My dear parishioners,
After our glorious time in Poland for World Youth Day (WYD),
our parish group flew to Rome for four nights. We had three
full days to sightsee and we were blessed with a beautiful time.
The Lord had been so good to us and continued to shower blessings on us. Our first full day in Rome we had Mass in St. Peter’s
Basilica at the altar of St. John XXIII. We were honored that
Bishop Scharfenberger, Bishop of Albany, joined us for our
Mass. After the Mass, we visited the basilica for a while and
then we took taxis to the catacombs of St. Callistus. We had a
wonderful visit to the catacombs, enjoying them especially
since it was 40 degrees cooler in them than outside. We saw
where the early Christians were buried, some of the earliest
Christian artwork and where Mass was celebrated away from
the Roman authorities. We then walked to the Catacombs of St.
Sebastian, prayed at his tomb and visited the catacombs there.
We stopped for a long lunch and then returned to the city to
visit different churches. We returned to our guesthouse and had
evening free.
The next day we joined with the group from St. Gerard
Majella, Hollis, for Mass at the tomb of St. Peter, in the crypt of
St. Peter’s. Afterwards we visited the basilica again, climb to
the cupola on top (320 steps up and another 320 down) after
taking a short elevator ride to roof. We had magnificent views
of inside the basilica and around Rome. The next part of our
tour was to visit the Vatican Museums. Since our group had a
reservation, we were able to bypass the long line and begin our
tour, seeing the amazing paintings and sculptures. The tour
ended with us seeing the Sistine Chapel where were saw the
breathtaking murals of Michelangelo. After a short lunch, we
had a tour of the Scavi, the excavation underneath St. Peter’s
Basilica which was an old cemetery and where we could see the
remains of St. Peter that are within a box under the main altar.
That night, we had a great dinner in the neighborhood of Trastevere that will not be soon forgotten.
Saturday, our last full day in Rome, we had a private
tour of the city for our group of seven. We saw the Coliseum,
the church of St. Peter in Chains, the Roman Forum, the Victor
Emmanuel II monument and then after lunch, a visit to the major basilicas of St. Paul outside the Wall, St. John Lateran and
St. Mary Major. One of the highlights of this day was to climb
the Scala Santa on our knees. The Scala Santa are believed to
be the stairs, which Christ climbed when he went before Pontius
Pilate. St. Helen, the mother of the emperor Constantine, had
them brought back to Rome for devotional purposes. Every day
people climb the steps on their knees, offering up prayers. It
was a very spiritual moment, especially seeing our young ladies
take their time, deep in prayer. That evening we celebrated
Mass in St. Mary Major with the group from St. Gerard Majella,
where Alexa Dayoan led us in music and our girls supported
her. Our Mass attracted more people, many who were WYD
pilgrims as well. It was a fitting last spiritual act of the day. We
then had our last dinner in Rome, ready to leave the next morning early for the airport. The only regret we had in Rome was
not to stay longer. Thank you for your prayerful support on our
pilgrimage.

Después de un tiempo glorioso en Polonia para el Día Mundial
de la Juventud (WYD), nuestro grupo parroquial viajó hacia
Roma para estar cuatro noches. Tuvimos tres días enteros para
hacer turismo y fuimos bendecidos con un hermoso tiempo. El
Señor ha sido tan bueno con nosotros y continúa enseñándonos
bendiciones. Nuestro primer día en Roma tuvimos Misa en la
Basílica de San Pedro en el altar de San Juan XXIII. Tuvimos el
honor de que el Obispo Scharfenberger, Obispo de Albany, nos
acompañara para nuestra Misa. Después de la Misa, visitamos la
basílica por un momento y después tomamos taxis para las catacumbas de Santo Callistus. Tuvimos una visita hermosa a las
catacumbas, las disfrutamos especialmente porque estaba a 40
grados más fresco que afuera. Vimos donde los primeros trabajos del arte cristiano y donde la Misa se celebraba lejos de las
autoridades Romanas. Después nosotros caminamos hacia las
catacumbas de San Sebastián, oramos en su tumba y visitamos
las catacumbas de ahí. Paramos para almorzar y regresamos a la

Tuvimos vistas magnificas de adentro la basílica y alrededor de
Roma. La siguiente parte de nuestro recorrido fue visitar los
Museos Vaticanos. Como nuestro grupo tenía una reservación,
pudimos evitar las largas filas y comenzar nuestro recorrido de
ver las pinturas y esculturas increíbles. El recorrido termino
cuando vimos la Capilla Sixtina donde vimos muros impresionantes de Michelangelo. Después de un breve almuerzo, tuvimos un recorrido de Scavi, la excavación debajo de la basílica
de San Pedro en la que fue un cementerio viejo y donde pudimos ver los restos de San Pedro que están dentro una caja debajo el altar principal. Esa noche, tuvimos una gran cena en la
vecindad de Trastevere que no será olvidado pronto.
El sábado, fue nuestro último día completo en Roma,
tuvimos un recorrido privado de la ciudad para nuestro grupo de
siete. Vimos el Coliseo, la iglesia de San Pedro en Cadenas, el
Foro Romano, el monumento Víctor Emmanuel II y después de
almorzar, visitamos las basílicas mayores de San Pablo afuera
del Muro, San Juan Letrán, y Santa María Mayor. Lo más destacado de este día fue subir la Scala Santa de rodillas. La Scala
Santa es creído ser las escaleras, en las que Cristo subió cuando
fue ante Poncio Pilato. Santa Elena, la madre del emperador
Constantino, hizo que las trajeran de regreso a Roma por propósito devotos. Todos los días la gente sube las escaleras de rodillas, y ofrecen oraciones. Fue un momento espiritual, especialmente ver a nuestras muchachas tomar su tiempo, profundizado
en oración. Esa noche, celebramos Misa en Santa María Mayor
con el grupo de San Gerardo Majella, donde Alexan Dayoan nos

la siguiente mañana temprana para el aeropuerto. El único arrepentimiento que tuvimos en Roma fue no quedarnos más tiempo. Gracias por su apoyo de oración hacia nuestro peregrinaje.

Friendly Reminders
Organ Repairs
Some of you may have
noticed issues with the organ
over the last few months.
Donald Hausbeck told me that
the organ predates the current
church. The organ was actually installed in the second
church and moved to the
current church when it was
built in 1958. As with anything valuable, time takes its
toll and work needs to be
done. Leather needs to be replaced in the swell of
the organ and other sections. Work began last week
and will continue for the next two weeks. The total
costs for repair of the organ will be $11,000. Not a
bill we needed with the new boiler being installed
right now. We received a donation of $3,000 to help
with the costs of the organ repairs, for which we are
deeply grateful.
New church boiler
The installation of the new boiler continues. We had
one problem Monday morning, when the plumbers
found the boiler room flooded and the flood had entered the lower church. The sewage pump in the
boiler room stopped working and the water from the
rain Sunday overflowed into the room and the lower
church. We will have to replace that pump as well.
The bright side is that everything in the boiler room
will be brand new.
Did you know?
The old country Church of
1888 and the small rectory next
to it were demolished to make
room for an extension to the
school building. Before the
extension was added, classes
were held in the Lower Church
and earlier were conducted in
the Clubhouse: the student
body had exceeded 1,200 children at this time. The extension was dedicated by the 10th
pastor, Father Stephen Schubert on March 5, 1967; the principal at this time was
Sister John Anthony, O.P. With the extra space available for classrooms, two rooms in the older section of
the building were converted into a much needed library;
the library was blessed and dedicated by Bishop
Charles Mulrooney, June 2, 1968. Prior to this dedication, a stone memorial had been erected beside the
school that Msgr. Fox had envisioned. On November
6, 1962 this tribute was dedicated to Msgr. Peter Fox
for his devout interest and sincere love for all the youth
of the Parish. The Parish theme is boldly etched in the
stone: St. Mary’s Youth Ad Jesum per Mariam.
Please be aware that The Sister Mary Conroy Pantry
will reopen on Thursday, September 1st.
Sr. Mary Conroy’s Food Pantry and Outreach is sponsoring a
raffle for JetBlue tickets to anywhere JetBlue flies: almost 100
domestic and international destinations! Two sets of a pair of
tickets (4 in total) will be raffled on Sunday, September 18th.
After the 10am Mass refreshments will be served as a welcome
back to everyone returning from vacations to the Family Mass.
Raffle chances go on sale at the rectory this weekend for $20/
chance. Don’t miss this opportunity.
50TH REUNION FOR THE CLASS OF 1966
The alumni from St. Mary’s class of 1966 are planning a 50th
Reunion on October 29, 2016. Any ‘66 grad who would like to

Reparaciones del órgano
Algunos de ustedes se habrán dado cuenta de los problemas con el órgano los últimos pocos meses. Donald Hausebeck me dijo que el órgano antedata la iglesia de ahora.
El órgano fue instalado en la
segunda iglesia y se movió a la
iglesia actual cuando fue construida en 1958. Como cualquier
cosa valiosa, el tiempo toma su
perdida y se necesita trabajar en
el órgano. Se necesita reparar la
piel de la ola del órgano y otras
secciones. Se comenzó a trabajar en el órgano la semana pasada y continuara por los siguientes dos semanas. El costo total
para las reparaciones del órgano
será de $11,000. No es una factura que necesitamos ahora con
la nueva caldera que se está instalando ahora. Hemos
recibido una donación de $3,000 para ayudarnos con los
costos de la reparación del órgano, y estamos profundamente agradecido por eso.
La nueva caldera de la iglesia
La instalación de la nueva caldera continua. Tuvimos
un problema el lunes por la mañana, cuando los plomeros encontraron el cuarto de la caldera inundada y
había entrado a la iglesia de abajo. La bomba de
aguas residuales en el cuarto de la caldera paro de
funcionar y el agua de la lluvia del domingo se inundó hacia el cuarto y la iglesia de abajo. Tendremos
que remplazar la bomba también. Si miramos del
lado bueno todo en el cuarto de la caldera será nuevecito.
Por favor tengan en cuenta que la Despensa de la
Sor Mary Conroy volvera abrir el 1 de septiembre.
La Despensa de Alimentos de Sor Mary Conroy

La iglesia vieja rural de 1888
y la rectoría pequeña a lado
fueron demolidos para hacer
un cuarto para una extensión
al edificio de la escuela. Antes de que se agregara la extensión, las clases las daban
en la iglesia de abajo y antes
eran conducidas en sede de
un club: el alumnado había
excedido 1,200 niños en
aquel momento. La extensión fue dedicada por el décimo párroco, el Padre
Stephen Schubert el 5 de marzo de 1967; el principal en ese tiempo era la Hermana John Anthony,
O.P. Con el espacio de más disponible para salones, dos cuartos en la sección vieja del edificio
fueron convertidos en una biblioteca bien necesitada; la biblioteca fue bendecida y dedicada por el
Obispo Charles Mulrooney, el 2 de junio de 1968.
Antes de esta dedicación, una piedra de homenaje
fue levantada alado la escuela como el Monseñor
había visualizado. El 6 de noviembre de 1962 este
tributo fue dedicado a Monseñor Peter Fox para su
interés devoto y amor sincero por todos los jóvenes
de la parroquia. El tema parroquial es grabado con
audacia en la piedra: St. Mary’s Youth Ad Jesum
per Mariam.
