in the North Central District that does not have the membership that can produce positive results. You just have to be willing to step forward and PROMOTE ELKS PASSION. It means that you need to not only support your Lodge but you need to stand behind your new Officers. Present new ideas, make positive suggestions. Positive action does not take place in the Lounge. Let’s have less “lip service” and more action. It takes many members to make a Lodge successful, and you are one of those that can make it happen. This past month I accompanied Carmichael Lodge’s Veterans Service Chairman Dale Wiest, a contingency from his Lodge, and NCD Veterans Service Chairman Jim Wash to FOUR PAWS FOR VETS. Dale was presenting a check to them on behalf of his Lodge. For those who are not aware, this program offers fully trained service dogs free of charge for wounded veterans. Service Dogs in this program are trained for mobility, balance and psychiatric responses. Many of our returning wounded troops from recent wars benefit from having a service dog assist them in healing and reintegration into civilian life. Unfortunately, the need is greater than the number of trained dogs available through existing programs. I am sure most of you remember the late Bob Burns Jr. whose service dog Caesar was always with him; the Veteran who has Caesar now actually arrived at the facility while we were there—a very touching moment. The organization is looking for persons to be puppy raisers in their homes, three months, six months or a year. If you would like more information on this, their telephone number is (916) 966-6758. If you aren’t able to take a dog, they are always in need of donations for dogs’ vaccinations, food, service vests, harnesses, and the cost of teaching the veteran to work with his or her service dog. Any amount is helpful. The number of veterans returning from war with Post Traumatic Syndrome is staggering and these dogs are trained to mitigate the effects. FOUR PAWS FOR VETS needs our support. On a cold, damp, windy day this past week, a funeral was held for a local soldier, SPC. Martin Lamar, who was killed in Iraq on his Anniversary, just days before he was to return home to his wife, seven- year-old son, his 3-month old baby girl he never got to see, and two adult daughters. I have never been prouder of my fellow Elks than when we gathered at the funeral home and lined the street waving American Flags as the cortege proceeded to the church. A Bud-Light truck driver stopped to see what was going on, when told, he parked and joined our group. People coming out of a restaurant joined us as did persons from several of the businesses on the street. We passed out flags to them all. When the family car passed by, the window rolled down and a woman mouthed “thank you” to us. As I close my blog for this month, I want to congratulate all of the new officers for stepping forward and wish them great success and encourage all to participate in Ritual, which separates the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks from being just a social organization. THOREAU said GO CONFIDENTLY IN THE DIRECTION OF YOUR DREAMS. LIVE THE LIFE YOU HAVE IMAGINED. I second that!
