l comité del Consejo Hispano, el comité de diversidad
cultural, los empleados de KCC y los negociantes
de la comunidad se están reuniendo en muchas áreas
para asegurar el apoyo de las esperanzas y los sueños de
la generación de estudiantes afectados por el problema de
inmigración. Es importante que nuestro colegio comunitario los
apoye y los escuche. Aunque al DREAM ACT fue aprobado por
la Cámara de Representates, le falto cinco votos en el Senado.
Hay un movimiento masivo en los colegios comunitarios
para abogar por los derechos de estos estudiantes. Esto ha
ayudado dar una extraordinaria conciencia sobre el asunto. La
Asociación Americana de Colegios Comunitarios (AACC)
seguirá abogando por esta legislación (AACC 2010).
Mientras tanto, ¿qué puede hacer KCC y los estudiantes
para darnos ánimo? Esta generación de estudiantes son
líderes ingeniosos, talentosos y ambiciosos. Las dificultades
que enfrentan diariamente los hace vulnerable a la depresión
por varios motivos. Pero el propósito aquí es de señalar las
posibilidades, no los límites, los triunfos, no los fracasos. Si
no se maneja, se usa el bus o se pide ayuda con el transporte,
si no se puede trabajar, se invierte en su educación y se aplica
a becas privadas. Esta generación tiene que tener fuerza, fe y
esperanza que algún día tendrán más acceso, oportunidad y
reconocimiento.
Primero hay que tomar acción. Apliquen inmediatamente
para las becas privadas y si es posible, para ayuda financiera del
gobierno. Busque un consejero, mentor o un experto en carreras
para hablar sobre las posibilidades de su futuro. Involúcrese
cuanto pueda en programas de la comunidad o servicios para
la comunidad. Esto crea una base positiva para agradecer y
servir a la comunidad. Tendrá la oportunidad de conocer a otros
miembros positivos de la comunidad para que se abrán las
puertas de maneras inconcebibles. Esto ayuda también a tener
buenas recomendaciones que ayudan a mejorar su hoja de vida.
Las siguientes actividades, clases y eventos se ha organizado
por individuos y grupos que pertenecen al Consejo Hispano/
Latino y los empleados de KCC para apoyar las necesidades
educacionales de la comunidad de Kankakee.

y Herencia Cultural Hispana
Por la Educación!
El Día de Manualidades, Artesanía y Herencia Cultural
Hispana por la Educación toma lugar en el Mercado de
los Granjeros en el centro de Kankakee en el verano.
Esperamos tener otro año de festejo en agosto. El año
pasado tuvimos cantantes y músicos de música Latina,
baile en plena calle, comida y artesanías Hispanas. Fue
divertido ver a las familias Hispanas y norteamericanas
divertirse tanto. Tuvimos una rifa para accmular fondos
para becas educacionales. Esperamos que sea un proyecto
cada año para unir y compartir arte, música y comidas entre
diferentes culturas.
El Mercado de los Granjeros de Kankakee está en la
esquina de la Avenida Merchant y Schuyler.

Un Programa para Ser Mentor

Tenemos muchos Hispanos que quieren y son capaces de ser
mentores para nuestros estudiantes. Para mejor servir a nuestros
estudiantes, nuestros mentores también necesitan un guía de
cómo y cuándo se debe ser mentor. Nuestro curso ofrecerá
información sobre las diferentes cualidades, calificaciones y
el papel de diferentes mentores. Nuestra meta es de ofrecer
un guía y un proceso para tener un programa práctico para
mentores. Queremos proveer un plan realístico para ayudarle al
estudiante lograr sus metas en cuanto a su carrera profesional.
**Cualquier persona interesada en los siguientes cursos

Las clases de Inglés como Segundo Idioma (ESL) es un

La Sanidad y la Seguridad de la Comida
La Salud y la Comunidad
Este curso se enseñará en Español y enfatiza la protección
de comida a través de un entrenamiento de sanidad. Se
aprenderá sobre el tratamiento apropiado de la comida para los
establecimientos de servicio de comida. Los individuos califican
para un certificado del Departamento de Sanidad Publica de
Illinois si pasan el examen del curso.

10-Horas de OSHA Industria General
Este curso es presentado como parte del programa de OSHA

El curso es apropiado para trabajadores, supervisores,

basada en los estándares de la industria general e incluye:

Food Sanitation and Safety Certification
This Office of Continuing Education and Career Services
course, taught in Spanish, emphasizes food protection through
sanitation training. You will learn proper food care for food
service establishments. Successful completion of the course’s
qualifying examination qualifies individuals for Illinois
Department of Public Health Certification.

Mentoring our mentors program

We have many Hispanic leaders who are able and
willing to serve as mentors for our students. To better serve
the needs of the student, we also need some guidance on how
and when to be a mentor. Our classes will address the qualities,
qualifications and roles of different types of mentors. We aim to
offer guidelines and procedures to have a practical mentoring
program and being able to provide a realistic approach to
mentor students into achieving career path goals.
English as a Second Language courses
The English as a Second Language (ESL) program assists
those whose native language is not English. The program has
proven particularly helpful to persons not native to the United
States. All ESL classes are provided at no cost to the student.
Program orientations are required before enrollment.

Community wellness
On Jan. 22, the New Life Pentecostal Medical Clinic
for the Uninsured will be opening at 183 N. Schuyler Ave.

This is a non-profit clinic for those who do not have insurance
or cannot get insurance due to a pre-existing condition.
OSHA certification course
This course is presented as part of the OSHA Outreach
Program for general industry. Upon successful completion,
students will receive a course completion certificate and a
wallet-sized OSHA completion card.
The course is appropriate for workers, foremen, job
supervisors, inspectors, etc., involved in industry. Modules
are based on general industry safety standards and include:
Introduction to OSHA, Electrical Safety, Lockout/Tagout,
Walking and Working Surfaces, Exit Routes, Emergency
Action and Fire Prevention Plans and Fire Protection, Materials
Handling/Back Injury Prevention, Personal Protective
Equipment, Machine Guarding, Hazard communication or
HAZCOM and Bloodborne Pathogens.
How to Open a Childcare Business
If you are interested in starting your own childcare business,
this workshop, conducted in Spanish, can help you get started.
Representatives from Child Care Resource and Referral will
answer questions to help you prepare your business. If you
would like to attend a workshop in the future, and for more

Hispanic
Arts & Heritage Day
for Education
The 2nd Annual Hispanic Arts & Heritage Day for
Education will be held during the Farmer’s Market in
down­town Kankakee in August.
We hope to have another day of festivity in 2011 with
cultural food, live music, arts and crafts, and dance. Last
year, it was wonderful seeing Hispanic families actively
involved and having fun at the Farmer’s Market. Through
raffle donations, we were able to raise scholarship money.

supporting Hispanics in education, come join us this
