It is my hope that you and your family are
enjoying the summer, a time when families can
connect, reset, and spend some quality time
together. This is an opportunity to reflect on
the school year and the educational
experiences/goals you and your family would
like to have for the upcoming school year. At
East Aurora High School, we want to partner with you to accomplish all of
them! It is imperative that we work together to see the fulfillment of your
educational expectations and celebrate the success of all students.
It is with grateful heart, I say thank you for the leadership of our faculty
and staff, the graduating class, community members, rising students, district
administrators and the Board of Education. Thank you for your partnership
in bringing about Tomcat Pride and setting high expectations for all
students. Together we celebrate breaking the record of student graduates of
636 students set in 2015. The Class of 2016 celebrated 662 high school
graduates in May! With summer school currently in session, we know there
will be more students to add to that number and we plan to celebrate with
summer school graduates and their families on July 29th, 2016! That’s not
all. The graduating senior class earned $18,021,986.00 in scholarships
towards continuing their educational careers at the college and university
level! It has been a fantastic academic year and we plan on building upon
the momentum in place. East Aurora High School is dedicated to empower
and partner with all students to break the Cycle of Poverty with a
meaningful high school graduation.
As we continue to grow and partner together, studies have shown and
proven, freshman students who have success translate to a higher
propensity to graduate. Tomcat families, class of 2020, it is of the utmost

Espero que usted y su familia estén disfrutando el verano, es el momento
cuando las familias pueden conectarse, restaurarse y disfrutar juntos tiempo
de calidad. Esta es una oportunidad para reflexionar sobre el año escolar y
las experiencias/metas educativas que a usted y su familia les gustaría lograr
el próximo año escolar. ¡En la Escuela Secundaria del Este de Aurora,

Con el corazón agradecido, quiero reconocer el liderazgo de nuestro
personal docente y asistentes, la clase graduanda, miembros de la
comunidad, educando a estudiantes, administradores del distrito y a la
Junta Educativa. Muchas gracias por su colaboración en representar el
Orgullo Tomcat y establecer altas expectativas para todos los estudiantes.
Juntos celebramos haber superado el récord de 636 estudiantes graduados,
establecido en 2015. ¡La clase de 2015 celebró a 662 graduandos de
secundaria en mayo! ¡Con la sesión actual de escuela de verano, sabemos
que habrá más estudiantes que agregar a ese número y planeamos celebrar
con los graduandos de la clase senior de verano y sus familias el 29 de julio
de 2016! Esto no es todo. La clase senior graduanda recibió $18, 021,
986.00 en becas para la continuación de sus carreras educativas a nivel
colegio o en la universidad. Ha sido un año académico fantástico y
planeamos continuar con el impulso. La Secundaria del Este de Aurora está
dedicada en impulsar y colaborar con todos los estudiantes para romper
con el Ciclo de pobreza, con una graduación de secundaria significativa.
A medida que continuamos desarrollando y colaborando juntos, los
estudios han demostrado y comprobado, que los estudiantes freshman que
tienen éxito se integran a una tendencia más alta para graduarse. ¡Familias
Tomcat, la clase de 2020 es la de mayor importancia y la cual debe
relacionarse a la Escuela Secundaria del Este de Aurora! ¡Le invitamos para
que conozca a sus maestros y miembros del personal; son estupendos!

Club, Activity, Sport or Advisory Group. These are a few ways to fully experience life as a Tomcat!
Excellence is here. It's in our school, in our hallways, in our families, in our staff/faculty, in our
administrators and in every breath of our students. As educators, we will partner with you and your
families for you to bring that to life!
As we enter the 2016 – 2017 school year, it is important that we cultivate positive relationships that
will encourage and enable success – personally, emotionally and academically. School is not just a
place in which we just sit and academically learn, it is a place to break the Cycle of Poverty and
become a positive member of the fabric of our society. We learn how to become part of a
community. To each and every student, you are important. You are needed and you make EAHS a
better place. We are preparing to have an outstanding 2016 – 2017 school year and believe that it

On May 21, East Aurora School District hosted a very successful Feed My Starving Children
Mobile Pack Event. Feed My Starving Children, founded in 1987, is a non-profit organization
committed to feeding hungry children. Volunteers were asked to hand-pack meals specially
formulated for malnourished children that will be sent to partners around the world. These meals
will be used to operate orphanages, schools, clinics, and feeding programs in over 70 countries.

In one day we had 382 volunteers. 159 of them were EAHS students who cumulatively
earned 318 community service hours. We packed a total of 368 boxes which held 79,488
meals. We will help feed 217 kids for an entire year!
A special thank you to all of you who were able to make it to our event, the parent liaisons that
helped coordinate it, and the FMSC staff who ran our event.

As every East Aurora High School (EAHS) parent knows, all students must complete 40 community service
hours in order to graduate. Because some students find it difficult to complete their hours during the academic
year, it might be a good idea to have your student complete the majority of his/her community service hours
during summer vacation.
According to the National Summer Learning Association, many students lose educational knowledge when they
are not involved in some form of educational endeavor during summer vacation. Therefore, motivating your
EAHS student to complete some of his or her community service hours can actually help continue his or her
learning during the summer. Not to mention, expose him or her to future career opportunities!
There are plenty of summer volunteer opportunities for your student. The key to obtaining these opportunities
is for your student to seek these opportunities, and for you, as a parent, to support your student as he or she
seeks and follows-through on these opportunities.
If your student is having trouble seeking out volunteer opportunities within the community, a great place to
start would be places like community centers, food pantries, churches, libraries, and centers with a
concentration on youth programs. A list of local organizations with potential summer volunteer opportunities is
provided below.
As your student completes his or her community service hours, he or she must keep community service hour
sheets for proper documentation of the hours completed to turn into his or her counselor come the start of
school in the fall. Students can obtain community service hour sheets from the EAHS Student Services office
(Room 092) year-round.
Sophomores going into their junior year at EAHS must have 20 community service hours turned in by July
29, 2016 or they will not be promoted to junior year.

Por eso, motivar a su estudiante de la EAHS a que complete unas horas comunitarias le ayudara continuar su
educación durante el verano. También lo mantendrá ocupado y al mismo tiempo le dará oportunidades para
una carrera en el futuro.
Hay muchas oportunidades para que su hijo/a obtenga sus
horas de servicio comunitario. Pero, es importante que usted,
como un padre, soporte a su hijo/a cuando esté buscando
oportunidades y cuando esté tomando las oportunidades.
Si a su estudiante se le hace difícil buscar oportunidades para
obtener sus horas de servicio comunitario los primeros lugares
en que deben buscar oportunidades son lugares como centros
comunitarios, organizaciones que reparten comida para los
necesitados, iglesias, bibliotecas y centros con una
concentración en programas para jóvenes. Una lista de
ejemplos de organizaciones en la comunidad sigue abajo de la
página.
Cuando este completando sus horas de servicio comunitario, su
hijo/a debe estar documentando su progreso usando las
hojas de horas de servicio comunitario para entregarlas a su consejero/a en el otoño cuando empiece el

ANNUAL BACK TO SCHOOL FAIR SET FOR SATURDAY, AUGUST 6, 2016
Communities In Schools of Aurora, IL helps Aurora children return to school with necessary supplies.
Aurora, IL – May 1, 2016- The Communities In Schools and Project Unity’s Back To School Fair brings the
best of Aurora’s resources together in a collaborative effort between the City of Aurora, First Presbyterian Church,
Aurora area schools, public health agencies, non-profit organizations, churches, corporations and hundreds of
volunteers.
Together, we help economically disadvantaged children start off the new school year with many of their school-related
needs met in a “one stop destination.”
Over 3,000 school supply kits and backpacks will be handed out during the fair. Families are also encouraged to take
advantage of the free health care opportunities being offered such as immunizations, physicals, and dental screenings.
In addition to this, many area social service organizations, school districts and governmental agencies will be on site to
promote the programs they offer in Aurora. The fair will be held at the John Harkness Center located at, 60 S. Fourth
Street in Aurora, IL, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The fair is open to qualified Aurora area children. The Aurora Area
Interfaith Food Pantry will provide food pantry vouchers and Word and Worship Church will provide a free clothes
closet for participants. The Aurora Police Department Union will also be on hand to provide hot dogs and drinks for
the families in line. Northern Illinois Food Bank will also provide healthy snacks and water.
To be eligible, participants must bring the following: a picture ID, proof of Aurora address, a current paycheck or
public aid card. To receive health care services, they must also bring their immunization records. Physicals and
immunizations will be provided on-site in the VNA mobile clinic and complementary transportation will be provided
to Aunt Martha’s clinic. Appointments can be scheduled ahead of time. Call VNA at (630) 892-4355 or Aunt
Martha’s at (630) 896-7900 to schedule.

Communities In School de Aurora, IL ayuda a los niños(as) de Aurora a regresar a la escuela con los
útiles escolares necesarios.
Aurora, IL. – 1 de mayo de 2016 – La Feria de regreso a clases de Communities In Schools y Project
Unity, presenta los mejores recursos de Aurora en un esfuerzo colaborativo entre la Ciudad de Aurora,
Primera Iglesia Presbiterana, escuelas del área de Aurora, agencias de salud pública, organizaciones nolucrativas, iglesias, corporaciones y cientos de voluntarios.
Juntos ayudamos a los niños(as) en desventaja económica a empezar el nuevo año escolar con muchas de sus
necesidades relacionadas con la escuela, lo cual se cumple en “una sola parada”.
Durante la feria se entregarán más de 3,000 conjuntos y mochilas de útiles escolares. Se les recomienda a las
familias que aprovechen las oportunidades gratuitas sobre el cuidado de la salud que se ofrecen tales como
vacunaciones, exámenes físicos y evaluaciones dentales. Además contaremos con la presencia de muchas
organizaciones de servicio social en el área, distritos escolares y agencias gubernamentales para promover
los programas que se ofrecen en Aurora. La Feria se llevará a cabo en el Centro John Harkness ubicado en
60 S. Fourth Street en Aurora, IL., de 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. La feria está disponible para los niños(as)
elegibles del área de Aurora. El Centro de Distribución de Alimentos Interfaith del área de Aurora, proveerá
cupones de despensa y la Iglesia Word & Worship proveerá gratuitamente ropa para los participantes. El

East Aurora High School’s schedule pick-up for sophomores,
juniors and seniors will take place on Tuesday, August 16th from
11:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., and on
Wednesday, August 17th from 8:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. in the
Auditorium Lobby, Door 1.
“So You Want to Be a Tomcat” for all incoming freshmen will take
place on Thursday, August 11th from 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. in the
Auditorium. During the event, freshmen students will be able to
go to their lockers, find their classes, etc. to help them get
acclimated to the building.
The above dates and times are for schedule pick-up ONLY. Students must have their
registration packets 100% complete and turned in to the high school prior to receiving their
schedules. Registration packets were mailed to students in the Spring. Packets will still be
accepted if they weren’t submitted by the deadline date.
Families that are new to District 131 should contact the Welcome Center at 1480 Reckinger
Road, Door #2, to register their student(s). The Welcome Center is open Monday – Thursday
from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. and is closed on Fridays. Walk-Ins are welcome from 9:00 a.m. –
3:00 p.m., and by appointment only, from 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Please call (630)299-7302 to
schedule an appointment.

The ESL/Bilingual Division congratulates our bilingual Seniors who are graduated this spring or are
graduating this summer. We are so proud of you! You have overcome so many obstacles in order to walk
across the stage. We applaud your effort, your perseverance and dedication, and all that you have learned.

Student of the Month is Maria Hernandez, a
hard-working and determined student who
recently arrived in the U.S. Also nominated

Virginia Orala. Thanks for being role
models!
Sadly, we say goodbye to Mr. David Escribanos-Ortiz, who will return to his native Spain this summer. Mr.
Ortiz co-taught Chemistry with Ms. Hart, to English Learners and general education students. Division
Chair Lucinda Sanders reports, "Labs in that class are a pleasure to watch. Students comfortably use either
language to achieve the goal of learning Chemistry."
Mr. Ortiz writes this of his experience here at East High:
"At the beginning of the school year, I was totally excited about teaching at EAHS. Many things were different for me as I was
facing a lot of changes in my life: a new culture, different expectations for the students, new coworkers, hard moments…
It´s been a time where I realized how a person´s thoughts can be impacted by such a vivid experience. All my feelings about being
here have converged to three main truths: Kids are kids everywhere, challenges there are very similar to those here, and you can
do a good job when you are surrounded by authentic professionals that unconditionally help you. This is the nature of human
kind, helping each other to make life easier.
Thank you East Aurora for the great opportunity you gave me."

Este año, nuestros destacados estudiantes bilingües son Alondra Roldán y Erick Cano. Ambos estudiantes se
han desarrollado significativamente aquí en la Secundaria del Este y seguramente continuarán aprendiendo y
descubriendo a medida que avancen en sus vidas. ¡Felicidades, a los ganadores de este reconocimiento!
Nuestra estudiante del mes es María Hernández, una estudiante trabajadora y determinada quien
recientemente llegó a Estados Unidos. También se nominó a Brenda Lopez, Jesus Ortega y Virginia Orala.
¡Gracias por ser excelentes ejemplos!
Tristemente, despedimos al Sr. David Escribanos-Ortiz quien este verano regresará a su nativa España. El Sr.
Ortiz enseñó en colaboración con la Srta. Hart el curso de química, a los aprendices del idioma inglés y
estudiantes de educación general. La presidente de la división, Lucinda Sanders reporta: “Es un placer
observar los laboratorios de esa clase. Los estudiantes usan cómodamente cualquier idioma para lograr el
objetivo de aprender química”.
El Sr. Ortiz escribe lo siguiente sobre su experiencia aquí en la
Secundaria del Este:
“Al inicio del año escolar, estaba muy entusiasmado de enseñar en la Escuela
Secundaria del Este de Aurora. Muchas cosas fueron diferentes a medida que
enfrentaba varios cambios en mi vida: una nueva cultura, diferentes expectativas para
los estudiantes, nuevos compañeros de trabajo, momentos difíciles…
Ha sido un momento donde me he dado cuenta cómo los pensamientos de una persona
pueden impactarse de tan vívida experiencia. Todos mis sentimientos sobre estar aquí
se han recopilado en tres hechos principales: los niños(as) son niños(as) donde sea, los
desafíos allá son muy similares a los de aquí y puedes desempeñar un buen trabajo
cuando estás rodeado de profesionales auténticos que te ayudan de manera incondicional. Esta es la naturaleza del ser humano,
ayudarse unos a otros para lograr que la vida sea más fácil.
“Muchas gracias al Este de Aurora por la estupenda oportunidad que me brindó”.

On Friday, April 1st 25 students enrolled in East High’s Human Structure and Function course traveled to Northern Illinois University
with their teachers (Hilary Hawkinson and Alexa Bluemke) to get a glimpse into life as a college science major. With over 150
students enrolled in Human Structure and Function, and only 28 spots available, interested students were chosen based on
academic achievement and future college and career goals.
Students were expected to be familiar with several body systems, all covered throughout the year with Miss Hawkinson and Miss
Bluemke. Two optional review sessions were offered for students to brush up on their knowledge. Once the group arrived at NIU’s
Anderson Hall, where the anatomy lab is housed, students were split into four groups to review and prepare for the afternoon lab
practical. Two groups reviewed using human cadavers, two with models and dissection specimen, rotating through stations every
40-45 minutes. After a break for lunch, students returned to the lab to show their knowledge gained throughout their experience at
both East High and NIU by completing a 50 question lab practical. Practical exams are set up very different from most high school
assessments, with students traveling station-to-station, answering questions on a time limit. It can be one of the toughest
experiences a science student encounters in college. Even so, many of the Tomcats who participated scored very well, and left
that day with a renewed drive towards their future goals and focus on college.

más de 160 estudiantes inscritos en
Estructura y Función Humana y solo 28
espacios disponibles, los estudiantes
interesados fueron elegidos en base a
su aprovechamiento académico y
futuros objetivos universitarios y
profesionales.
La expectativa fue que los estudiantes estuvieran familiarizados con varios sistemas corporales, lo cual todo se cubrió en el
transcurso del año con la Srta. Hawkinson y la Srta. Bluemke. A los estudiantes se les ofreció dos sesiones opcionales de repaso
para refrescar su conocimiento. Una vez que el grupo llegó al campus Anderson Hall de NIU, donde se alberga el laboratorio de
anatomía los estudiantes se dividieron en cuatro grupos para revisar y preparar la tarde de práctica de laboratorio. Dos grupos
repasaron usando cadáveres humanos, dos con modelos y disección de espécimen, con rotación de estación a estación cada 4045 minutos. Después del almuerzo, los estudiantes regresaron al laboratorio para demostrar el conocimiento adquirido a través de
la experiencia tanto en la secundaria como en la universidad, completando una práctica de laboratorio de 50 preguntas. Los
exámenes de práctica son muy diferentes a la mayoría de las evaluaciones de la secundaria, los estudiantes recorren estación por
estación, responden preguntas en tiempo límite. Puede ser una de las experiencias más difíciles que un estudiante de ciencia
puede tener en la universidad. Aunque muchos de los estudiantes Tomcats que participaron tuvieron muy buenos resultados, ese
día partieron con un impulso renovado para continuar sus próximos objetivos y enfocarse en la universidad.

Tri-M finished up strong with many events and fundraising activities during April and May.
Spring is always a bittersweet time for the club; although we are losing 11 seniors this year, we were
happy to add 19 new inductees at our ceremony on April 7. Once again, we decided to induct an
honorary member to Tri-M. This year, the club overwhelmingly voted to have EAHS teacher Gary
Hoyne as our 2016 honorary member. This was the second year we decided to have an honorary
member; last year’s recipient was EAHS teacher Jen Hart.
We also decided to announce our new officers at our induction ceremony. Our past officers were Jerrell
Bacon, choir president; Erik Strand, band president; Jocelyn Unzueta, treasurer; Pepe Martinez,
secretary. Our newly elected officers are Pepe Martinez, band president; Stephanie Viayra, choir
president; Marlena Cannon, treasurer; Samantha Zuniga, secretary; Areli Morales, communications
coordinator. Congratulations are extended to all of our new officers and much appreciation is also
extended to our outgoing officers for all of their hard work this year.
Tri-M once again voted on an outstanding senior who represents the ideals of Tri-M. This student
shows great musicianship and leadership skills, is a good and mentor for younger members and has
played an active role in the club. This year’s recipient is Dartisha Mosely. Dartisha will receive $100
toward the college of her choice. Congratulations!
We presented the outgoing seniors with a club picture and signed cards at our last meeting. Seniors
were given the opportunity to make a speech and club members also were able to talk about
contributions that the seniors made.
Although we are officially done with Tri-M for the year, members are still actively providing community
service by ushering at the upcoming band and choir concerts.
We are looking forward to a great 2016-2017 school year.

Una vez más Tri-M votó por el destacado estudiante senior quien representa los ideales de Tri-M. Este
estudiante demuestra gran espíritu musical y habilidades de liderazgo, es un excelente mentor para los
miembros jóvenes y ha jugado un papel importante en el club. El receptor de este año es

French Honor Society (SHF) had a busy second semester!
We participated in numerous community service activities,
including a few trips to Feed My Starving Children. On May
3rd, we inducted 32 members to our society and said
goodbye to 23 seniors who graduated on May 27th. Newly
