Page 2 February 21, 2016 Could you do me a favor? My dear Brothers and Sisters: Thank you for your generosity from last weekend’s Our Catholic Appeal. Many of our parishioners made their pledge for this year. When we help our Bishop Noonan to spread the Good News of Salvation helping the ones that are in need, we are returning to one of the basic teachings of Jesus. And indeed we are truly applying His words in our lives. When He said in Matthew 25:35-35: “For I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; 36 I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.’37 “Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? 38 When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You? 39 Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ 40 And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’ Some times we look for something different to do in this season of Lent: something pleasing to God, possibly helping someone or how to incorporate the works of mercy with our brothers an sisters. My friends, I am completley convinced that making a commitment to Our Catholic Appeal is one of the right ways. One that starts in Lent but helps us think of just what is necessary for others during the whole year. It is very interesting how Jesus takes the faces of many: the naked, the sick, prisoners even though they have committed a crime, the thirsty, the stranger… YES! Jesus came to rescue every one especially those that in certain difficulties need to be saved by His love. Anyone that follows His teachings and does His will, will have their just reward. It’s like if Jesus asked us to do him a favor. He is saying, ’help me with this need that I have on earth. Or loan me money to help the needy. Can we say ‘No’ to Jesus when He himself asks us for a favor? We can’t say: Lord I don’t have enough blessings that I can help you spread and bring the Good News of Salvation to others. We have been blessed in so many ways and it is time to say to our Lord: “YES! I am ready Lord, what do you need?” We have been blessed in many ways and it is time to say to our Lord: “YES! I am ready Lord, what do you need?” Happy Lent! Fr. Alfonso FOR YOUR SAFETY PLEASE TRY NOT TO BLOCK THE EMERGENCY SERVICE FIRE LANES IN AND AROUND THE CHURCH. A Simple Hug: There is something wonderful about a simple hug that always warms the heart. It welcomes us back home and makes it easier to part. A hug is a way to share the joy and sad times we go through, or just a way for friends to say they like you just for being you. Hugs are meant for anyone for whom we really care. Not even distance will separate a friendship, this is the meaning of a long embrace full of affection. A hug is an amazing thing—it's just the perfect way to show the love we're feeling but can't find the words to say. It is interesting how a simple hug makes everyone feel good; in any country or language, it’s always understood. Hugs don't need equipment, special batteries or parts. Just open up your arms and it will open up your heart. Even if you are suffering from a broken heart after a loss….a hug can alleviate any pain. Never forget that the person who loves you the most died for you… with open arms: Page 3 February21, 2016 St. Vincent de Paul: Lent is a call not just to “give up something” but more importantly to “give something for the poor.” Wherever you live in the parish, there are poor families within walking distance of your home. In 2016, we are seeking to address three problems areas: 1) Reducing Youth Arrests 2) Increasing Access to Mental Health 3)Increasing Access to primary care. Since our Nehemiah Assembly last year, we have made some serious progress in the area of mental health. $450,000 was approved for Winter Haven Behavioral Health to treat 600 patients in East Polk County!! In our research we have learned the following: (1) An average of 1,000 youth a year are getting arrested for a first time minor offenses that do not need to. (2) Over 300 people were Baker Acted three or more times in 2014. (3) Over 107,000 people in Polk County are uninsured. In order to hear testimonies, learn more about these problems, and how we recommend addressing them come to the PEACE Rally on 2/22/16 at First United Methodist in Lakeland. The PEACE Rally will take place in the sanctuary and will be a very high energy event. Doors open at 6:30 PM. Feliz Cuaresma. Fr.
