94: Super époque... En trois mots (in three words), Peace, unity and respect!
94: Super época… En tres palabras: ¡Paz, unidad y respeto!
The idea of the calendar this year came from a phrase used in a
2004 campaign that said, “Where were you in 1994?” claiming
publicly something we cannot be denied or removed from our
own right: our origins in time. And this is certainly a differentiator
that each of us has, whether individually or as a company.
Our way of life is defined and constructed by our actions, and has
a starting point. Ours was back in 1994 in Barcelona, something
we have always wanted to keep present in our campaigns and
products. Since then all acts that have shaped our way have led
to the development of multiple stories and the launch of new
products that have led to new projects and dreams. And just like
that, with enthusiasm, we have tried to live ever since.
The elaboration of this calendar you have in your hands has
been a laborious process. The contributors who participated
in it are all known locally, some more well-travelled and more
internationally recognized than others but still sharing common
stories like any other - they have captured one of those moments
they experienced 20 years ago and we have shared their stories
with images and a brief description. To do this they have had to
rummage through the old archives of photographs on paper, you
all know at that time we were in full on transition from analogue to
digital technology, and incidentally remember with nostalgia some
of those moments that were so special .
Many of these pieces or panels were executed in countries that
are not the writer´s home. This highlights again the traveler
character of the graffiti writer . For example Dilk, on his first trip to
Barcelona in 95, or Pure, crossing oceans to end up in Munich in
96-97 and leave his mark . Other images portray that first instant
they came into contact with our original Hardcore in the year of
its release, as is the case of Klor, ProGT or Zosen at the train yards
in a cold winter morning in Manresa, a town on the outskirts of
Barcelona.
And it ‘s been 20 years in the history of Montana Colors . It´s
nothing compared to the existence of the universe, or the land
which we live on , even to the four decades since the first signs of
graffiti appeared on city walls, but they have marked our lives, for
it has been a period in which we have tried to help through our
business many writers develop their creations. Our contribution
over the last 20 years has been creating tools for creativity, which
have indirectly led to the creation of thousands, millions of parallel
stories of experiences with our products.
For all that we are proud and grateful to have completed these 20
years with you, alongside graffiti , never forgetting that “graffiti will
exist without us, but we would not exist without graffiti.”
2014 comes with major launches and innovative ideas. We hope
we will all enjoy it together and for years to come. Sharing ideas,
projects and dreams.

La idea del calendario de este año surgió de una frase que utilizamos en
una campaña del 2004 que decía: “dónde estabas tú en 1994?”, con la
que reclamar de manera pública algo que no se nos puede negar ni quitar
por derecho propio: nuestros orígenes en el tiempo. Y este es, sin duda, un
elemento diferenciador que tenemos cada uno de nosotros, ya seamos
individuos o empresas.
Nuestro camino en la vida se define y construye por nuestros actos, y tiene
un punto de partida. El nuestro fue en el año 1994 en Barcelona, algo
que siempre hemos querido mantener presente en nuestras campañas
y productos. Entre medias, y desde entonces, todos los actos que han
formado nuestro camino han dado pie al desarrollo de múltiples historias y
al lanzamiento de nuevos productos que nos han llevado a nuevos proyectos
e ilusiones. Y precisamente es así, con ilusión, como hemos tratado de vivir
desde entonces.
El desarrollo de este calendario que tienes entre manos ha sido un proceso
laborioso. Los colaboradores que han participado en él son escritores y
artistas de graffiti conocidos localmente, algunos más viajeros, más
reconocidos internacionalmente, pero con historias comunes como cualquier
otro. Se han encargado de capturar uno de esos momentos que vivieron
hace 20 años y nos lo han contado a través de imágenes y una breve
descripción. Para ello han tenido que rebuscar en su archivo de fotografías
en papel (tener en cuenta que en aquella época nos encontrábamos en
plena transición y desarrollo tecnológico de lo analógico a lo digital) y de
paso recordar con cierta nostalgia algunos de aquellos momentos que
fueron tan especiales.
Muchas de estas piezas o paneles fueron realizados en países que no son
los del origen del escritor. Esto resalta de nuevo el carácter viajero del
escritor de graffiti. Como Dilk, en su primer viaje a Barcelona en el 95,
O Pure, atravesando océanos para acabar en Munich en el 96-97 y dejar
su marca. Otras retratan ese primer instante, momento, en el que entraron
en contacto con nuestro Hardcore original en el año de su lanzamiento,
como es el caso de Klor, ProGT o Zosen en las vías de una fría mañana de
invierno en Manresa, localidad a las afueras de Barcelona.
Y es que han pasado 20 años en la historia de Montana Colors. La mitad
de tiempo desde que aparecieron las primeras muestras de graffiti en las
ciudades, dos décadas que han marcado nuestras vidas, un periodo en
el que a través de nuestra actividad hemos tratado de ayudar, en cierta
manera, a muchos escritores a desarrollar creaciones y experiencias que
han dado pie a miles, millones de historias paralelas.
Por todo ello nos sentimos orgullosos y agradecidos por haber completado
estos 20 años junto a vosotros, junto al graffiti, sin olvidar nunca que
“nosotros no existiríamos sin el graffiti, pero el graffiti si existiría sin nosotros”.
El 2014 se presenta con lanzamientos importantes e ideas innovadoras.
Esperamos disfrutarlo junto a vosotros durante muchos años más.
Compartiendo ideas, proyectos e ilusiones.

In 1994, myself, Dream & Del got a job painting the side of an
extermination company in Oakland California. We Incorporated bugs into
all of the pieces to tie it in with the building and spent the day cracking up
and having fun. It seems like life was just a little bit less complicated back

En 1994 yo, Dream & Del conseguimos un trabajo que consistía en pintar
la fachada de una empresa de exterminio de plagas en Oakland, California.
Llenamos las piezas de insectos y los extendimos por todo el mural y nos
pasamos el día partiéndonos de risa. Parece que la vida era un poco menos

A few years ago i asked my friend to give me his photos to look over, and i
found this photo from me. I wanted to pose in front of the train, like New
York subway artist in the 80’s used to do.
I wish i had more posing-photos from me/us from this period of time!
Hace unos cuantos años le pedí a un colega que me dejara echar un vistazo a
sus fotos y encontré esta mía. Mi intención fue posar delante del tren como un
lo solían hacer los artistas de graffiti de los 80 en el metro de NY.
¡Me habría gustado tener más fotos como esta de aquella época de mi vida!

In 1994, there were only a few crews and a small number of graffiti
writers in tokyo, also there were only a few spots we could paint, but this
was where we met other writers and graff information was exchanged.
Normally citizens of tokyo think and realise that graffiti is a kind of art. So
we remember it being really easy to do graffiti in 1994. We are always
hoping that people in Tokyo will acknowledge graffiti and street art as
beautiful things.
En 1994 no había muchas crews y escritores en Tokyo, ni lugares donde poder
pintar, pero fue el momento en el que nos encontrarnos por primera vez e
intercambiamos información e ideas sobre graffiti.
El típico habitante de Tokyo veía en aquel entonces el graffiti como algo “cercano”
a un arte, de hecho nos viene al recuerdo lo sencillo que era hacerlo allá por el
94. No obstante, aún estamos esperando que la gente de Tokyo acepte a día de
hoy el graffiti y street art como algo bonito.

This “Pure” was done in Munich in 1996 with Milk TFP. We had been
listening to a lot of Sly and The Family Stone so we decided to do the
“Everybody Is A Star” thing in the background.
Este “Pure” lo hice en Munich junto a Milk TFP en 1996. En aquella época
estábamos escuchando constantemente a Sly and the Family Stone y por este
motivo decidimos hacernos un “Everybody is a Star” para el fondo.

The first picture is from 1996 in Paris, the second is 1997 in Belgium
Lieges, and the last is 1998 in action with MTN cans… The first two pieces
are done with some MTNs, a first for me… MTN cans with the red stripes
down the side!!!!
La primera pieza es de Paris en 1996, la segunda es en Liege, Bélgica, en el
97, y la última es en acción con latas MTN… Las dos primeras piezas son de la
primera vez que utilicé MTN… ¡las clásicas latas MTN con las rayas rojas en la
parte de abajo!

This is a time before the Internet and low cost travel. A big adventure for
me at the time. Also, making friendships which have lasted to the present
day. It was my first introduction to Montana Colors paints, we were blown
away by it.
Este momento es anterior a la existencia de internet y los vuelos “low cost”.
Fue una gran aventura para mi en aquel momento e hice amistades que aún
conservo a día de hoy. Fue mi primera toma de contacto con Montana Colors,
y recuerdo que quedamos muy impresionados por el resultado.

We were rockin this whole car which was the first Monsters whole car we did where
we wrote “Monsters”… This photo was taken on Nordhavn Station. We loved that
place because after we did the whole car, we could go there with some joints and
wait for the shit to go in rush hour traffic… the funny thing about this mission was
at that time, there really were no fat caps or any graff brand cans out yet, so we
used some paint called “Plasti Kote”, really shit paint if you see whats up today like
MTN94… So before we did this whole car we had to mix the cans ourself and that
shit was a mission. Of course we didn’t put enough blue in, so when we sprayed the
cans become more white than “baby blue” and etc, but when I look at the whole car
today i´m really happy about the result and again. I can still hear some of the lads
from the day we did it, “hey this is shitty paint. I hate it”. Some of the lads didn’t even
wanna finish this whole car because of the cans, but again a mission is a mission and
you learn something new in life everyday.
Esta fue la primera vez que hicimos un wholecar poniendo”Monsters”… La foto se hizo
en la estación de Nordhavn, un sitio al que le tenemos un cariño especial pues siempre
acabábamos allí fumando porros esperando a ver pasar los rulos en hora punta. Lo
realmente divertido de esta acción fue que en aquella época aún no había fatcaps o marcas
de spray especializadas como las de hoy, y teníamos que utilizar una pintura de mierda - si
lo compraras con marcas como la MTN94 de hoy en día - que se llamaba “Plasti Kote”.
Antes de comenzar la misión teníamos que agitar bien los botes, pero resultó complicado
pues, como se puede ver, el tono quedó más blanco que el color “baby blue” que se supone
contenían las latas. En cualquier caso, cuando veo esta foto a día de hoy me siento muy
contento con el resultado. Aún me da la impresión de escuchar los comentarios de algunos
de los presentes aquel día quejándose amargamente de la pintura y de lo mala que era.
Algunos de ellos ni siquiera querían acabar la pieza por culpa de la pintura, pero una misión
es una misión, y la vida cada día siempre te enseña algo nuevo.
In 1994 MOA Crew had already been active for 3 years and as I started in 85, I also
have been writing for 9 years that time, so I guess I´m an oldtimer but we are here
to stay and we will survive.
En 1994 MOA Crew ya llevaba 3 años en activo. Yo empecé a pintar en1985, 9 años
hasta ese momento, por lo que supongo que se me podía considerar un perro viejo en esto,
pero no nos vamos a mover de aquí ¡y siempre sobreviviremos!

This piece was painted in the legendary “Buff” on the end of the formerly
end of the U-line 1, now downgraded to the 3 line.
Summertime, shorts and a shirt with your can bag and a photo camera.
I painted a little bit longer on this train. My friends waited at the exit and
suddenly they said “Run fino”. I looked left and right and couldn´t see
anybody. Then I ducked and saw the legs of the security guards on the
other side of the train. “Time to take a picture” i said to myself. I took
the picture and ran as fast as my legs could run. I was lucky to get out
and pumping full of adrenalin and perspiration. I arrived the safely at the
meeting point where my friends were waiting for me.
Esta pieza la realicé en el mítico “Buff”, al final de la ‘U-line1’, ahora conocida
como la ‘3rd line’.
Verano, bermudas, camiseta, bolsa con botes y cámara de fotos.
Aquí le dediqué algo más de tiempo mientras mis colegas estaban esperando en
la puerta de salida. Entonces de repente me dijeron: “Fino, corre”. Acto seguido
miré a izquierda y derecha pero no conseguí ver a nadie. Entonces me agaché y
vi por debajo del vagón las piernas de los vigilantes de seguridad. “Momento de
hacer la foto”, me dije a mi mismo y, tras hacerla, me puse a correr tan rápido
como mis piernas me lo permitieron. Tuve suerte de lograr salir al exterior y, con
la adrenalina por las nubes e hiperventilando me reuní con mis colegas.

It seems like it was only yesterday that we began using the long awaited
Ral colour range from Montana Colors and in the blink of an eye, 20
years have passed. Today we continue to grow, constantly learning and
always trying to keep it fresh!
Parece que fue ayer cuando empezamos a utilizar la esperada gama Ral de
Montana Colors y sin darnos cuenta ya han pasado 20 años.
Hoy día seguimos creciendo, aprendiendo e intentando mantenerlo fresco!

This is 1996, a visit to the BX, NYC. I went with two friends visiting a good
friend who had a good friend staying over. This is one of my best writers
memories ever. This will never be written over.

Esto fue en 1996, durante una visita al Bronx, NYC. Me fui con dos colegas
a visitar un amigo que en ese momento recibía la visita de otro colega suyo.
Es uno de los mejores recuerdos que tengo en mi vida como writer. Algo que

This photo is from the Scrap Yard in Brooklyn. Smith and I wanted to paint
that day and I suggested that spot because I was fascinated by the Scrap
Yard. The trains were almost fully painted but we were able to find a spot
to squeeze in some panel pieces. I know this was from ‘94 because if you
look up above my piece you can see a “Web” tag and next to it he wrote
‘79 to ‘94.
1994 was a strange year for me. I had just finished school in Washington
DC and was moving into my first apartment in Brooklyn. Being free from
school I was now cutting loose racking a bunch of paint, piecing all day
and drinking beers down on the Lower East Side at night and taking tags
on the way home. I was in my early 20’s with no real responsibilities so all
I cared about was going writing. You could still get away with alot in the
city back then.
Esta foto es del “Scrap yard” en Brooklyn. Aquel día Smith y yo queríamos pintar
y le sugerí este lugar porque me encantaba. Los trenes estaban llenos de piezas
pero encontramos un sitio donde poder hacernos unos paneles. Se que es del
94 porque si miras encima de mi pieza ves un tag que pone “web” y, al lado,
“79 to 94”.
1994 fue un año algo extraño para mi. Acababa de finalizar mis estudios en
Washington DC y me mudé a mi primer piso en Brooklyn. Cuando llegué,
libre de la responsabilidad del estudiante, me puse a robar pintura a saco,
y empecé a pintar todos los días, tomando birras en Lower East Side por la
noche, y echándome unos tags de vuelta de casa. Tenía veintitantos años,
sin responsabilidades, y lo único que me importaba era salir a pintar a saco.
Una época en la que todavía podías mantenerte bastante activo sin tener
demasiados problemas.

In the fall of 1994 myself, Jase, Mask and Fase went to a new set of
walls recently found named “795” for the highway it was under, which
later became known as the “Baltimore Hall of Fame”. The walls were raw
concrete, the weather was just right, and we were all ready to get loose.

Durante el otoño de 1994 Jase, Mask, Fase y yo mismo, fuimos a ver un nuevo
spot llamado “795” por el nombre de la autopista que pasaba justo por debajo.
Años después este mismo sitio acabó conociéndose como el “Baltimore Hall of
Fame”. Las paredes eran de cemento y ese día el clima era perfecto… Todos listo
para ponernos en acción.

KAPI (BARCELONA, SPAIN)
Just a few months after Montana Colors presented their first can at
the Aerosol Art event, in the Poble Espanyol in Barcelona 1994, the
three members of my first graffiti group, ‘Mafia 2’, reunited to paint and
celebrate our eight anniversary. We hadn’t painted together for years
because lots of new generations of writers had appeared on the scene
and each of our paths went its own way, though each of us stayed in the
game somehow.
Apenas un par de semanas después de que Montana Colors presentara su
primer bote en el evento Aerosol Art, en el Poble Espanyol de Barcelona en
1994, los 3 miembros de mi primer grupo de graffiti, “Mafia 2”, nos reunimos
para pintar y celebrar nuestro octavo aniversario. No pintábamos juntos desde
hacía años pues habían aparecido varias generaciones nuevas de escritores y
nuestros caminos se habían separado, aunque eso sí, cada uno a su manera,
todos seguíamos en el juego.
‘Mafia 2’ was probably the first graffiti crew to paint a train in Spain, in
February 1987, but it wasn’t the first crew to paint in the city; there were
already lots of artists doing metros during those years. Still, the group
definitely contained people considered to be pioneers on the scene in
the city that saw Montana Colors be born.
“Mafia 2” fue, probablemente, el primer graffiti crew que pintó un tren en
España en febrero de 1987, pero no fueron los primeros en pintar graffiti en la
ciudad pues ya había un buen puñado de escritores circulando por las líneas de
metro en esos años. Aún así, pertenecen a ese grupo de personas consideradas
“pioneras” de la escena en la ciudad que vio nacer a Montana Colors.
