Units: 2 Course material: instructor will provide students with material (worksheets, articles, etc.). Students are required to use a bilingual dictionary of their choice. Recommended reading (not mandatory): Ghosts of Spain: Travels Through a Country's Hidden Past. Giles Tremlett (2006). Course description: Spanish 121 is a 2-unit course of Contemporary Spanish History and Culture: an overview of events leading to 20 th and 21st C. political and social changes in Spanish society. It combines cultural activities inside and outside of the classroom (lectures, field trips, visits to monuments and museums, etc.). It will be taught entirely in Spanish. Attendance and field trips are mandatory. Upon successful completion of this course, students will have a better understanding of Contemporary Spain: how the past shaped the present and how the present deals with its past; cultural diversity and its contradictions; Spain and globalization. Pre-requisites: 4 semesters of Spanish. Written Assignments: 1. Exercises assigned by instructor. Short readings provided by instructor will prompt students to conduct research so they can complete the worksheets and questionnaires assigned for each topic. 2. Short essays (4-5 pages): students will write two short essays analyzing a topic given by instructor.
